The loop

One loop covers every budget: Griffith Observatory’s free grounds and telescope, then the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Metro’s B Line and a park shuttle bus link them without a car.

  1. Ride Metro’s B Line to Vermont/Sunset, then the DASH Observatory/Los Feliz bus to Griffith Observatory. Grounds open at 5 in the morning, the building at noon.
  2. Walk the free grounds, telescopes and terraces. A planetarium show ticket, sold only in person on arrival, is the one optional add.
  3. Ride the DASH bus back to Vermont/Sunset, then the B Line a few stops to Hollywood/Vine or Hollywood/Highland.
  4. Walk the Hollywood Walk of Fame’s stars along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street. The sidewalk carries no ticket at any tier.
  5. Book a guided Griffith Observatory tour before you fly if you want the splurge tier’s planetarium ticket already reserved.

Griffith Observatory

Free: grounds, telescopes and views at every tier. Mid adds the planetarium ticket. Splurge swaps in a guided Insider Tour, ticket included.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Free, mid or splurge: the sidewalk stars carry no ticket at any tier.

Free

Griffith Observatory’s grounds, telescopes and terraces cost nothing at any tier, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame has never sold a ticket. The DASH bus and Metro’s B Line link them for the cost of two short rides.

  1. Take Metro’s B Line to Vermont/Sunset, then the DASH Observatory/Los Feliz bus to the Observatory.
  2. Look through the free public telescope and walk the terraces for the Hollywood Sign and skyline views.
  3. Ride back to Vermont/Sunset and the B Line to Hollywood/Vine or Hollywood/Highland.
  4. Walk the Walk of Fame’s stars along Hollywood Boulevard. Nothing here ever needs a ticket.

On your own

The free loop needs no plan beyond the two rides. Both stops read from their own signage.

With a guide

Not needed here: nothing on the free loop is complex enough to need one.

The free day: free, plus the DASH bus and Metro fares.

Mid: US$12 for the planetarium show

One ticket changes the day: the planetarium show at Griffith Observatory, sold only in person, the same day. The Walk of Fame and the rest of the loop stay free.

  1. Ride the loop’s free stretch first: Griffith Observatory’s grounds, telescope and the walk to Hollywood.
  2. Arrive at Griffith Observatory in time to buy that day’s planetarium ticket in person. There is no online or advance purchase.
  3. Watch the live-narrated planetarium show, then continue the loop to the Walk of Fame.

On your own

Buy the planetarium ticket in person on arrival. Every other stop on the loop needs no plan.

With a guide

Not needed for this ticket: Griffith sells no guided add-on to the show. Try the splurge tier’s guided tour instead.

The mid-range day: US$12 per person, paid in person, same-day only.

Splurge: about US$60, guide included

The Griffith Observatory Insider Tour trades a self-guided visit for a guide who works at the Observatory, with the planetarium ticket already bundled in. The Walk of Fame stays free afterward.

  1. Book the Griffith Observatory Insider Tour for a morning or evening slot before you fly.
  2. Follow an Observatory guide through the telescopes, exhibits and the bundled planetarium show.
  3. Ride the DASH bus and Metro’s B Line to Hollywood afterward. The Walk of Fame needs no guide.

On your own

The free grounds and a same-day planetarium ticket already cover most of what the tour explains. Skip it and keep the saving.

With a guide

The one splurge that changes the day: a guide explains telescopes and exhibits a self-guided visit only reads from a wall panel.

If you are on a layover

LAX has no direct rail to Griffith Park or Hollywood: Metro’s C and K Lines serve the LAX/Metro Transit Center but need further transfers to reach the B Line. A taxi or rideshare from the terminal curb is the practical way in.

Good to know

  • Allow real time for Los Angeles freeway traffic in both directions. This loop is not realistic on a layover under about four hours, door to door.
  • Griffith Observatory’s building closes Mondays. The grounds, telescopes and terraces stay open daily.
  • The planetarium show sells same-day only, cash or card, in person at the Observatory.
  • LAX’s own ground-transportation page lists every taxi, rideshare and shuttle pickup point by terminal.

Where a guided tour earns its money in one day

Paying for a person, not a bigger ticket, is what changes this loop: an Observatory guide adds context a wall panel does not, and the planetarium ticket comes bundled in. The Walk of Fame explains itself for free.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Do I need a car for this loop?

No. Metro’s B Line and the DASH Observatory bus connect Griffith Observatory to Hollywood/Vine and Hollywood/Highland, though most other Los Angeles districts still need a car or rideshare.

Can I buy the planetarium show ticket in advance?

No. Griffith Observatory sells every planetarium ticket same-day, in person, at the Observatory itself, with no online or phone purchase.

Is Griffith Observatory ever closed?

The building closes on Mondays, but the grounds, terraces and telescopes stay open daily from 5 in the morning to 10:30 at night.

Does the Hollywood Walk of Fame ever charge admission?

No, at any tier. The sidewalk stars along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street have never sold a ticket.

Is this loop realistic on an LAX layover?

Only with real time budgeted. LAX has no direct rail to this loop, so a taxi or rideshare and Los Angeles freeway traffic both cut into a short layover.
