Miami travel guide
Miami
Miami works best as a bay-and-neighbourhood trip. Pair South Beach’s Art Deco streets with a separate mainland day in Little Havana or Downtown; give the water or the Everglades its own outing. Miami Beach is a separate city across the bay, so a beach hotel is not a walking base for the mainland.

South Beach Art Deco Historic District
Ocean Drive and nearby streets hold preserved Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern buildings. The district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
Best for: Architecture visitors who want an unticketed first walk · Area: South Beach, City of Miami Beach
Plan for The façades are free to see outdoors, while a guided walk adds design history and a fixed meeting time.

Lummus Park and South Beach
The City of Miami Beach maintains Lummus Park beside the ocean, with a beachfront path, public restrooms and a playground.
Best for: Visitors seeking a flexible beach and walking day · Area: South Beach, City of Miami Beach
Plan for A beach day depends on conditions and sun exposure; it leaves little time for a mainland museum across the bay.

Calle Ocho and Domino Park
Calle Ocho runs through Little Havana’s Cuban cultural district; Máximo Gómez Park is a public gathering place known for its domino tables.
Best for: Visitors interested in food, music and living neighbourhood culture · Area: Little Havana, west of Downtown Miami
Plan for Watch the public games respectfully. A guided food walk adds context, but its stops and tastings vary by operator.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
James Deering began winter residence in Vizcaya’s Main House in 1916; the estate now pairs that furnished house with formal gardens.
Best for: Visitors wanting a historic house and garden visit · Area: Coconut Grove edge, south of Downtown
Plan for Admission covers a defined estate visit; leave time for both house and gardens instead of squeezing it between unrelated districts.

Biscayne Bay by boat
A short bay cruise frames Downtown and Miami Beach from the water. Biscayne National Park excursions are a different, longer boat decision, with snorkeling and island visits described by the National Park Service.
Best for: Visitors who want a water perspective without giving away a whole day · Area: Biscayne Bay; departure point varies by product
Plan for A skyline cruise does not include a Biscayne National Park outing; confirm the named departure pier and route before booking.

Pérez Art Museum Miami
PAMM’s permanent collection emphasizes art linked to Latin America, the Caribbean, the African diaspora and the US Latinx experience in a waterfront museum.
Best for: Contemporary-art visitors who want a mainland museum · Area: Downtown Miami waterfront
Plan for Check the exhibition and admission conditions for the chosen date; it is a separate paid stop from the free bayfront walk.

Wynwood murals
Wynwood is a mural district with the ticketed Wynwood Walls open-air museum at its core.
Best for: Street-art visitors comparing free exterior murals with a curated venue · Area: Wynwood, north of Downtown
Plan for The surrounding streets and Wynwood Walls are different access choices; confirm what a tour or admission actually includes.

Coconut Grove waterfront
Coconut Grove is an older bayside neighbourhood with gardens, waterfront parks and a slower street pattern than Brickell or South Beach.
Best for: Visitors wanting a lower-key bayside afternoon · Area: Coconut Grove, south of Downtown
Plan for It is a separate outing from South Beach; choose it for time outdoors rather than as a quick detour between beach stops.

Everglades Shark Valley
Shark Valley has a 15-mile paved loop and an observation tower; the park concessioner runs a two-hour interpretive tram.
Best for: Wildlife-focused visitors able to devote most of a day · Area: Everglades National Park, west of Miami
Plan for The National Park Service warns there is no public transit and app-based return rides may fail; nearby airboat concessions are not at the visitor center.
Plan one, three or five days around Miami’s bay
One day: choose a shore
Make South Beach your Art Deco and beach day, or keep the whole day on the mainland with Little Havana and a museum.
Miami Beach and Miami city are separate municipalities divided by Biscayne Bay.
The trade-off Trying to include both shores in a short day turns the middle into a transfer.
Three days: beach, mainland and one water choice
Give South Beach a day, use another for Little Havana and PAMM, then reserve a bay cruise or a Vizcaya visit for day three.
A boat departure fixes the timing of the third day; plan the rest around that meeting point.
The trade-off A National Park boat trip needs a longer block than a city skyline cruise.
Five days: add a neighbourhood and a nature excursion
Use extra days for Wynwood or Coconut Grove, then a separate Shark Valley or Biscayne National Park outing.
Shark Valley’s tram and the park’s boat programs are different trips.
The trade-off Shark Valley requires reliable return transport; it is not a spontaneous rideshare detour.

