Three days: the default plan

Three days covers Westminster, the Tower and Bloomsbury without crossing the river twice. Book Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London’s Crown Jewels ahead; the British Museum only needs a free timed slot.

  1. Day 1: Westminster and the South Bank — the Abbey, St James’s Park, Buckingham Palace, then the London Eye.
  2. Day 2: the Tower and the City — the Tower, Tower Bridge, Borough Market, then St Paul’s.
  3. Day 3: Bloomsbury and the West End — the Museum’s free galleries, Covent Garden, then a show.
  4. Book ahead: Westminster Abbey’s entry ticket, the Tower’s Crown Jewels exhibition, and a free British Museum timeslot. Check the Guard’s calendar the day before.
  5. Day order: keep day one off a Sunday, since Westminster Abbey sells no sightseeing tickets that day.

Day 1: Westminster, about £35 in tickets

Day one loops Westminster, then crosses once to the South Bank. Westminster Abbey is the paying anchor, sold Monday to Saturday only. The free version is Big Ben, Parliament, St James’s Park and the Guard, then the river view.

  1. Morning: be at the Abbey for its 9:30 weekday opening (9:00 on Saturday; book ahead, no Sunday sightseeing), then see Parliament and Big Ben from outside.
  2. Walk through St James’s Park to Buckingham Palace; check the Guard’s calendar the day before, since it doesn’t change daily.
  3. Cross Westminster Bridge to the South Bank, then follow the path to the London Eye and Southbank Centre.
  4. Evening: stay along the river, or head back into Westminster for dinner.

Good to know

  • Westminster Abbey’s standard admission is £31 for an adult; last entry is 3:30pm on weekdays and 3pm on Saturday, and Sundays are for services only.

Day two moves east to the Tower, then follows the river to St Paul’s — book the Tower’s Crown Jewels exhibition ahead.

The free version is Tower Bridge’s walkways, Borough Market, and the view of St Paul’s dome from the Millennium Bridge.

  1. Morning: be at the Tower for opening (last entry 16:30); see the Crown Jewels and a Yeoman Warder tour, both included.
  2. Walk onto Tower Bridge’s public roadway, free to cross, then follow the south bank path to Borough Market for lunch.
  3. Continue to the Millennium Bridge for the view up at St Paul’s; sightseeing tickets are Monday to Saturday only.
  4. Evening: head back into the City or south of the river for dinner.

Good to know

Day 3: Bloomsbury and the West End

Day three centers on one free museum and one paid evening. The British Museum needs no ticket — free since 1753 — but a pre-booked slot avoids the queue at busy times.

The free plan is the Museum and Covent Garden; the paid choice is a West End show, booked ahead or decided on the night.

  1. Morning: arrive by the Great Russell Street entrance for 10:00 opening (Fridays to 20:30) with a pre-booked free slot. See two or three galleries, not the whole collection.
  2. Afternoon: walk south through Bloomsbury to Covent Garden’s piazza; Theatreland (Shaftesbury Avenue, Covent Garden, Leicester Square) is within walking distance.
  3. Evening: choose a West End show; book ahead for a named production, or decide once you are there.

Good to know

  • The British Museum is free daily 10am-5pm, with Friday hours to 8:30pm; it is closed 24-26 December.
  • Book a free entry timeslot in advance; queues are expected at busier times without one.
  • A keyword search for a West End show surfaced non-theatre tours first, so this page does not shelve a West End term.

On your own

The Museum needs just the free timeslot; book a West End seat directly with the show once chosen.

British Museum guided tours

If you have two days

With two days, keep day one as written: Westminster and the South Bank. Merge days two and three: the Tower in the morning, a shorter Museum visit in the afternoon, no West End evening.

  1. Day 1: as written — Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and the South Bank.
  2. Day 2, morning: the Tower of London at opening, then Tower Bridge; skip the walk on to St Paul’s.
  3. Day 2, afternoon: the Tube or a bus to the British Museum for two or three galleries, not the whole visit.
  4. Drop the Borough Market stop and the West End evening; there is not room for both on top of the Tower.
  5. The Tower’s Crown Jewels queue is the fixed point of day two; everything else flexes around it.

A fourth day: about £25 in tickets

The fourth day is a list, not a route. Greenwich is a half-day trip on its own, not an add-on to a crowded central-London day.

Good to know

  • By DLR: Cutty Sark station is about a 7-minute walk from the Maritime Museum, then further uphill to the Observatory.
  • By river: Uber Boat by Thames Clippers runs about every 20 minutes, 20 minutes from Tower Pier or 25 from London Bridge Pier.
  • The Observatory is open 10am-5pm (later in September); its Planetarium is closed for renovation.
  • The National Maritime Museum, next to the Observatory, is free and needs no booking, though a free ticket in advance guarantees an entry time.

Where a guided tour earns its money, and where it does not

A guide earns its place for a story or priority entry: Crown Jewels, a Museum route through fifty-plus galleries, or the Abbey’s history in one telling. Skip it for the free sights: Big Ben, St James’s Park, Tower Bridge’s walkways and free galleries.

Questions people ask

Do I need to book Westminster Abbey ahead?

Book in advance for a guaranteed timeslot; it sells no sightseeing tickets on Sundays.

Is the British Museum really free?

Yes. General entry has been free since 1753; book a timeslot online to avoid the queue at busy times.

Which day should I avoid for Westminster Abbey?

Sunday. The Abbey is used for services only that day, with no sightseeing entry.

Does the Changing the Guard happen every day?

No. It runs on a published rota, so check the Household Division’s calendar before planning a day around it.

Can I do the Tower of London and St Paul’s on the same day?

Yes, on the three-day plan. On two days, skip St Paul’s and keep the Tower as the fixed point.

How do I pay for the Tube and buses?

Tap a contactless bank card, phone or Oyster card at the reader. Peak fares apply on weekday rush hours, and a daily cap limits what one day of travel costs.
