Airport-to-City-Centre Access Index 2026: Time, Fare and Taxi Cost in 60 Cities Worldwide

In 20 of 41 cities the fastest public link is also the cheapest ticket, and official figures stop short in 14. The 41 are the cities where both fares could be priced; the 14 are the cities, out of 60, with no verified official fastest time. [S01]

The index measures 60 cities in 39 countries from each city's busiest international airport to one fixed centre point, using only figures that airports, transport operators and regulators publish, retrieved between 26 September 2026 and 27 September 2026. Times are scheduled or stated, not measured. [S01] [S02]

  • Speed: 46 of 60 cities have a verified time; the median is 30 minutes, and 25 of 46 take 30 or less.
  • Range: 13 min in Copenhagen (timetable minimum), Las Vegas (bus to a timepoint) and Sydney; longest verified is Istanbul, 90 min (coach, metro untimed).
  • Price: in 20 of 41 cities with both fares priced the fastest link is the cheapest ticket; Melbourne's costs 9.1 times its cheapest, a half-price fare.
  • Fares: the cheapest walk-up fares run from €0.25 (Mexico City, transfers unconfirmed) to €17.57 (Reykjavík); median €4.59 across 46 cities.
  • Taxis: 10 of 60 cities publish a flat fare we could verify; 18 more get a tariff-based lower bound, never ranked with the flat fares.
Chart: the fastest published public-transport journey from the main airport to the city centre takes 13 to 90 minutes across the 46 of 60 cities with a verified time, median 30 minutes. One dot per city on a minutes scale; Copenhagen, Las Vegas and Sydney are fastest at 13 minutes and Istanbul's 90 minutes by coach is the longest verified.

Airport-to-City-Centre Access Index 2026, explained in 88 seconds

A short animated summary of this report: why the fastest public link from the airport is the same ticket as the cheapest in 20 of 41 cities, how official times run from 13 to 90 minutes, how wide the speed premium and the taxi gap can be, and why 14 cities stay blank rather than estimated. Published official figures only; times are scheduled, not measured.

The fastest way from the airport into town should cost more, right? In twenty of forty-one cities, it's the very same ticket. We checked official figures for sixty cities, from each one's busiest international airport to a stop near one fixed point in the centre. Scheduled times, not measured trips. First, time. Copenhagen, Las Vegas and Sydney all list thirteen minutes, though Copenhagen's is the timetable minimum, and Las Vegas's is a bus to a timepoint. Twenty-five of the forty-six cities with a verified time list half an hour or less. The longest verified is Istanbul: ninety minutes, by coach. Now, the fare. At the median, the fastest link costs just one point two times the cheapest. But the gap can be wide: in Los Angeles, seven point three times. In Melbourne, nine point one, but that's against a temporary half-price fare. At the normal fare, it's four point five. And the taxi? Only ten of sixty cities publish a flat taxi fare we could verify. Where we can compare, it costs two point eight to thirty-one point six times the cheapest public ride. Fourteen cities have no verified fastest time. We left them blank, because a blank is never a zero. So check the time and the fare together. Every figure, with its official source, is free in the full index from Mubboo Flights Research.

Scope and method at a glance

Scope. 60 cities in 39 countries. Each is measured from its busiest international airport to one fixed centre point, by default the seat of the city government. The index records the fastest public trip, the cheapest walk-up fare, official taxi figures, late-night service and what operators say about step-free access. [S01]

Method. A value counts only if an airport, transport operator, city or national authority, regulator or central bank publishes it and the page we captured contains it. Every value has a source URL, a retrieval time and a page hash, and a separate script re-checked it. Third-party route planners and aggregators are not used. The full method is in section 9. [S01] [S02]

What this index adds. Airport-to-city rankings are an established genre, but the better-known ones score cost and distance with a third-party route planner or an aggregator, or mix access with shopping and punctuality, so a figure cannot be traced to an operator. Here every figure traces to an official page, a missing figure is shown as missing, and speed, price and taxi cost are never combined into one score.

Definitions

Centre point. One fixed point per city, by default the seat of the city government. The index measures airport to this point, not to your hotel. Where the seat has moved out of the historic centre, or no single government seat applies, the point differs and is printed in every row of the dataset.

Fastest and cheapest. Fastest is the quickest scheduled or operator-stated public trip ending at a stop within 3 km, straight line, of the centre point. Cheapest is the lowest walk-up adult single fare on any official public route reaching that radius. They are often different services. Passes and online-only prices are excluded.

