A free Sunday, in order
Sunday is the best free day in Madrid. The market, one museum window and the park line up from south to north, and the Prado’s window closes the day.
- Reach El Rastro when the street market opens at 9am on Ribera de Curtidores and browse until about noon; it closes at 3pm.
- Book the free Reina Sofía ticket online, arrive for the 12:30pm start and find Picasso’s Guernica before the window ends at 2:30pm.
- Spend the afternoon in Retiro, open until midnight from April to September and until 10pm from October to March.
- Finish at the Prado for its Sunday window, 5pm to 7pm. Free tickets depend on capacity, so join the line early.
Parks and viewpoints

Retiro, Campo del Moro and a palace-side viewpoint are free every day; Debod’s temple is free too, but its interior is timed. Weather can close any of them.
Good to know
- Retiro is open 6am to midnight from April to September and until 10pm from October. The city shuts its gates on a red weather alert.
- The Palacio de Cristal is closed for restoration; the tarpaulin covering it carries a free art installation, listed until 1 January 2027.
- Campo del Moro’s gardens open daily except 25 December and 1 January, closing at 6pm from October. The Mirador de la Cornisa, beside the Almudena, is a free viewpoint over them.
- Debod’s interior is free, Tuesday to Sunday until 8pm. Reserve: slots open on the 15th of the previous month, and entry without one is not guaranteed.
Almudena, the guard change, El Rastro and Goya
A cathedral, a ceremony, a Sunday market and Goya’s own chapel cost nothing. Each has a rule that decides when to go.
Good to know
- Almudena Cathedral opens 10am to 8:30pm daily from September to June and asks a small donation; visits pause during services.
- Changing of the Guard: outside the Puerta del Príncipe on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The larger monthly ceremony is usually the first Wednesday, except January, August and September; weather can cancel both.
- El Rastro’s street market runs Sundays and public holidays, 9am to 3pm, around Ribera de Curtidores; walking the stalls costs nothing.
- San Antonio de la Florida holds Goya’s frescoes and tomb. It is free, Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30am to 8pm, closed Mondays, and reopened in June after conservation work.
Museums with free hours
Five state-run sites open free at set hours, but the windows differ in who may use them. The Reina Sofía lists its 7pm start among its busiest times.
Good to know
- All five close on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December; the Reina Sofía also closes Tuesdays and the Archaeological Museum Mondays.
- The Prado admits no one in the last 30 minutes and clears its galleries 10 minutes early, so its free window is shorter than it looks.
- 12 October, Spain’s national holiday, is free at the Royal Palace, Reina Sofía, Thyssen and Archaeological Museum.
| Free window | Who and how | |
|---|---|---|
| Prado | Mon–Sat 6–8pm; Sun and holidays 5–7pm | Everyone; free tickets in person, subject to capacity |
| Reina Sofía | Mon, Wed–Sat 7–9pm; Sun 12:30–2:30pm | Everyone, individuals only; free ticket, bookable online |
| Thyssen-Bornemisza | Mon noon–4pm; Sat 9–11pm | Everyone; Monday covers the Collection, Saturday the temporary shows |
| Royal Palace | Mon–Thu 5–7pm; 4–6pm from October | EU and Latin American citizens, EU residents; ID, self-guided, in person |
| Archaeological Museum | Sat from 2pm; Sun mornings | Everyone |
Nearly free, and worth it
A free day still needs a few euros. Budget for the Metro between stops, a donation at Almudena, and two small entries: a glass-lift viewpoint and a national museum.
Good to know
- Metro single fares are set by stations travelled, so a short hop between free stops costs least.
- Faro de Moncloa’s glass lift reaches a 92-metre deck; tickets are timed, visits last 30 minutes, and it is closed on Mondays.
| Item | € per adult | US$ |
|---|---|---|
| Metro single ticket, up to 6 stations | €1.20 | ≈ US$1 |
| Metro single ticket, 10 stations or more | €1.60 | ≈ US$2 |
| Almudena Cathedral, donation asked | €1 | ≈ US$1 |
| Archaeological Museum, general entry | €3 | ≈ US$3 |
| Faro de Moncloa observation deck | €4 | ≈ US$4 |
Free versus paid: our verdicts
Three calls come up on every budget trip. The free version is often enough; in one case it excludes most visitors.
| Option | Our verdict |
|---|---|
| The Prado’s free last two hours, versus a guided Prado and Reina Sofía morning | Free hours show the highlights at closing pace. Pay for a guide when context matters; that tour starts as doors open. |
| The Royal Palace’s free window, versus a booked ticket | The window only works for EU and Latin American citizens and EU residents, unguided, in person. Most other visitors should book. |
| The Reina Sofía’s free evening, versus a daytime visit | Free evenings start at 7pm, which the museum lists among its busiest times; between 2pm and 6pm is quieter but paid. |
When paying is worth it: about €35
Pay for the Royal Palace unless you hold an EU or Latin American passport, or EU residency, and can go on a Monday to Thursday afternoon.
Pay for a guide at the Prado when you want the collection at doors-open pace, not the closing-hour rush.
