Orlando travel guide

Orlando

Orlando is two trips in one: theme parks that each fill a day or more, and an older city of lakes, springs and small downtowns around them. Walt Disney World, Universal and SeaWorld are separate resorts with their own tickets. Choose the parks before you choose where to sleep.

Plan Orlando by time and budget

Top experiences

Top experiences in Orlando

Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World lists four theme parks, Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and two water parks. Tickets are date-based with a chosen start date, and a Park Hopper option extends a ticket to a second park.

Best for: Families and repeat visitors building the trip around several park days · Area: Walt Disney World Resort, in the Disney Resorts and Lake Buena Vista areas

Plan for Lightning Lane is a separate purchase for shorter lines. A Multi Pass covers up to three experiences in one park, and high-demand rides sit in a Single Pass, so queue-skipping is decided ahead of the day.

Lagoon and roller coaster inside Universal Islands of Adventure

Universal Orlando Resort

Universal Orlando Resort names Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure, Universal Epic Universe and Universal Volcano Bay among its parks. Epic Universe has its own one-park ticket and is marked as included in multi-day Park-to-Park tickets.

Best for: Thrill-ride visitors comparing a second resort with Disney · Area: Universal Orlando Resort, along Universal Boulevard

Plan for Volcano Bay and Epic Universe are parks of their own, so each one added takes a day and not an afternoon.

Space Shuttle Atlantis on display at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

Kennedy Space Center

The visitor complex at Merritt Island on the Space Coast includes the Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour, which stops at The Gantry at LC-39 and the Apollo/Saturn V Center. Admission also covers Space Shuttle Atlantis, the Shuttle Launch Experience, Gateway and Heroes and Legends.

Best for: Space and history visitors willing to leave town for the day · Area: Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Merritt Island on the Space Coast

Plan for The last bus tour leaves well before the complex closes, so the day is built around a morning start. On launch days bus routes and admission validity can change at short notice, and the visitor complex runs no transport from Orlando.

Kraken roller coaster and lakeside grounds at SeaWorld Orlando from the Sky Tower

SeaWorld Orlando

SeaWorld Orlando combines rides, animal presentations and animal experiences in one park, with Aquatica and Discovery Cove listed beside it as separate Orlando parks. A Quick Queue upgrade with reserved seating is sold on top of admission.

Best for: Visitors who want animals and roller coasters in the same day · Area: SeaWorld Orlando, on the International Drive corridor

Plan for A SeaWorld day competes for the same calendar as Disney and Universal, and its presentations run to a schedule, so plan the day around show times.

Swimming area at the spring in Wekiwa Springs State Park

Wekiwa Springs State Park

A spring at Wekiwa holds water at 72 degrees all year, and the state park describes visitors flocking there since the mid-19th century. Canoes and kayaks are available on site, and miles of trails run through hammocks and sandhill.

Best for: Swimmers, paddlers and hikers who want shade between park days · Area: Wekiwa Springs State Park, near Apopka

Plan for Day-use entry needs a reservation, including for annual passholders, because gate queues stretched into traffic. Bookings open 60 days ahead, with same-day slots only until the daily limit is reached.

Manatees in the clear spring run at Blue Spring State Park

Blue Spring manatee season

From mid-November to March hundreds of manatees shelter in the spring run at Blue Spring State Park, and the park counted a record 729 in 2023. The spring is 72 degrees, and the park’s concession runs a two-hour narrated cruise on the St. Johns River.

Best for: Wildlife visitors travelling between November and March · Area: Blue Spring State Park, Orange City on the St. Johns River

Plan for The park frequently reaches capacity and can close for hours, and day-use reservations apply here as at Wekiwa. Outside manatee season the run is a swimming spring, with swimming season from 1 April to 14 November.

Canal beneath Spanish moss in Winter Park

Winter Park lakes and Park Avenue

Winter Park sits three miles north of Orlando. Its Scenic Boat Tour runs a one-hour narrated cruise through the chain of lakes, Park Avenue holds the historic downtown, and the Morse Museum describes its Louis Comfort Tiffany holdings as the world’s most comprehensive.