Flat fare and lower bound. A flat fare is a fixed airport-to-zone taxi fare published by the airport, the city or the regulator. A lower bound is calculated from a regulated meter tariff and the road distance; it is not a quote, because waiting time, surcharges, tolls and tips would add to it. The two are never compared.

Verified. A value read on an official page that we captured, hashed and re-checked. It is a scheduled or stated figure, not a measured journey.

Not verified, not published, no statement. Not verified: the official source could not be reached or confirmed. Not published: the source was read and holds no usable figure. No statement: the source was read and settles nothing on late-night service or step-free access. A blank is never a zero.

1. Copenhagen, Las Vegas and Sydney reach the centre in 13 minutes; Istanbul's 90 is the longest verified

25 of the 46 verified cities reach a stop within 3 km of the centre point in 30 minutes or less; 12 manage it in 20 minutes or less, and 6 take longer than 45. [S01]

The top of the table is dense. 6 cities are at 15 minutes or less: Copenhagen 13 min, Las Vegas 13 min, Sydney 13 min, Delhi 14 min, Frankfurt 14 min, Zurich 15 min. Most of these are rail links that run from under the terminal to a central station. Sydney's 13 minutes is the Airport Link train to Central. [S03]

Two of the three 13-minute figures carry a caveat. Copenhagen's is the shortest scheduled time in the timetable feed; the daytime departures sampled run 13 to 14 minutes. [S04] Las Vegas's is a bus to the Flamingo timepoint, 1.7 km from the Strip point and inside the 3 km radius, and no walk-up fare for it was verified. [S01]

At the slow end, Istanbul's 90 minutes is the longest verified time and the fastest official figure we found for that city: a coach from a new airport far from the old city. The metro connection could not be timed, so a faster official time may exist. [S24]

Kyoto's 78 minutes starts at Kansai, because Kyoto has no airport of its own. Florence's 71 minutes starts at Pisa, which carries more international passengers than Florence's own airport (section 7). [S07]

Route choice matters as much as distance. In Orlando the limited-stop Link 311 bus reaches the International Drive visitor district in 39 minutes; the all-stops Link 42 on the same corridor takes 81, for the same fare. [S06]

Tokyo's 57 minutes starts at Narita, the airport with more international passengers in 2025 (33.95 million against Haneda's 24.33 million), and ends at Shinjuku, where the city government sits: Skyliner to Nippori (36 minutes) then the Yamanote Line (21 minutes). [S08] [S09]

Speed is not the whole answer. A fast express can cost several times the slower option (section 4), and many airports publish no usable time at all (section 3).

Bar chart of the fastest published public-transport journey from the main airport to within 3 km of the city-centre point, 46 of 60 cities. 25 of the 46 take 30 minutes or less; the median is 30 minutes. Copenhagen, Las Vegas and Sydney are fastest at 13 minutes; Istanbul's 90 minutes by coach is the longest verified. No verified time for 14 cities: Antalya, Bangkok, Bogotá, Cairo, Cancún, Cape Town, Doha, Dubai, Lisbon, Mexico City, Nairobi, Singapore, São Paulo, Taipei.

2. The cheapest walk-up fares, and the airport fees inside them

46 cities have a verified walk-up adult single fare that reaches the centre radius; the figure is the lowest such fare found on official pages. Converted at 2026-09-25 official rates, the median is €4.59. The cheapest are Mexico City €0.25, São Paulo €0.91, Bogotá €0.94, the first and third with the caveats below; the dearest are Reykjavík €17.57, Florence (from Pisa) €16.30, Sydney €13.34. [S01] [S10]

Two of the lowest fares need care. In Mexico City the airport operator states the Metro fare, but not that the ticket covers the transfers to the Zócalo, and the Metro's own site could not be reached. In Bogotá (€0.94) the operator does not say outright that the change between buses inside the portal is free. [S14] [S01]

Fares differ by region. The median cheapest fare is €6.86 across 19 European cities and €2.01 across 10 in North America. [S01]

Airport supplements do much of the work. In Sydney the station access fee is A$18.61 of the A$21.64 off-peak fare. In New York the AirTrain fee is $8.75 of the $11.75 subway route. Vancouver adds C$6.50 to a C$5.10 two-zone fare. On the routes we could price, a supplement is most of the cheapest fare in Sydney (86%), New York (74%) and Vancouver (56%). [S11] [S12] [S13]

Not every route could be priced everywhere. In Istanbul, Kyoto, Milan, New York, Osaka, Rome, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Venice and Vienna a cheaper official combination may exist, for example a local bus connecting to the metro, and Table 2 marks them. [S01]

Barcelona and Delhi are missing from the cheapest ranking only because their cheapest fare could not be verified. Barcelona's fastest route costs €7.45 and Delhi's ₹54.00 (€0.49), so the cheapest fare there is at most that. [S01]

Bar chart of the cheapest walk-up public-transport fare from the main airport to the city centre, 46 of 60 cities, in euros at 25 Sep 2026 rates. 17 of the 46 cost under €3; the median is €4.59. From Mexico City at €0.25 to Reykjavík at €17.57.

