How to choose

Five trips leave Madrid on one train, bus or coach seat. Four are World Heritage cities, from walled Ávila to Cervantes’s university town of Alcalá; the fifth is Philip II’s monastery at El Escorial.

Good to know

  • Left off: Aranjuez, Cuenca and Salamanca. Each needs a longer day or a particular season to earn the journey, so they suit a second visit.

Toledo: the walled hill city, from €6.55

Toledo packs an Alcázar, a cathedral, synagogues and the El Greco museum into one hilltop old town above the Tagus. The fast train is quickest, and coaches leave about every half hour.

  1. Take an Avant from Madrid Atocha, about 30 minutes, or an Alsa coach from Plaza Elíptica, 50 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.
  2. The train station lies across the river. Walk about 20 minutes on the escalators, or ride city bus 5, 511, 61 or 62 to Plaza de Zocodover.
  3. Walk from Zocodover to the cathedral, the Alcázar and San Juan de los Reyes; the streets are narrow and steep.
  4. Finish at the Mirador del Valle, across the Tagus, for the classic view of the whole hill.

Good to know

  • Toledo’s city buses take cash only, and drivers refuse notes above €5, so keep coins for the ride up.

On your own

Easy: train or coach, then walk. Only the climb from the station is hard.

With a guide

A coach day adds a guided walk and transport; some options include monument entry.

The coach alone costs from €6.55 each way; a guided coach day with a walking tour starts from ≈ US$50.

Segovia: aqueduct and Alcázar

Segovia’s Roman aqueduct crosses the town on 167 arches built without mortar, with the cathedral and the Alcázar further up the old town. Fast trains are quick, but they stop at a station 6 km out.

  1. Take an Avant from Madrid Chamartín or Atocha to Segovia-Guiomar, about 30 minutes.
  2. From Guiomar, ride city bus 11 to the aqueduct or bus 12 to the centre, about 15 minutes.
  3. Walk from the aqueduct up to the cathedral and the Alcázar; the Alcázar tower has 152 steps.

Good to know

  • The coach from Madrid’s Moncloa interchange ends at Segovia bus station, a few minutes on foot from the centre.

Ávila: the walls

Ávila is the walled city: a wall over 2,500 metres long with 87 towers and nine gates, walkable along the top. It is the farthest trip here, so it suits an early start.

  1. Take a coach from Madrid’s Estación Sur (Méndez Álvaro), from 1 hour 20 minutes, or a train from Chamartín.
  2. Both stations lie about 1.5 km from the walls: walk, or ride city bus 1 or 4 from the station.
  3. Walk the wall top from the Puerta del Alcázar, then the old town inside it.

Good to know

  • Until 25 October the wall walk opens daily, 10am to 8pm, with last entry 45 minutes before closing. From 25 October it closes at 6pm and on Mondays.

El Escorial: the royal monastery, from €3

Philip II’s 16th-century complex joins a monastery, a palace, a basilica, a royal tomb and a library, 56 km from Madrid. Bus 664 stops about 200 metres from the monastery.

  1. Take bus 664, or 661, from Madrid’s Moncloa interchange, about 1 hour; or Cercanías C-8 from Atocha, also about 1 hour.
  2. By train, the station is over 1 km from town: walk uphill or take a local bus.
  3. Plan the visit for Tuesday to Sunday and hold the ticket first; the monastery admits only visitors who already have one.
  4. Add the Silla de Felipe II viewpoint in the Bosque de la Herrería for the view back to the monastery.

Good to know

  • The monastery opens 10am to 7pm until September and 10am to 6pm from October. The basilica needs no ticket but closes during services.

Alcalá de Henares, from €3

Alcalá de Henares is Cervantes’s birthplace and an old university town, 36 km from Madrid. Its arcaded Calle Mayor and Plaza de Cervantes make the easiest half day on this page.

  1. Take Cercanías C-2 or C-7 from Atocha or Chamartín. Or take bus 223 from Avenida de América to Alcalá bus station, ten minutes on foot from the centre.
  2. Walk Calle Mayor to Plaza de Cervantes and the Cervantes Birthplace Museum at number 48.
  3. The museum is free: open Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 6pm, and weekends and holidays, 10am to 7pm.
  4. End at the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso, then stay for the tapas.

If you only do one

Toledo, if there is time for only one: the shortest ride to a full medieval old town, with sights for a whole day. For a wall you can walk, pick Ávila; for a royal palace, El Escorial.

Good to know

  • Want two cities in a day: one coach tour joins Ávila and Segovia, so there is no second station to plan.
  • Short on time: Alcalá de Henares is the cheapest half day, and its museum is free.

Where a guided day tour earns its money, and where it does not

A guide earns its keep where the day needs a plan: Toledo’s steep hill, Ávila and Segovia on one coach, and El Escorial’s entry rules. Alcalá is easy alone; only its short local walking tour is worth adding.

Questions people ask

Is the train or the coach better for Toledo?

The train is faster, about half an hour against 50 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, but its station sits across the river. Coaches leave about every half hour from Plaza Elíptica.

Which day trip works on a Monday?

Not El Escorial, whose monastery closes on Mondays. Until 25 October the Ávila walls stay open daily, and Alcalá’s Cervantes museum opens Tuesday to Sunday.

Can I see Segovia and Ávila in one day?

Yes, on a coach tour that pairs them. By public transport the two cities are about an hour apart by coach, so it needs an early start.

How do I get from Segovia’s train station to the aqueduct?

City bus 11 runs from Segovia-Guiomar station to the aqueduct, and bus 12 to the centre, about 15 minutes.

Do I need a ticket for the Monastery of El Escorial?

Yes: entry needs a ticket held before you go in, and the guided coach tours include it.