Best for: Walkers, boat riders and art visitors who want a calmer day · Area: Winter Park, three miles north of downtown Orlando

Plan for The Scenic Boat Tour leaves hourly from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on a first-come basis, so a late start can miss the last boat. The museum and Park Avenue can fill the rest of the day if the boats are missed.

Lake Eola fountain and amphitheater with the downtown Orlando skyline

Lake Eola and downtown Orlando

A 0.9-mile sidewalk circles Lake Eola, the City of Orlando rents pedal swan boats with limited hours, and the Walt Disney Amphitheater on the shore hosts concerts and plays. The Orlando Farmers Market is hosted in the park.

Best for: Evening walkers and downtown visitors with an hour or two · Area: Downtown Orlando

Plan for Swan boat hours are limited and the park is small, so it suits an evening or a gap and not a day of its own.

American alligator with open mouth at Gatorland

Gatorland

Gatorland calls itself the Alligator Capital of the World and opens every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine. Alligator exhibits sit beside a zip line, an off-road adventure and daily shows.

Best for: Families and animal lovers who want a smaller park day · Area: Gatorland, Orlando area

Plan for Its hours run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so it fills a daytime slot and cannot be an evening plan.

Plan one, three or five days in Orlando

One day: one park, then one evening choice

Spend the whole day inside one park and use the evening for the district you are sleeping in.

Disney Springs suits a Disney base, ICON Park an International Drive base and Lake Eola a downtown base.

The trade-off A second park ticket would spend the day travelling between resort areas.

Three days: two park days and one day without a ticket

Put two park days in one resort and keep the third for Winter Park, Wekiwa Springs or, from November to March, Blue Spring.

Both springs need a day-use reservation, so secure that slot before you choose which day the parks take.

The trade-off A third park day is tempting, but it removes the one day that does not depend on a park’s schedule.

Five days: a Space Coast day and a spare day

Add Kennedy Space Center as its own day and hold one day open for weather, for Epic Universe or for a second resort.

The visitor complex is a road journey from Orlando, so it needs a morning departure and a return that does not depend on a park closing time.

The trade-off From June to August each month averages more than 7 inches of rain, and a spare day is what lets a wet one pass.

Choose an Orlando base and explore nearby

Walt Disney World and Lake Buena Vista: park mornings on the doorstep

Base here when three or more days belong to Disney parks.

Disney Springs sits in the same district for evenings, so a park day rarely needs a second base.

The trade-off Winter Park, downtown and the springs are separate journeys from here.

International Drive: the trolley base for Universal and SeaWorld

Base on International Drive when Universal or SeaWorld days dominate and you would rather not rent a car.

The I-RIDE Trolley runs daily until 10:30 p.m., and its Green Line follows Universal Boulevard.

The trade-off The trolley never leaves the corridor, so a Disney day needs its own transport plan.

Downtown Orlando or Winter Park: a base for the second layer

Base downtown or in Winter Park when lakes, museums and evenings matter more than daily park mornings, and add park days by car.

SunRail links Church Street and Winter Park on weekdays.

The trade-off Every park day is a road journey, and on weekends SunRail does not run.

Arrival and getting around

Orlando International Airport (MCO) has the Brightline station beside Terminal C, with service to Miami and stops at West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and Aventura. SunRail does not reach the airport directly; its Sand Lake Road station connects by LYNX bus.

Beyond the airport the region works as separate transport pockets. The I-RIDE Trolley covers only International Drive, SunRail runs a 61-mile line with 17 stations on weekdays only, and LYNX buses cover Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties. Most outings beyond the resort areas are therefore by road.

Best time to visit

Winter (December to February)

Mean daily highs at the airport run from 71.8°F in January to 74.9°F in February, lows run from about 49 to 53°F, and monthly rain stays around 2 to 2.5 inches. These are among the driest, mildest months for long park days, and Blue Spring’s manatees are in the spring run from mid-November to March.

