How to choose

Under an hour reaches four of these on a single fast train. Stonehenge needs a connecting bus or a guide, since it has no station of its own.

Windsor & Eton: about £35 (35 minutes by train)

Windsor Castle sits a short walk from two stations, with the town and Eton’s footbridge across the Thames both walkable afterwards.

  1. Take a GWR train from London Paddington to Windsor & Eton Central; the fastest services take 35 minutes.
  2. Book Windsor Castle admission online in advance to save four pounds off the on-the-day price.
  3. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours inside; the route is long and uphill.
  4. Walk the footbridge across the Thames to Eton and its High Street afterwards.

Good to know

  • St George’s Chapel closes to visitors at 16:00 and is shut on Sundays.
  • As a working palace, the Castle can close parts at short notice.

Cambridge: £15.75 for the Chapel, by train from King’s Cross

Cambridge earns a day for King’s College Chapel and a punt on the Cam.

  1. Take a Great Northern train from London King’s Cross and check the live departure board for the fastest service.
  2. Book King’s College Chapel online before you leave; the ‘Early Bird’ price ends every Sunday night.
  3. Walk from the station into the historic centre, or take a taxi.
  4. Hire a punt, or join a chauffeured one, along the Backs after the Chapel.

Good to know

  • Chapel opening hours and last entry change by day; check the College’s own visiting calendar first.

Canterbury (54 minutes by high-speed train)

Canterbury Cathedral sits at the centre of a small, walkable medieval city, so the day is short on transit and long on one landmark.

  1. Take a Southeastern high-speed train from London St Pancras; the fastest trains reach Canterbury West in 54 minutes.
  2. On a Sunday, plan to arrive after 12:30, when the Cathedral church itself opens; the grounds and shop open from 11:30.
  3. Walk the short distance from Canterbury West station into the walled city and the Cathedral precincts.

Good to know

  • Last admission is 16:00 every day; hours can shorten for services or events.

On your own

The cathedral and the old city are both walkable from the station in an afternoon; no guide needed.

With a guide

Worth it to add Dover’s white cliffs or Leeds Castle; verified coach day trips bundle Canterbury with both.

Canterbury tours from London

Brighton (around an hour by train)

Brighton is a seafront day: a Victorian pier, a pebble beach and the lanes of independent shops. The day needs no ticket booked in advance.

  1. Take a Southern train from London Victoria or London Bridge; Southern puts the journey at around an hour.
  2. Walk down to the seafront and Brighton Palace Pier from the station.
  3. Budget one pound a person for the Pier itself between March and October; it is free the rest of the year.

On your own

The whole day, seafront to lanes, needs no advance ticket beyond a train fare.

With a guide

Worth it for the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs beyond Brighton, which need a car or a coach; verified day trips cover both.

Oxford: £25 for Christ Church (1 hour by train)

Oxford’s colleges, not a single museum, are the reason to go. Christ Church combines a working college, a cathedral and a dining hall in one ticket.

  1. Take a GWR train from London Paddington, direct or with one change, reaching Oxford in about an hour.
  2. Book a Christ Church multimedia-tour ticket online; new tickets release every Friday at about 10am for the week ahead.
  3. Walk the historic centre on foot; the colleges sit close enough together for one day.

Good to know

  • Booking online saves two pounds a ticket over paying at the Visitor Centre on the day.

Bath: £30 for the Roman Baths (1 hour 20 minutes by train)

Bath earns the longest single-city train ride on this page for one reason: the Roman Baths, open almost every day of the year.

  1. Take a GWR train from London Paddington, direct or with one change, to Bath Spa in about 1 hour 20 minutes.
  2. Book Roman Baths tickets online in advance to save two pounds over the on-the-day price.
  3. Walk the short distance from Bath Spa station into the Georgian centre around the Baths and the Abbey.

Good to know

  • The Roman Baths are open daily 9am to 6pm through October, with last admission at 5pm.

On your own

A single long train ride and a walkable centre; the only ticket to book is the Baths.

With a guide

Stonehenge (about 2 hours, train plus bus)

Stonehenge stone circle, Wiltshire

Stonehenge is the one trip here with no station of its own. Reaching it independently means a train to Salisbury and then a connecting bus.

  1. Take a South Western Railway train from London Waterloo to Salisbury, about 1 hour 25 minutes, running roughly every half hour.
  2. From Salisbury station, board the Stonehenge Tour bus at stop SC; it runs generally hourly and takes about 35 minutes.
  3. Book Stonehenge admission online the day before your visit for the online discount; same-day tickets cost full price.

On your own

Workable but the longest door-to-door trip here, with one change of transport at Salisbury.

With a guide

The easier choice for most visitors: one coach handles the whole loop, paired with Windsor and Bath; verified day trips cover it.

Stonehenge tours from London

If you only do one

Windsor. It pairs a royal landmark with a walkable town and Eton across the river, and nothing beyond the Castle ticket needs booking.

Good to know

  • History and a university city instead: Cambridge, for the Chapel and a punt on the Cam.
  • A whole ancient site instead: Stonehenge, but only with the tour bus, a taxi, or a guided coach.
  • The seafront instead: Brighton, the only trip here needing no ticket booked ahead.

Where a guided day tour earns its money, and where it does not

A guide earns its money on Stonehenge and on any day combining two or three of these places in one coach, such as Windsor with Bath or Oxford with the Cotswolds. It is not worth paying for the other trips, each a train ride and a walk.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Do I need to book Windsor Castle tickets in advance?

Not to get in, but booking online saves four pounds over the on-the-day price. The Castle can also close parts of itself at short notice as a working palace, so check before you travel.

Can I reach Stonehenge by train alone?

Not directly. Take the train to Salisbury, then the Stonehenge Tour bus, a taxi, or cycle the last leg; most visitors choose a guided coach instead to skip the change.

Which day trip needs no ticket booked ahead?

Brighton. The seafront, the pier and the lanes need only a train fare; the Pier itself charges a small seasonal fee between March and October.

Can I do Oxford and Cambridge in one day?

Not comfortably by train on your own in a single day. A guided day trip from London that visits both exists and is the practical way to combine them.

Is Canterbury Cathedral open on Sundays?

The grounds and shop open at 11:30, but the Cathedral church itself does not open to visitors until 12:30 on Sundays.
