Tours on Tenerife split between the mountain and the sea. Day and evening trips go up to Teide for the caldera, the cable car, sunsets and stars, while boats leave the south and west coasts for pilot whales, dolphins and the cliffs of Los Gigantes.

Experiences worth prioritising in Tenerife

Our planning choices weigh the experience, who it suits and what you give up. Affiliate sales and availability do not determine this order.

  1. Pick a Teide day by how you want to cross the caldera

Guided Teide days drive through the national park to the Roques de García rock towers, with the cable car as an option on some. Jeep safaris cross the park with a driver, and quad tours stop in the mountain village of Vilaflor and at the Boca Tauce viewpoint.

Best for The guided coach day for the caldera and the cable car; the jeep or quad for the drive itself

Consider The guided day we checked lists the cable car ticket as an extra, so decide before booking whether you want to ride it.

  2. Book a sunset and stargazing evening in the national park

Evening tours climb to the caldera for sunset above the sea of clouds, then set up telescopes after dark. The listing we checked includes dinner and telescope photos of the Moon or planets.

Best for A clear night with no car to drive back down the mountain

Consider Nights at 2,000m are cold, so bring a warm layer even in August.

  3. Choose a licensed whale-watching boat from the south or west coast

Two-hour trips leave Los Cristianos, and longer sailing trips leave from Los Gigantes, below the cliffs. The Los Cristianos listing ends with a swim stop near the coast, weather permitting.

Best for The short trip for families; the Los Gigantes sail for the cliffs as well

Consider Check the listing for the Barco Azul licence, which binds the skipper to the distance and time limits in the decree.

  4. Take a guided day to La Gomera with the ferry included

Guided La Gomera days handle the ferry crossing and the mountain roads, and reach the laurel forest of Garajonay. The full-day listing we checked includes the return ferry, lunch and pickup.

Best for Seeing Garajonay without driving La Gomera’s roads yourself

Consider The day runs about ten hours, most of it on ferries and mountain roads.

  5. Walk Anaga or the ridges above Masca with a guide

Small-group hikes cover about 12km in the Anaga mountains with transport included. Others walk the forest and ridges above Masca.

Best for Walkers who want the forest and the views without planning buses

Consider The Anaga route covers about 12km over a full day, so it suits walkers used to long hikes.

Choose the right Tenerife tour or boat trip

A guided Teide day, or a jeep or quad?

Book the guided day for the caldera, the rock towers and the chance of the cable car; book a jeep or quad for the drive.

A quad route we checked stops at Vilaflor and at the Boca Tauce viewpoint inside the park.

The trade-off On the quad tour each rider drives, alone or with a passenger, which rules it out for anyone who does not want to drive.

Sunset on Teide, or the full stargazing evening?

Book the full evening if the telescopes matter; a sunset-only trip suits a family with young children.

The evening we checked runs about six and a half hours and includes dinner.

The trade-off It fills the whole late afternoon and night, so plan a slow start the next day.

A short whale trip, or a longer sail?

Book the two-hour trip for young children; book the sail from Los Gigantes for the cliffs and a longer time at sea.

Both work the same licensed waters off the south-west.

The trade-off A longer trip adds time at sea for anyone prone to seasickness.

La Gomera with a guide, or on your own?

Book the guided day to reach Garajonay without a hire car; go alone if you want to stay the night.

The ferry from Los Cristianos takes about 50 minutes each way.

The trade-off A guided day keeps to the group’s stops and timetable.

Anaga forest, or the ridges above Masca?

Book Anaga for laurel forest; book the Masca ridge walk for Masca seen from above.

Both hikes we checked include transport.

The trade-off Both take most of a day: about seven hours above Masca and eight in Anaga.

FAQs about Tenerife

Does a Teide tour take me to the summit?

No listing we found goes to the crater rim. The last 0.69km from the upper cable car station needs a personal permit for a set slot, booked with the national park. Some tours also leave the cable car ticket out, so check the inclusions.

How do I know a whale-watching boat is licensed?

Licensed boats fly the yellow Barco Azul, or Blue Boat, flag with the dates of their authorisation, and carry a guide. The Canary government publishes the list of authorised boats. Some listings describe the licence as a blue flag.

Can I book the Masca ravine descent as a tour?

Not from what we found. The Masca listings visit the hamlet or walk the ridges above it. The descent needs its own slot, the shuttle from Santiago del Teide and a boat or kayak out from the jetty.

Can I buy Siam Park or Loro Parque tickets here?

Siam Park has a quick-entry ticket that skips the ticket-desk queue but not the slide queues, and it cannot be cancelled. We found no Loro Parque ticket listing.

Does a La Gomera day trip include the ferry?

The full-day guided trip we checked includes the return ferry, lunch and pickup. Read each listing’s inclusions for the ferry before booking.

What should I bring on a sunset tour on Teide?

Warm clothes. The caldera floor is about 2,000m up, and temperatures can drop by up to 10°C as you climb through the cloud layer. The upper cable car station has no café, so bring water.
