The loop

Walk the loop clockwise from Rossio, so the one big climb comes first and the rest runs downhill or flat until a short push to Chiado. Every tier follows it; only the tickets change.

  1. Start at Rossio and cross flat Praça da Figueira, then take Rua da Madalena to Largo das Caldas, where the castle’s own directions use a lift.
  2. The castle gate is about 13 minutes by street from Praça da Figueira. The castle itself quotes 11 minutes from the Rossio Metro station, using the lift.
  3. Go down to Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Largo das Portas do Sol, then follow Alfama’s lanes to the Sé, about six minutes each.
  4. Cross Praça do Comércio, walk through the Rua Augusta Arch and up flat Rua Augusta back to Rossio.
  5. Finish with the short, steep climb from Rossio to Largo do Carmo in Chiado.

Good to know

  • Lisbon is hilly. An elevation model puts Rossio near 15 metres, the castle gate near 80 and Largo do Carmo near 50.
  • Carris lists the Glória and Lavra funiculars as out of service and the Santa Justa Lift as temporarily closed, so this loop climbs without them.
  • Tram 28 stops at Santa Luzia, the Sé and Chiado. Carris has shortened the line before, so treat it as a bonus, not the plan.

The free day needs no ticket. You see the castle from outside, Alfama’s lanes, the Sé façade, the Arch and Chiado; your only spend is what you eat.

  1. Reach the castle hill early and stay outside, looking up at the walls and towers from the street.
  2. Spend your longest stop at Miradouro de Santa Luzia, a viewpoint with a garden, a pond and tile panels.
  3. Walk down through Alfama to Largo da Sé and look at the cathedral’s façade from the square.
  4. Cross Praça do Comércio, walk through the Arch and go up Rua Augusta to Rossio.

Good to know

  • The Sé takes tourist visits Monday to Saturday and closes to them on Sundays and holy days. The Carmo Archaeological Museum also closes on Sundays.
  • The free day stays outdoors, so a Sunday changes nothing; the mid tier’s castle is open every day.

Mid: about €45 for the castle and a fado show

The mid tier books the two things that need a slot: the São Jorge Castle interior at opening time and a fado show in the evening. The castle sets the order, so you climb first.

  1. Book the castle for 9am, when it opens, and take the lift route from Largo das Caldas so you arrive with legs to spare.
  2. Come down through Santa Luzia and Alfama for lunch, then finish the loop through the Sé, the Arch and Rua Augusta.
  3. Book a fado show for the evening, after the loop, and pick a start time on the listing.

Good to know

  • The castle is open seven days a week, so it is the one interior that survives a Sunday.
  • Mubboo’s Lisbon search shows no bare tickets for the Arch terrace, the Sé or the Carmo museum. This tier prices only the castle and the show.

On your own

Book the castle for opening time and keep the afternoon loose; nothing else on the loop needs a slot.

With a guide

Not needed at the castle; keep the guide budget for the food walk on the splurge tier.

Fado shows in Lisbon

The mid-range day: about €45 in tickets.

Prices checked 19 Sep 2026 · per person, tickets and transport, excluding accommodation

Splurge: about €150 with a guided food walk

Splurge keeps the castle and the fado show and swaps the self-guided Alfama lunch for a guided food walk. Check the listing for what the tastings cover before you skip a proper meal.

  1. Follow the mid tier’s morning: the castle at opening time, then Santa Luzia.
  2. Book a food-walk slot that starts after the castle, and confirm its meeting point on the listing.
  3. Let the walk replace lunch, then finish the loop downhill through the Sé, the Arch and Rua Augusta.
  4. Keep the fado show for the evening.

On your own

A self-guided lunch in Alfama costs less and keeps the pace yours; you choose where to eat.

With a guide

The walk is the splurge: guided tastings and stories in place of guessing which door to try.

Guided food walks in Alfama

The splurge day: about €150 in castle, food-walk and fado tickets.

If you are on a layover

The airport has its own Metro station on the Red Line, and its operator puts downtown about 20 minutes away. Rossio sits on the Green Line, so add a change at Alameda to that time.

Good to know

  • Metro trains run from 6:30am to 1am every day, and Red Line trains come roughly every 6 to 10 minutes.
  • The airport quotes €10 to €15 for a taxi or ride-hailing trip to the centre, luggage fees included.
  • The Metro needs a rechargeable card, which costs €0.50.
  • With only a few hours between landing and take-off, keep to the flat half of the loop: Rossio, Rua Augusta and the Arch.

Where a guided tour earns its money in one day

The free stops need no guide. A guide earns the most in Alfama, where a food walk turns a maze of lanes into a tasting route. Compare Lisbon’s options below.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Can I still ride the Santa Justa Lift or the Glória funicular?

Carris lists the Glória and Lavra funiculars as out of service and the Santa Justa Lift as temporarily closed, so this plan climbs on foot or by the lift on the castle’s route. Status can change, but nothing here depends on them.

Is Tram 28 worth riding on this loop?

It stops at Santa Luzia, the Sé and Chiado, so it can replace a climb. Carris has shortened the line before, and a ticket bought on board costs more than a card fare, so the plan does not lean on it.

What changes on a Sunday?

The Sé and the Carmo Archaeological Museum are closed to visitors, while the castle is open seven days a week. The free loop is unchanged, because its stops are outdoors.

Can I book the Arch terrace, the Sé or the Carmo museum here?

Not as separate tickets: Mubboo’s Lisbon search shows none, so this plan prices only the castle, a fado show and a food walk. You can still walk through the Arch and see the Sé façade from outside, and some guided Alfama walks include cathedral entry.

How long does the walking take?

About 50 minutes for the whole loop by street, before the castle, lunch and viewpoints. The last climb to Chiado is short but steep.
