Is the Tower of London worth visiting?

Yes. Nearly a thousand years of English royal history sit inside these walls -- a working fortress, palace, prison and treasury in turn -- and the Crown Jewels are still the working regalia used in state ceremonies today.

The real decision is not whether to go. It is whether the standard ticket already covers what you want, or the private Beefeater meet-and-greet is worth the extra cost.

What you will see

The site divides into three highlights most first-time visitors build a plan around.

Good to know

  • Crown Jewels: 23,578 gemstones and the working royal regalia, on display since 1661, moved past on a slow travelator
  • White Tower: the Norman keep itself, with the Royal Armouries collection and Henry VIII’s armour
  • Yeomen Warders and ravens: the free 45-minute Warder tour, plus the Tower’s resident ravens and the execution site at Tower Green

Which ticket suits your visit?

Most first-time visitors do well on the standard ticket alone. It already includes the free Yeoman Warder tour, so you are not paying extra just for a guide.

Choose the Beefeater guided tour if a private meet-and-greet matters to you. It also suits visitors who want a fixed itinerary rather than exploring at their own pace.

How much time you need

Plan 90 minutes for the Crown Jewels, White Tower and Ravens alone. Up to 2 hours adds a Yeoman Warder tour and the Medieval Palace, and up to 3 hours covers the Bloody Tower and Battlements too.

When to go, and how long the queue is

The Tower is generally quieter in the afternoon, after 13:00, with the peak season running Easter through October.

Book online in advance: visitor numbers are limited and popular dates and timeslots sell out ahead of the day.

Getting there

Tower Hill (Circle and District lines) is a 5-minute walk. Tower Pier, right at the Tower’s entrance, is served by river boats from Westminster and the London Eye -- a natural next stop if you are continuing by river.

What to know before booking

Book online for priority entry and to avoid missing out on your date. The Tower does not publish a fixed weeks-ahead rule, but summer and school-holiday dates go first.

Good to know

  • Both reviewed tickets can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead
  • The standard ticket already includes the free Yeoman Warder tour
  • Historic building: expect stairs and uneven surfaces in parts, with limited step-free routes

What to see next

Tower Bridge sits right next to the Tower, and St Katharine Docks is a short walk beyond it. Tower Pier, at the Tower’s entrance, is also where a Thames sightseeing cruise toward Westminster departs.

Questions people ask

How much are Tower of London tickets?

All-day standard entry: From £37.00. Guided tour with a Beefeater meet and greet: From £79.04. Both prices are per person.

Does the standard ticket already include a guided tour?

Yes. Every standard ticket includes a free 45-minute Yeoman Warder tour, departing every 30 minutes from the entrance. The paid guided tour adds a private Beefeater meet-and-greet on top of that.

Can I cancel or get a refund?

Yes -- both the standard ticket and the guided Beefeater tour can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before your visit.

How long does a Tower of London visit take?

Plan 90 minutes for the highlights: the Crown Jewels, White Tower and Ravens. Up to 2 hours adds a Yeoman Warder tour and the Medieval Palace, and up to 3 hours adds the Bloody Tower and Battlements.

Which station is best for the Tower of London?

Tower Hill, on the Circle and District lines, is a 5-minute walk. Tower Pier, right at the entrance, also connects by river boat to Westminster and the London Eye.

Is the Tower of London wheelchair accessible?

Partly. The Crown Jewels has level access with a slow-moving travelator, and a free wheelchair loan is available. The Battlements, Bloody Tower and some upper floors have no lift access, since it is a working medieval fortress.