Crowds
Varies by event and attraction

Spring (March to May)

Highs climb from 78.9°F in March to 88.4°F in May, and lows reach the mid-60s by May. May is the first month to average more than 4 inches of rain, before June brings 8.05 inches.

Crowds
Varies by event and attraction

Summer (June to August)

Mean daily highs are about 91 to 92°F with lows above 71°F, and each month from June to August averages more than 7 inches of rain. Keep an indoor fallback in the plan for every outdoor block.

Crowds
Varies by event and attraction

Autumn (September to November)

September still averages 89.6°F highs and 6.37 inches of rain, while October and November fall to 3.46 and 1.79 inches. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, so a September or October booking needs flexible plans.

Food, markets and eating out

Orlando’s food is spread across its districts and not gathered in one dining quarter. Disney lists Disney Springs as a shopping, dining and entertainment district, and ICON Park lists a long run of restaurants and bars. The City of Winter Park describes Park Avenue as a street of outdoor cafés and bistros.

For a market, the Orlando Farmers Market is hosted at Lake Eola, and Winter Park has a farmers’ market beside its Historical Museum that the city calls award-winning. Either gives a slow morning to a day that would otherwise start at a park gate.

City profile

  • Population (City of Orlando municipal boundary, not Orange County or the metropolitan area; U.S. Census Bureau estimate, 1 July 2025, 2025): 333,888

Orlando incorporated as a town on 31 July 1875 with 85 residents and became a city in 1885. It grew from Fort Gatlin, built during the Second Seminole War, and became the county seat when Orange County was created in 1845.

Lake Eola began as a sinkhole on land Jacob Summerlin bought in 1873, and his family donated the shoreline for public use in 1883.

The city limits cover more than 110 square miles, so the resort areas, downtown and Winter Park are separate places on a large map.

Famous for:

  • Separately ticketed resorts: Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld Orlando each fill days on their own.
  • Spring-fed state parks and lake canals, from Wekiwa Springs and Blue Spring to the Winter Park chain of lakes.

Why Orlando splits into park days and everything else

Walt Disney World lists four theme parks and two water parks, Universal Orlando Resort has its own group of parks, and SeaWorld runs a park on International Drive. Each is a full day with its own tickets, so the parks you pick shape the trip more than any other choice.

The second layer is easy to miss. Wekiwa Springs and Blue Spring hold 72 degree water, Winter Park has brick streets and lake canals, and Kennedy Space Center is a day on the Space Coast. None needs a park ticket, but most need a car and an early start.

Planning your Orlando visit: FAQs

Do I need a car in Orlando?

One resort area works without one: the I-RIDE Trolley covers International Drive, and MCO lists shuttles and buses to each zone. A car matters for Kennedy Space Center, which runs no transport from Orlando, and for the state-park springs, which sit outside the trolley area.

Does the train go to Disney or Universal?

No. Brightline runs from the airport station to Miami and its South Florida stops. SunRail runs a weekday line through downtown Orlando and Winter Park, with a LYNX bus link to the airport, and none of its stations is named for a theme park.

Which springs need a reservation?

Wekiwa Springs and Blue Spring both require day-use reservations, and at Wekiwa that includes annual passholders. Entry is paid online when you book, and a cancelled reservation is refundable while a no-show is not.

When can I see manatees near Orlando?

From mid-November to March, at Blue Spring State Park, where hundreds shelter in the spring run. Outside those months the run is a swimming spring, so a summer visit is not a manatee trip.

Is Epic Universe part of a normal Universal ticket?

Treat it as a separate park. Universal sells Epic Universe with its own one-park ticket and marks its multi-day Park-to-Park tickets as including it, so check which parks a ticket names before assuming a day at each is covered.

What changes at Kennedy Space Center on a launch day?

Viewing is typically included with admission when the launch window falls within operating hours. When it falls well outside, Launch Transportation Tickets are sold on top, and crewed launches can have packages for which annual passes may not be valid.

When does hurricane season affect a trip?

The Atlantic season runs from 1 June to 30 November, so it covers the whole of summer and autumn. Rainfall at the airport peaks from June to September, and an October or November booking meets the tail of the season.
