Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth carry nine in ten departures
Government airline statistics for the year to June 2026 show Sydney handled 38 per cent of passengers leaving Australia on international flights, Melbourne 27 per cent, Brisbane 16 per cent and Perth 12 per cent; Adelaide, the Gold Coast and Cairns shared most of the remainder. Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport adds a second Sydney gateway: the federal infrastructure department lists its first passenger flights on 25 October 2026, Air New Zealand to Auckland from 26 October and Singapore Airlines to Singapore from 23 November. From another city, weigh a departure from your own airport against a domestic connection into one of the four.
