Tours from Valletta divide between the city and the sea. Walking and harbour tours explain the Knights’ capital and the Three Cities, while boat trips and island days go out to Comino’s Blue Lagoon and to Gozo.

Experiences worth prioritising in Valletta
Our planning choices weigh the experience, who it suits and what you give up. Affiliate sales and availability do not determine this order.
Book a Comino boat trip that fits a Blue Lagoon time slot
Cruises from Malta anchor at the Blue Lagoon, and some add Comino’s sea caves or a stop on Gozo. Anyone going ashore needs a timed pass for one of the three daily slots, so the hours the boat spends there have to sit inside your slot.
Best for A swimming day on the lagoon without the old summer crush
Consider Passes cannot be changed once booked, so fix the boat and date before you take the slot.
Choose a guided Gozo day, by jeep or with Comino added
Guided Gozo days take care of the crossing and the driving, so more of the island fits into one day. Combined Gozo and Comino cruises put the two islands into a single day by sea.
Best for The jeep day for Gozo itself; the combined cruise for a taste of both islands
Consider A combined day gives each island only a few hours ashore, too short for the temples and the citadel together.
Take a guided walk or a street-food walk through Valletta
The city is small enough to walk end to end in a morning, and a guide can explain the Knights’ plan as you go. Street-food walks cover the same streets with tastings of Maltese staples.
Best for A first morning in the capital before visiting sights on your own
Consider Tours that go inside the Co-Cathedral follow its dress rule, so cover your shoulders or take a wrap.
See the Three Cities with a guide, or the Grand Harbour from a cruise
Three Cities tours walk the older harbour towns, and some add a harbour boat crossing. A harbour cruise instead circles the creeks and forts from the water.
Best for The guided tour for the streets and Fort St Angelo; the cruise for the fortifications seen from the sea
Consider A cruise never goes ashore, so Birgu’s lanes and the fort stay out of reach.
Walk Mdina and Rabat with the catacombs included
Guided walks cover Mdina’s lanes and continue into Rabat for St Paul’s Catacombs and the grotto tied to Paul in local tradition. Self-guided Mdina walks are also sold for those who prefer their own pace.
Best for Travellers who want the history below ground as well as the walled town
Consider The catacomb story needs a careful guide, since Heritage Malta treats the link to St Paul as a myth.
Choose the right Malta tour or boat trip
A Blue Lagoon cruise, or a longer Comino and caves trip?
Book the lagoon-only trip for swimming time; choose the caves itinerary to see more of Comino’s coast.
Match the hours the boat spends at the lagoon to one of the three slots.
The trade-off The caves itinerary spends more of the slot at sea, which leaves less time for swimming in the lagoon.
Gozo by jeep, or Gozo and Comino by boat?
Book the jeep day to see Gozo’s temples and citadel; book the cruise for time in the water.
The jeep day we checked includes a private boat to Gozo and back.
The trade-off A jeep day fills the whole day on Gozo, with no time left for Comino.
A history walk, or a food walk in Valletta?
Book the history walk on day one for orientation; book the food walk for an evening.
Valletta is only about 1km long, so either walk stays inside the walls.
The trade-off A group walk sets its own pace and stops, which leaves little time inside any one sight.
Three Cities on foot, or a harbour cruise?
Book the guided tour to walk Birgu and reach Fort St Angelo; book the cruise to see all the fortifications from the water.
Some Three Cities tours include a short boat across the harbour.
The trade-off Check whether a walk includes Fort St Angelo entry before assuming you will go inside.
Mdina with the catacombs, or Mdina alone?
Book the combined walk for the Roman and early Christian underground; book an Mdina walk for the town only.
Rabat is next to Mdina, so the combined walk adds little travel.
The trade-off Part of the combined walk is spent in underground passages, which leaves less time in Mdina itself.

MAKE THE TRIP YOURS
Fit your bookings into a day
Valletta morning, noon gun and harbour afternoon
The battery publishes opening hours for Monday to Saturday only, so check before planning the gun on a Sunday.
A prehistory day: the Hypogeum, then Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra
The Hypogeum slot is fixed and small, so everything else on the day has to bend around it.
A morning slot at the Blue Lagoon
Book the lagoon pass for the same slot as the boat, since the pass cannot be switched later.
A full day on Gozo
Ferry times shape the day, and the Azure Window is no longer there to see at Dwejra.
Mdina at dusk, Rabat before it
Mdina admits almost no cars, so the last stretch is always on foot from the gate.
FAQs about Valletta
Is the Blue Lagoon pass included in Comino boat trips?
Read each listing. The pass is free and anyone stepping ashore needs one; if the operator does not arrange it, book the slot that matches the boat’s time at the lagoon yourself. One booking covers up to four people.
Can I visit the Hypogeum on a tour?
Rarely. Only 10 people are allowed inside at a time, and our search found just a handful of private-driver and multi-day tours that mention it. Check a listing’s inclusions for a named Hypogeum entry before counting on it.
Is one day enough for Gozo?
For Ġgantija, the Cittadella and a drive to the west coast, yes, on a guided day. Adding Comino to the same day leaves each island only a few hours.
When should I schedule tours in summer?
Average highs reach about 32°C in August. Put walking tours and temple visits early in the day, and keep the middle of the day for boats and swimming.
What does a Three Cities tour add over taking the ferry myself?
The Valletta Ferry to Cospicua, with a lift ticket back up, gets you there on your own. A guide adds the story of the 1565 siege, Fort St Angelo and the war damage in streets that carry few signs.
Are Game of Thrones tours worth it?
Only if the series is the point of your trip. Malta’s scenes were filmed mostly for the first season, and the Azure Window used then has collapsed, so Mdina is the main location still standing.
