Experiences worth prioritising in Puerto Vallarta

Our planning choices weigh the experience, who it suits and what you give up. Affiliate sales and availability do not determine this order.

  1. Book a Hidden Beach landing or a Marietas snorkel tour

Only permitted operators can take guests into Playa del Amor, within 116 visitors a day and never on Mondays or Tuesdays. Other Marietas tours snorkel around the islands without landing, since landing is barred on most of the archipelago.

Best for A Hidden Beach landing for confident swimmers on a Wednesday-to-Sunday date; a snorkel tour for families or any day of the week

Consider A landing product is limited by permits, age rules and sea conditions; a snorkel-only tour sees the islands but not the beach inside the crater.

  2. Book a biologist-led whale trip or an all-inclusive whale cruise

Whale tours run only inside the federal December-to-March window. Puerto Vallarta inventory includes small-group trips led by biologists and larger cruises with food and drinks aboard.

Best for A biologist-led boat for watching and learning; a cruise for groups who want a social morning on the water

Consider Either way, boats must keep out of the calving zones near the Marietas and along the Punta Mita shore, so no operator can promise close encounters.

  3. Book a Los Arcos snorkel or a full southern-coast cruise

Los Arcos is a protected snorkelling area off Mismaloya, close to town. Yelapa and Majahuitas are further south on a coast without roads, so cruises there take most of the day.

Best for Los Arcos for a half-day in the water; a southern cruise for beaches, lunch and a waterfall walk

Consider The half-day leaves the afternoon free but sees only the rocks; the cruise commits the whole day to the boat's schedule.

  4. Take the Yelapa water taxi or book a guided boat day

Hourly water taxis from Los Muertos pier and Boca de Tomatlán reach Yelapa without a booking. A guided boat day adds snorkelling stops, lunch and a fixed return.

Best for The water taxi for independent travellers; a guided day for first-timers who want the logistics handled

Consider The water taxi leaves you to judge swell and the last boat back; a tour fixes the timetable and the stops for you.

  5. Book a Sierra Madre ATV ride or a San Sebastián del Oeste day

ATV tours climb the Cuale River valley into the mountains directly behind the city. San Sebastián del Oeste is a separate full day, about an hour and a half inland to a 1605 mining town.

Best for The ATV ride for a half-day of dirt roads and river crossings; San Sebastián for history and mountain scenery

Consider ATV rides are dusty and physical, and the driver must be at ease on rough tracks. The mountain town is a long road day with no off-road driving.

Choose the right Puerto Vallarta tour

Hidden Beach landing or Marietas snorkel?

Book the landing for a Wednesday-to-Sunday date if everyone in your group can swim the tunnel; otherwise take the snorkel tour.

The 116-a-day cap is spread across permitted operators, so landing products sell out first in winter.

The trade-off If sea conditions close the tunnel on the day, a landing product becomes a snorkel tour; check how each product handles that before paying.

Biologist-led whale trip or whale cruise?

Pick a biologist-led small boat if you want to learn to read behaviour, or an all-inclusive cruise if the day is a group outing.

Both run only between December and March.

The trade-off A cruise ticket usually means a longer, fixed time aboard with food; a small boat is shorter and more exposed to spray and swell.

Los Arcos half-day or southern-coast cruise?

Pick Los Arcos for a morning in the water close to town; pick a Yelapa and Majahuitas cruise for a full day of beaches.

Los Arcos is protected by a 1975 federal decree.

The trade-off A snorkel morning depends on the day's visibility, which no booking can promise; a beach cruise still delivers its stops in murky water.

Sierra Madre ATV or San Sebastián day?

Pick the ATV ride for a half-day in the Cuale valley; pick San Sebastián del Oeste for a full day in a mining town.

Both head into the Sierra Madre behind the city.

The trade-off Summer rain can turn the valley tracks to mud and cut an ATV ride short, so the paved road to San Sebastián is the steadier wet-season choice.

Taco tour or tequila and raicilla tasting?

Pick an evening taco tour to learn the street-food stands; pick a tasting if agave spirits are the interest.

Raicilla is protected by a 2019 denomination of origin covering Puerto Vallarta.

The trade-off A taco tour is a walking evening with set stops; a tasting is seated and short, and some bundle an ATV ride or horseback trip first.

FAQs about Puerto Vallarta

Is access to the Hidden Beach guaranteed on a Marietas tour?

No. Operators describe access as depending on permits, weather and sea conditions, and one the booking platform-listed product states it is not guaranteed and refunds its deposit if access is denied. Read each product's terms before booking.

Are there age limits for the Hidden Beach swim?

Yes, set by operators. One does not take children under 10 or guests over 65 on the landing, and a the booking platform-listed product requires a minimum age of 10 with an accompanying adult.

Should I leave for the Marietas from Puerto Vallarta or Punta Mita?

Punta Mita is closer: about 20 minutes by boat against roughly 45 from Puerto Vallarta. Leaving from town saves the road trip north; leaving from Punta Mita gives more time on the water.

Can I book a whale tour in April or summer?

No. Whale tours run only inside the federal observation window, which for 2025-2026 was 8 December to 23 March. Outside it, choose a snorkel or coastal cruise instead.

Why do Sayulita tours not appear here?

Sayulita is its own the booking platform destination in Nayarit (24342). A Sayulita search scoped to Puerto Vallarta returned no products on 27 September 2026, so surf lessons there are booked under Sayulita.

Is a free tour offered at the airport a real deal?

Usually it comes with a timeshare presentation attached. Booking a tour directly avoids the sales pitch, and if you do sign a timeshare contract, PROFECO gives you 5 business days to cancel.

Do boat tours run in hurricane season?

Most days, yes, but the port can close when a storm approaches. After Hurricane Polo in September 2026, navigation and water activities were back to normal within days. Choose free-cancellation options from June to November.