Choose a Miami base with the day trips in mind
South Beach: architecture and beach on your doorstep
Base here when Ocean Drive and Lummus Park will be repeated stops.
Both sit in the separate City of Miami Beach.
The trade-off Downtown museums and Little Havana require a cross-bay trip.
Downtown and Brickell: bay departures and mainland connections
Base here for PAMM, a bay cruise and free Metromover use.
The Metromover serves Downtown, Omni and Brickell loops.
The trade-off South Beach is outside that free loop.
Coconut Grove: gardens and a quieter waterfront
Base here when Vizcaya and the Grove are a bigger draw than South Beach nightlife.
The district has bayfront spaces and Vizcaya nearby.
The trade-off A quick beach visit means a cross-city transfer.

Arrival and getting around
Miami International Airport (MIA) connects to the Miami Intermodal Center by the MIA Mover. Metrorail serves mainland districts, while Route 150 serves Miami Beach; choose the onward leg for the actual hotel rather than treating both as one route.
Within Downtown and Brickell, the Metromover is free and loops through several districts. That convenience does not extend across the bay to South Beach or west to Shark Valley, which the National Park Service says has no public transportation.
Best time to visit
Winter (December–February)
The drier part of the 1991–2020 Miami climate pattern generally makes long walks and the Everglades easier to schedule than the wettest summer months.
- Crowds
- Varies by event and attraction
Spring (March–May)
A transition from the drier winter pattern toward hotter, wetter months; leave a weather alternative for a boat or garden day.

Summer (June–August)
Hot, humid and wetter in the 1991–2020 climate normals; plan shade and a flexible indoor museum option around outdoor time.

Food and neighbourhood life
Build a Little Havana food outing around Calle Ocho rather than assuming one tasting stop represents all of Miami. The street is a living cultural corridor, and a guided food walk is useful only when its named stops and inclusions fit your appetite and time.
Coconut Grove and Wynwood offer a different meal rhythm: pair a garden or waterfront afternoon in the Grove with a relaxed stop, or make murals the focus before eating in Wynwood. Keep either neighbourhood as its own outing instead of adding both to a cross-bay beach day.
City profile
- Population (City of Miami municipal boundary, not Miami Beach or Miami-Dade County; U.S. Census Bureau estimate, 1 July 2025, 2025): 489,812
Miami incorporated in July 1896 after Julia Tuttle helped bring the railroad south. Miami Beach incorporated separately in 1915.
Vizcaya’s James Deering began winter residence in the Main House in 1916; the estate survives as a museum and gardens.
Famous for:
- South Beach’s preserved Art Deco streets and a public oceanfront walk.
- Calle Ocho, Biscayne Bay and mainland neighbourhoods with distinct cultural and water experiences.
Why Miami rewards a planned first visit
South Beach’s preserved architecture, Little Havana’s cultural streets, PAMM’s collection and the Everglades are genuinely different outings. Their range is the appeal of a Miami stay.
The same variety spreads the visit across separate districts and even separate municipalities. Put one side of the bay at the centre of each day rather than treating every landmark as a short walk.
- Best first split
- South Beach · Mainland Miami · Water or nature
- First stay
- 3 focused days, 5 with a nature excursion
- Miami Beach
- A separate city across Biscayne Bay
- Main airport
- MIA · MIA Mover to transit links
Planning your Miami visit: FAQs
Is Miami Beach part of Miami city?
No. Miami Beach incorporated separately in 1915. This guide includes South Beach because it is central to a Greater Miami visit, but the 489,812 city population estimate refers only to Miami city.
Is South Beach or Downtown a better first base?
Choose South Beach for repeated beach and Art Deco time. Choose Downtown or Brickell for mainland museums, Metromover and bay departures; each requires a cross-bay trip to reach the other.
Can I see the Everglades without a car?
A product may provide transport, but Shark Valley itself has no public transit and app-based return rides may not be available. Confirm the exact Everglades location and round-trip transport before booking.
Does a Miami boat cruise visit Biscayne National Park?
A skyline sightseeing cruise and a Biscayne National Park boat trip are different products. The National Park Service describes island, reef and snorkeling excursions; read each product’s route and departure point before assuming those are included.
Is Wynwood Walls free like the surrounding murals?
Treat the ticketed Wynwood Walls museum and exterior neighbourhood murals as separate choices. A walking tour may include one, both or neither; check its inclusions.
How do I get from MIA to South Beach or Downtown?
The MIA Mover reaches the Intermodal Center. Route 150 is the Miami Beach bus path; Metrorail suits Downtown and other mainland connections. Compare the final stop with your lodging address.