3. Official figures stop short in 14 of 60 cities, and are thinnest on step-free access

For 14 of the 60 cities there is no verified official fastest-journey figure, and no estimate replaces it. The reasons differ, and Table 3 gives each one. [S01]

In 7 cities (Antalya, Bogotá, Cairo, Dubai, Lisbon, Singapore and São Paulo) the official sources were read but publish no usable airport-to-centre time: only frequencies, first and last trains, a time with no named stop, or a pointer to an app. These are marked not published.

In 3 cities (Bangkok, Doha and Mexico City) the operators' own sites could not be reached from our network, so the figure is marked not verified. It may well be published; a person with a browser may find it.

In Cancún and Taipei the published airport service ends more than 3 km from the centre point and no official onward time could be captured, so there is no comparable figure. [S01]

Cape Town's airport bus route is marked temporarily suspended by its operator. For Nairobi, the airport operator's transport page was down, and the only official statement we found, a 2023 ministry announcement of airport bus routes, gives no times, fares or stops. [S21] [S22]

After midnight, 36 cities have at least one published public departure from the airport toward the centre between midnight and 5am. 5 publish timetables showing none (Abu Dhabi, Johannesburg, Kyoto, Singapore and Washington, D.C.). For 10 more the official source was read but settles nothing either way, and for 9 it could not be read or confirmed. [S01]

New York is one of the 9 marked not verified: the official AirTrain pages we read give frequencies but no operating hours, so overnight service could not be confirmed.

Step-free access is where official information is thinnest. 13 operators state step-free access at both ends of the route, 23 state it at one end or list lifts without saying the route is step-free, 19 say nothing, and for 5 the source could not be read. No operator states that the route is not step-free, which is not the same as saying it is.

Table A1 gives both statements for every city, and Figure 3 shows how many cities publish each kind of information.

Three stacked bars, each covering all 60 cities. Fastest journey time: verified 46; service ends over 3 km out or suspended 3; read, no usable time 7; could not be read 4. Public service between 00:00 and 04:59: yes 36; no 5; read, no statement 10; not verified 9. Step-free route, airport to centre: yes, both ends 13; partly 23; stated no 0; read, no statement 19; not verified 5.

5. Only 10 of 60 cities publish a flat taxi fare we could verify

We could verify an official flat taxi fare from the airport to a zone containing the centre point for 10 of the 60 cities. Where the published fare covers the mandatory charges, they run from €24.80 in Vancouver to €114.00 in Milan.

Two published fares leave charges out, so they are listed but not in that range: Las Vegas (€23.02, zone fare before the 3% excise tax, the $2.40 airport pick-up fee, the $1.00 fuel surcharge and any card fee) and Tokyo (€175.29, flat fare before expressway tolls, which the passenger pays). Sydney's A$60.00 is a fixed-fare trial.

Athens changed its fixed fare on 18 September 2026, but the official notice could not be read, so it is not counted. Rome's flat fare of €55.00 compares with €7.00 for the cheapest bus. [S18] [S05]

Elsewhere a meter runs. For 18 cities with no official flat fare, section 6 gives a figure calculated from the regulated tariff; it is never ranked with the flat fares.

Where the official tariff is a maximum rather than a fixed rate, as in Japan, Sydney, Melbourne, Dublin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Prague and Zurich, no lower bound can be derived from it, and those cities are left out of the calculation.

Dumbbell chart of the 9 cities with both an official flat daytime taxi fare and a cheapest public fare, sorted by how many times dearer the taxi is: Los Angeles €1.53 by public transport and €48.36 by taxi (31.6×); Tokyo (Narita) €7.26 by public transport and €175.29 by taxi (24.1×); Paris €4.60 by public transport and €56.00 by taxi (12.2×); Milan €10.00 by public transport and €114.00 by taxi (11.4×); Rome €7.00 by public transport and €55.00 by taxi (7.9×); Madrid €5.00 by public transport and €33.00 by taxi (6.6×); New York €10.30 by public transport and €67.31 by taxi (6.5×); Vancouver €7.19 by public transport and €24.80 by taxi (3.4×); Sydney €13.34 by public transport and €36.99 by taxi (2.8×). Tokyo (Narita)'s taxi fare is flat fare before expressway tolls, which the passenger pays.

