The loop

One walk links Flinders Street Station, Federation Square, the laneways, the arcades and Chinatown, all inside the central grid. Every tier follows it; only what you pay for along the way changes.
- Start at Flinders Street Station and Federation Square at about 9am. Add Hosier Lane if you want the murals.
- Have coffee in Degraves Street and Centre Place, the lanes of tiny shops and hole-in-the-wall cafes.
- Walk up to Collins Street for the Block Arcade’s mosaic floor, then on to the Royal Arcade.
- Cross to Little Bourke Street for Chinatown and lunch.
- Walk east along Little Bourke Street to Spring Street, where the City Circle stops.
- Finish on the free City Circle, boarding at Spring Street or Parliament.
| Option | Our verdict |
|---|---|
| Laneways and arcades | Free: walk them yourself. Mid and splurge: a three-hour guided walk replaces your late morning. |
| Chinatown | The same on every tier: lunch on Little Bourke Street, with nothing to book. |
| Evening | Free and mid end on the City Circle. Splurge ends on a three-hour Yarra dinner cruise. |
Free
Nothing on the loop needs a ticket. The lanes, arcades and Chinatown cost nothing to walk, and the City Circle is a free tram, so the only spend is what you eat and drink.
- Walk Flinders Street Station, Federation Square and Hosier Lane first, at about 9am.
- Take coffee in Degraves Street or Centre Place, then the Block Arcade and Royal Arcade.
- Eat on Little Bourke Street, where Chinatown runs from Swanston Street to Spring Street.
- Ride the free City Circle from Spring Street for an orientation loop past Parliament and Docklands.
Good to know
- Inside the Free Tram Zone you do not touch on or off with myki.
- The City Circle’s W-class trams are not low-floor, so boarding involves steps.

Mid: about A$100 for a guided walk
One booking changes the day: a three-hour small-group walk with a local guide through the laneways and arcades. It includes a coffee and a pub drink or an alternative, and everything else stays free.
See or book the guided laneways walk
- Start at Flinders Street Station and Federation Square, with coffee in Degraves Street.
- Walk to Gordon Reserve on Spring Street, opposite the Hotel Windsor, for the morning departure.
- Follow the guide for three hours through the laneways and arcades; the walk finishes at a city bar.
- Eat on Little Bourke Street in Chinatown, then ride the free City Circle from Spring Street.
Good to know
- Groups hold up to 12 people, and the walk runs on morning and afternoon departures.
- The ticket price varies by date; the figure here is the lowest, and your date shows at booking.

On your own
Skip the walk if you only want the sights: the free loop covers the same streets.
With a guide
Book it for the Gold Rush stories and the pub stop, which the free loop cannot give you.
The mid-range day: about A$100 per person for the walk.

Splurge: about A$310 with a dinner cruise
Splurge keeps the guided walk and ends the day on the water: a three-hour dinner cruise on the Yarra, with dinner and a bar included. It is the priciest ticket on the page, so choose the evening carefully.
See or book the Yarra dinner cruise
- Follow the mid-range day through the walk and lunch in Chinatown.
- Rest or ride the free City Circle through the afternoon.
- Walk to Southgate on the Southbank Promenade for check-in at 7:15pm; the boat leaves at 7:30pm sharp.
- Sail for about three hours; the ticket includes dinner and a bar of beer, wine and spirits.
Good to know
- Book a Thursday to Sunday evening; those are the nights the cruise runs.
- A full refund needs three days’ notice, and minimum numbers apply, so a sailing can be cancelled.

The cruise is the splurge: one fixed three-hour sitting with dinner, drinks and the river at night.

If you are on a layover
SkyBus takes about 35 minutes from Terminal 4 to Southern Cross Station on its timetable, and a taxi to the centre is roughly 30 minutes. Count 45 minutes each way once you include the wait at the stop.
Good to know
- SkyBus runs daily from 4am to 1am, every 10 to 15 minutes, and not at all between 1am and 4am.
- A one-way adult SkyBus ticket is A$25.90, and SkyBus advises reaching the stop 5 to 10 minutes before departure.
- With under about five hours between landing and your next check-in, stop after the arcades and skip Chinatown and the tram.

Where a guided tour earns its money in one day
A guide earns the most in the laneways, where street names become Gold Rush stories and the pub stop is one you would walk past. The rest of the loop works alone. Compare Melbourne’s options below.
Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.
Questions people ask
Do I need a myki or a ticket to ride the City Circle?
No. Route 35 is free, and inside the Free Tram Zone you do not touch on or off with myki.
Is the guided walk worth it when I can walk the same lanes free?
Only for the stories. The lanes and arcades cost nothing on foot; the walk adds Gold Rush history, a coffee and a pub stop, so book it if you want that.
Which evenings does the dinner cruise sail?
Book a Thursday to Sunday evening. Check-in opens at 7:15pm and the boat leaves at 7:30pm sharp, without waiting for late guests.
Can I ride the City Circle with a pram or a wheelchair?
Not easily. Route 35 runs W-class heritage trams that are not low-floor, so boarding involves steps. Walk the loop instead.
What should I drop on a short layover?
Drop the guided walk and the cruise first. Both are fixed, multi-hour bookings, while the free loop bends to whatever time you have left after the SkyBus.
