Rio bookings fall into four kinds: the two summits of Corcovado and Sugarloaf, the Tijuca Forest and the hang-gliding flights over it, samba in the evening, and full days out to Petrópolis or the coast.

Featured products use provider recommendation signals, but editorial choices remain independent of commission, price, availability and review count.

Experiences worth prioritising in Rio de Janeiro

Our planning choices weigh the experience, who it suits and what you give up. Affiliate sales and availability do not determine this order.

  1. Book Christ and Sugarloaf as one guided day, or as separate tickets

Full-day tours bundle hotel pickup in the South Zone, entry at Corcovado, both cable car stages and often the Selarón Steps and a lunch. Separate tickets let you time each summit yourself, such as Sugarloaf at sunset.

Best for The guided day for a first visit with little time; separate tickets for timing each summit to the light

Consider The skip-the-line tickets checked for this page are final once bought, while the full-day tours checked allow free cancellation.

  2. Go up Corcovado on the rack train, or by authorized van

The train climbs from Cosme Velho through the Tijuca National Park on a line running since 1884, and its ticket includes the monument. The Paineiras vans are the only transport allowed up the park road, boarding in Copacabana, at Largo do Machado or at the visitor center.

Best for The train for the ride through the forest; the van for a start close to a South Zone hotel

Consider The train starts in Cosme Velho, away from the beaches, while the vans take the road and miss the forest line.

  3. See the Tijuca Forest on a guided hike, or by jeep

Guided hikes lead to peaks, caves and waterfalls inside the national park. Jeep tours drive between lookouts such as the Vista Chinesa and the Cascatinha waterfall, with short walks at each stop.

Best for The hike for fit walkers; the jeep for lookouts in a half day without the climb

Consider A hike means steep trails that turn muddy after rain; a jeep sees more lookouts but less of the forest floor.

  4. Fly with an instructor from Pedra Bonita to São Conrado beach

Hang-gliding and paragliding flights launch from the Pedra Bonita ramp inside the Tijuca National Park, fly over the forest with a certified instructor and land on the sand at São Conrado.

Best for Seeing Pedra da Gávea, the forest and the coast from the air in one short flight

Consider Flights depend on the day’s wind and weather, so book an early day of the trip and keep a spare day free.

  5. Book a guided samba night, a samba class, or a Carnival parade seat

Pedra do Sal, in the port’s Little Africa, is a center of samba and choro where sambistas such as Donga and Pixinguinha played. A guided samba night takes you there, a class teaches the basic step first, and a parade ticket puts you in the Sambadrome stands for one night.

Best for A samba night or class in any week of the year; a parade seat only if your dates fall on Carnival

Consider Australia lists the Pedra do Sal area as a crime hotspot, which is a reason to go with a group. Carnival parade tickets checked for this page cannot be cancelled.

  6. Choose Petrópolis in the mountains, or Búzios or Arraial do Cabo on the coast

Petrópolis, 40km north, is imperial history: the Imperial Museum in Pedro II’s summer palace and his tomb in the cathedral. Búzios, 173km east, and Arraial do Cabo are beach days, and many tours include a boat trip and lunch.

Best for Petrópolis for history and cooler air; the coast for clear water and a day on a boat

Consider The coast means long hours on the road; Petrópolis is closer, but its mountain road is exposed to heavy summer rain.

Which Rio de Janeiro tour or ticket to book

Christ and Sugarloaf: one guided day, or two tickets?

Book the guided day for a first visit; book the tickets separately to reach Sugarloaf at sunset.

Tours usually collect you from South Zone hotels and add the Selarón Steps or a lunch.

The trade-off The ticket route leaves you to cross between the two summits yourself.

Corcovado: rack train or authorized van?

Take the train for the ride through the forest; take a van for a start in the South Zone.

Van tickets cover the ride up and back from one boarding point plus access to the statue.

The trade-off Either way you book a departure time, so a late start means a later slot at the statue.

Tijuca Forest: hike or jeep?

Hike for the trails and waterfalls; take a jeep for the lookouts in a half day.

The park covers some 39.58 square kilometers, most of it replanted in the 19th century.

The trade-off A guided group sets the route, which is the point in a park where the US advises caution on isolated trails.

Hang gliding or paragliding over São Conrado?

Choose by the flight you want; both launch from Pedra Bonita and land on São Conrado beach.

São Conrado sits between Leblon and Barra da Tijuca, below Pedra da Gávea.

The trade-off Operators set weight limits that can change with the day’s conditions, so check yours before paying.

Samba: a night out, a class, or Carnival?

Book a samba night or class in any week; book a Sambadrome seat only for the 2027 parade nights.

Pedra do Sal has been a gathering place for samba since the days of Donga and Pixinguinha.

The trade-off A samba night ends late, so arrange the ride back before you go.

FAQs about Rio de Janeiro

Does Mubboo list favela tours?

No. All four governments checked for this page, the US, UK, Canadian and Australian, advise against entering favelas even with a guide, so none of the tours here go into one. The people who live in them are residents, not a sightseeing stop.

Can I cancel Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf tickets?

The standalone skip-the-line tickets checked for this page are final once bought. The full-day combination tours checked allow free cancellation, so if your dates may move, the guided day is the flexible choice. Some of those tours do not run during Carnival.

Do I need a guide for the Tijuca Forest?

Not for the lookouts you can drive to. For the longer trails, the US State Department advises extra caution when hiking in isolated areas, which makes a guided hike the practical choice.

Can I walk up Corcovado instead of taking the train?

Walking up is not the route to book around. Two governments name the Corcovado trail as a place where visitors have been robbed, so take the train from Cosme Velho or a Paineiras van, and save hiking for a guided Tijuca trip.

What should I know before booking a Carnival parade ticket?

The 2027 Special Group parades run on 7, 8 and 9 February, and each ticket covers one night. The parade tickets checked for this page cannot be cancelled, so book once your dates are fixed.

Which day trip: Petrópolis, Búzios or Arraial do Cabo?

Petrópolis, 40km north, is the one for imperial history. Búzios, 173km east, and Arraial do Cabo are beach and boat days with more of the day spent on the road.