For the 18 cities with a fixed regulated meter tariff and no official flat fare, Table 5 gives a lower bound, not a quote: flag fall plus the per-kilometre rate times the road distance from the airport to the centre point. Waiting time, surcharges, tolls and tips would all add to it.

The road distance comes from OpenStreetMap routing and is shown with each row, so the calculation can be repeated. Cities whose official tariff is a maximum rather than a fixed rate are not in this table. [S01]

Florence (from Pisa) is the outlier at €202.96: Pisa is the index's primary airport for the city (section 7), and the lower bound runs over 86.6 road km. The next highest is London at €97.43 over 30.9 road km.

Table 5. Taxi fare from the official tariff: a lower bound from the official tariff, not a quote. Flag fall plus the regulated per-km rate times the OpenStreetMap road distance, airport to centre point; waiting time, surcharges, tolls and tips excluded. 18 cities with a fixed regulated tariff and no official flat fare (in Singapore, taxi companies set their own rates; the lowest published rate is used). Never compare with the official flat fares in Table 4 [S01] [S10]. 18 rows; scroll within the table.

7. Florence's busiest international airport is Pisa, 71 minutes away

The index takes each city's airport with the most international passengers. For Florence that is Pisa: 4,429,562 international passengers in 2025 against 3,334,373 at Florence's own airport, according to the national aviation authority's traffic report. [S19]

From Pisa the fastest published connection is the airport people mover, a scheduled wait at Pisa Centrale, and a regional train to Santa Maria Novella: 71 minutes and €16.30. From Florence's own airport, tram T2 reaches the centre in 20 minutes for €2.00. [S07] [S20] [S25]

Both are true, and a traveller booking a Florence trip meets both. The index row uses Pisa; the Florence airport figures are given here as a comparison, with their sources in the source register.

8. Limits: what this index cannot tell you

Published times are scheduled or stated, not measured. Traffic, delays, terminal walks and immigration are not in them. Values reflect the timetables in force when they were retrieved; 6 rows carry a seasonal or temporary-operation flag, including Vienna's replacement coaches, Paris's works timetable and Victoria's temporary half-price fares in Melbourne. [S28]

Melbourne's cheapest fare is kept as published on the retrieval date. Victoria's half-price scheme applies from 1 June 2026 to 1 January 2027 and excludes SkyBus, so the 9.1 times gap is 4.5 times at the normal fare. [S28]

A fixed centre point is a convention. The index measures airport to one point, not to your hotel. A different point, or a different airport in a multi-airport city, would give a different number, which is why the point and the airport are printed in every row. When you quote a figure, quote them with it.

Late-night and step-free access are reported as operators state them, not as an audit of the route.

For 10 cities the primary airport is provisional, because a competing airport's international statistic could not be retrieved; the dataset says which.

Missing values are not zeros, and a city's position in a table says nothing about the quality of its service. Retrying the blocked sources from another network may close some of the gaps; the next edition will try.

9. Method: how the index is built

Primary airport: the candidate with the most international passengers in the latest full year, from the airport operator's or national authority's statistics. Where a competing airport's statistic could not be retrieved, the row says provisional.

Centre point: the seat of the city government. Where the city government has moved out of the historic centre, the historic seat (Buenos Aires, Bolívar 1); London uses Guildhall, the seat of the City of London Corporation. Vancouver's City Hall is on West 12th Avenue, south of downtown. Las Vegas, Orlando and Cancún use a named visitor-district point, and Miami the county government centre downtown.

Fastest journey: the fastest operator-stated or scheduled trip to any stop within 3 km, straight line, of the centre point, including scheduled transfer waits where the operators publish them. In London, Miami, New York, Osaka and Tokyo the legs are stated separately and the interchange wait is not included; the dataset flags these rows.

Where an operator publishes a range of journey times, the lower end is used and the range is kept in the dataset. Operators' own journey planners and timetable feeds count as official sources; third-party route planners and aggregators do not. OpenStreetMap supplies coordinates where an official page gives only an address.

