Experiences worth prioritising in Venice

Our planning choices weigh the experience, who it suits and what you give up. Affiliate sales and availability do not determine this order.

  1. St Mark’s Basilica: a plain entry, extra tickets or a guided visit?

Entry to the Basilica is by named slot in any case. The choice is what surrounds the slot: the interior alone, the interior with the Pala d’Oro and museum, or a guided visit that carries its own slot.

Best for Visitors deciding how much of the interior they want explained

Consider A guided visit fixes the meeting time as well as the slot. A plain entry leaves the pace to you but supplies no interpretation of the mosaics.

  2. Doge’s Palace: the standard route or a guided hidden-rooms tour?

The standard route follows the public rooms. The Secret Itineraries and Doge’s Hidden Treasures tours are guided routes through administrative and private rooms, and each includes the standard entry.

Best for Visitors who want the working rooms of the administration and not only the public route

Consider Because the tour departs at a fixed time, it decides when you reach the palace, so it becomes the anchor of the morning.

  3. One palace entry or the four-museum St Mark’s Square ticket?

The palace entry is already the Museums ticket. It also covers the Museo Correr, the National Archaeological Museum and the Marciana Library rooms, so the choice is time, not admission.

Best for Visitors who can add museums around the square to a palace visit

Consider The extra sites lengthen the visit, so a short stay may leave them unused.

  4. Murano, Burano and Torcello: separate boats or one guided lagoon trip?

Public lines reach each island separately. A lagoon trip is worth choosing only when its route names every island it stops at and the time on each.

Best for Visitors short of days who want the islands without planning line changes

Consider A fixed route sets the time on each island, so the time at Burano and Torcello is the figure to compare between listings.

  5. Grand Canal: a public vaporetto ride or a guided boat tour?

Line 1 is ordinary public transport with a validated ticket, and a guided boat tour adds commentary and a fixed departure.

Best for Visitors who want the Grand Canal explained palace by palace

Consider A tour gives commentary but fixes the time and route, while the vaporetto ride can be repeated with landings of your choice.

Choose the right Venice ticket or tour

Basilica: the slot you can keep

Choose the Basilica option whose time you can keep, and place everything else around it.

Tickets are named, so a change of traveller is a change of ticket.

The trade-off A guided visit adds its own meeting point to the slot.

Doge’s Palace: which ticket carries a departure

Book a guided hidden-rooms route first when you want one, and plan the rest of the morning around its departure.

Each guided route includes the standard entry to the palace and the museums on the same ticket.

The trade-off The extra museums help only if the day has room after the tour.

Lagoon islands: which boat commitment

Take the public boats when the museum hours matter, and a lagoon trip when you want the crossings handled for you.

Public lines run to Murano and Burano separately, and Torcello adds a short crossing.

The trade-off A fixed route cannot flex around fog or tide changes to the timetable, while public lines can be re-planned.

MAKE THE TRIP YOURS

Fit your bookings into a day

Full day: Basilica slot then the palace

A guided palace tour adds a second fixed time, so leave enough of a gap between the two to cross the square.

Afternoon: Cannaregio to Rialto on foot

A guided walk sets the pace and the route, while the self-guided version can stop at any landing.

FAQs about Venice

Is a Doge’s Palace listing the same as the four-museum ticket?

Only if the listing says so. Look for the St Mark’s Square Museums ticket by name, because a listing that names only the palace may not include the other three sites.

Does a Basilica listing include the bell tower?

Only when the listing names it, because the bell tower is a separate ticket. Look for the bell tower in the inclusions, not in the title alone.

What should a lagoon island trip list?

It should list each island it stops at, the time on each and the boat used. A trip that names only Murano is a different product from one that also names Burano and Torcello.

Does a guided walk in Venice include entry to St Mark’s?

Not by default. Entry is a separate named slot, so a walk that says it visits the Basilica should say whether entry is included.

Is a boat tour the same as a vaporetto ticket?

No. A public ticket is valid only on public lines and is validated on boarding, while a listed boat tour has its own ticket and departure.

Do Murano glass trips include the Glass Museum?

A glassmaking demonstration and the museum are different visits. Check whether the listing includes museum entry and how long the museum stop is.
