The loop

One loop from Puerta del Sol covers the old core and the palace precinct on foot. Every tier follows it; only what you pay for at each stop changes.

  1. Start at Puerta del Sol: find the Kilometre 0 slab, the clock tower and the bear and strawberry tree statue.
  2. Walk Calle Mayor into Plaza Mayor, then on to Mercado de San Miguel, four minutes away.
  3. Continue west along Calle Mayor to Almudena Cathedral, which stands beside the Royal Palace.
  4. Circle the palace to Sabatini Gardens on its north side, then cross to the Plaza de Oriente gardens.
  5. Return along Calle del Arenal, which links Sol with the Teatro Real, to finish where you began.

Cathedral and gardensIdentical on every tier: free entry outside services, free gardens.

Free

The free day buys no ticket. The cathedral is free outside services, both gardens cost nothing, and San Miguel is the only place where your own snack budget decides the spend.

  1. Walk into Mercado de San Miguel for a look, and buy only what you want; any snack is your own spend.
  2. Enter Almudena Cathedral between services, since visits inside stop while Mass is held.
  3. Save Sabatini Gardens for late in the day: they face the palace’s north façade and are a named sunset spot.
  4. End in the Plaza de Oriente gardens, then take Calle del Arenal back to Sol.

Good to know

  • Mercado de San Miguel opens at 10am and closes at midnight from Sunday to Thursday, and at 1am on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves.
  • Sabatini Gardens can close in severe weather, the one thing that can break an otherwise free loop.

On your own

Every stop explains itself from the street; only the cathedral’s service pauses need planning.

Skip it here: nothing on this tier is ticketed, so a guide adds context, not access.

The free day: free, apart from what you eat.

Mid: about €35 for the palace

The mid tier pays for one thing: the Royal Palace interior. It turns the outdoor loop into a museum morning, and the palace’s hours set the order, so walk the loop in reverse.

  1. Book the palace for opening time, then walk Calle del Arenal from Sol to the Plaza de Oriente.
  2. Pass Sabatini Gardens on the way round to the palace, then allow about 45 minutes for the self-guided halls and leave large bags behind.
  3. Afterwards visit Almudena Cathedral next door, between services.
  4. Have lunch at Mercado de San Miguel, then Plaza Mayor and Calle Mayor back to Sol.

Good to know

  • On Sundays the palace closes at 4pm, and the last admission is an hour before closing.

Splurge: about €85 with a guided food walk

Splurge keeps the palace ticket and adds a guided food walk through the market district. Check the listing for what the tastings cover before you skip a proper lunch.

  1. Follow the mid tier’s morning: Calle del Arenal, the palace interior and the cathedral.
  2. Book the food walk for a slot after the palace, and confirm its meeting point on the listing.
  3. Use the walk in place of the mid tier’s self-guided lunch at Mercado de San Miguel.

Good to know

  • The market keeps late hours, so the food walk is the flexible part of the day; the palace’s closing time is the fixed part.

On your own

A self-guided lunch at San Miguel costs less and needs no booked slot.

With a guide

The walk is the splurge: it swaps choosing stalls for a guide’s route, and needs a booked slot.

Guided food walks in the market district

The splurge day: about €85 in the palace ticket and the food walk.

If you are on a layover

No airport link ends at Sol: the Metro reaches Nuevos Ministerios and the Exprés bus reaches Atocha and Cibeles. Add a change and a walk to these times, each way.

Good to know

  • The Exprés Aeropuerto bus runs around the clock, while Metro Line 8 stops for the night.
  • Under about six hours from landing, keep to the free tier and skip the palace.
  • Travel light: the palace visit advises against large backpacks and suitcases.

Where a guided tour earns its money in one day

The loop needs no guide for its free stops. A guide earns the most on the food stretch around the market, where a tasting route beats choosing stalls alone. Compare Madrid’s options below.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Can I go into Almudena Cathedral at any time?

Not during religious services: visits inside stop while they are held, so aim for a gap between them. Entry itself needs no ticket.

Can I visit the Royal Palace interior on a Sunday?

Yes, but it closes at 4pm on Sundays and takes its last admission an hour earlier, so plan it for the morning.

Can I see the Royal Palace without paying?

Yes, from outside. Sabatini Gardens face its north façade and the Plaza de Oriente gardens face it from the other side; only the halls need a ticket.

Which upgrade changes the day most?

The palace interior. Everything else on the loop is free or outdoors, so the halls are the one stop that adds something the free version cannot.

Is Mercado de San Miguel open late?

Yes. It closes at midnight from Sunday to Thursday and at 1am on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves, so it suits a late stop as well as lunch.

How much of a layover does this loop need?

Budget the airport link both ways plus a change to Sol. Under about six hours from landing, keep to the free loop.