Fares are walk-up adult singles with airport supplements, converted at one date using ECB reference rates or, for currencies the ECB does not publish, the national central bank's rate via the US dollar. [S10] [S23]

One exception is published here. By owner decision, Miami is measured to the Metrorail station at its centre point, 18 minutes, not to a stop just inside the radius. Both journeys depend on a scheduled same-minute connection from the airport mover to the train; with a three-minute connection this one would take 21. [S01]

Every value was checked against the captured page by a separate script: the file hash, the value itself, and, for derived values, each component and the arithmetic. A value that failed was dropped, not kept with a caveat. [S01]

Values were retrieved between 26 September 2026 and 27 September 2026 and reflect summer timetables. Only Mubboo's derived values are published; the source pages themselves are not redistributed.

10. Edition and corrections

This is version 1.1 of the 2026 Edition, revised on 5 October 2026. It changes the title, the order of the sections and the wording, and adds the count of countries covered. No figure, ranking, quote or source changed: both versions are built from the same frozen results (SHA-256 fb77cc002246…) and the same dataset.

Corrections are welcome and are dated on this page rather than applied silently; write to support@mubboo.flights. Each edition stays published at its own address; a later edition adds to the record rather than replacing what this one said.

Appendix A. All 60 cities at a glance

Table A1 lists every city in the index, in alphabetical order, with the figures a traveller is most likely to want: the fastest service and how often it runs, both fares, the taxi figure, and late-night and step-free access. It is a reference table, not a ranking: the index has no combined score. [S01]

Each measure is ranked on its own in the sections above, and each ranking covers only the cities with a verified value for that measure.

Table A1. All 60 cities in alphabetical order. A reference table, not a ranking: the index has no combined score. Summer timetables; euros at 2026-09-25 official rates. † interchange wait not included; * caveat in the dataset. Taxi: an official flat fare, or a lower bound from the regulated meter tariff, which is not a quote. Late night means a published departure between 00:00 and 04:59; no statement means the source was read and said nothing, not verified that it could not be read. Centre points are city halls unless section 9 says otherwise (Vancouver's City Hall is south of downtown). Source of every value: the CSV download [S01] [S10]. 60 rows; scroll within the table.

FAQ

How long does it take to get from the airport to the city centre?

Across the 46 cities with a verified time, the fastest published public-transport journey has a median of 30 minutes; 25 take 30 minutes or less. It ranges from 13 minutes (Copenhagen, timetable minimum; Las Vegas, bus to a timepoint; Sydney) to 90 minutes (Istanbul by coach, the longest verified). These are scheduled or operator-stated times, not measured trips.

Is the fastest airport link more expensive than the cheapest option?

Not always. In 20 of the 41 cities with both fares published, the fastest route is also the cheapest ticket; at the median it costs 1.2 times the cheapest. The widest gaps are Melbourne, 9.1 times but only against a temporary half-price fare (4.5 at the normal fare), and Los Angeles, 7.3 times.

Which cities publish a flat taxi fare from the airport?

10 of the 60: Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Madrid, Milan, New York, Paris, Rome, Sydney, Tokyo (Narita) and Vancouver. The Las Vegas fare excludes tax and fees, the Tokyo (Narita) fare excludes expressway tolls, and Sydney's is a fixed-fare trial. For 18 more cities the report gives a lower bound from the regulated meter tariff, which is not a quote.

How do you get from Pisa airport to Florence, and how long does it take?

The fastest published connection is the Pisamover to Pisa Centrale, then a regional train to Firenze Santa Maria Novella: 71 minutes by the timetable, including the wait at Pisa Centrale, for €16.30. The index measures Florence from Pisa, its busiest international airport in 2025; from Florence's own airport, tram T2 takes 20 minutes for €2.00.

Is this a ranking of the best airports?

No. It measures published figures for getting from one airport to one point in the city: time, fare, taxi, late-night and step-free access. It says nothing about the airport itself, and a city's place in a table is not a quality judgment.

Why are some big cities missing from the time ranking?

Because no official fastest-journey figure could be verified for them. In half of them the operators publish no usable airport-to-centre time; a few official sites could not be reached; and in the rest the service ends too far from the centre or does not run. No estimate is substituted.

Why is Florence measured from Pisa?

The index uses each city's airport with the most international passengers. In 2025 that was Pisa, not Florence's own airport. The report gives the Florence airport figures as a comparison, with sources in the source register.

Is the taxi figure what I will pay?

The official flat fares are published prices, though Tokyo's leaves out expressway tolls and Las Vegas's tax. The other taxi figure is calculated from the official tariff and road distance, not a quote: waiting time, surcharges, tolls and tips are not in it.

Can we reuse the charts and the data?
