Three days: the default plan

Group Lisbon by hill, not by list: Alfama and the castle, then Belém by the river, then Baixa, Chiado and Bairro Alto. Weekly closures set the order.

  1. Day 1: tram 28 uphill to the Sé and Alfama’s viewpoints, the castle, then a walk down to the river.
  2. Day 2: tram 15E to Belém for the monastery and the Tower, with MAAT as an optional third stop.
  3. Day 3: Baixa’s grid, Chiado, then a Bairro Alto evening.
  4. Before you fly: book the Belém tickets, the one part of the plan that can sell out.
  5. The day before: load Carris/Metro tickets on a navegante occasional card.
  6. Day order: Belém takes Wednesday to Sunday; Alfama and Baixa work on any day, Monday included.

Day 1: Alfama, the Sé and São Jorge Castle, about €40

Alfama climbs one hillside, so day one goes up once and comes down on foot. Ride tram 28 to the Sé, follow the viewpoints to the castle, then wander downhill to the river.

  1. Board tram 28 on Rua da Conceição in Baixa, towards Graça, and ride to the Sé, the cathedral dating from 1147.
  2. Ride or walk on to the Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol, both stops on the line.
  3. Enter São Jorge Castle from 9am; last entry is half an hour before closing.
  4. Leave by the lanes down through Alfama to the river; nothing on the way needs a ticket.

Good to know

  • The castle is shut only on 1 January, 1 May, and 24, 25 and 31 December.
  • A tram ticket bought on board costs €3.30; a Carris/Metro ticket loaded on a navegante occasional card costs €1.90 for 60 minutes.
  • The card costs €0.50 once and takes tickets for all three days.

Belém lies downriver from the centre, so it gets its own day and its own booking. Tram 15E runs there from Baixa, and the monastery and MAAT sit on the same line.

  1. Ride tram 15E from Praça da Figueira or Praça do Comércio to the Mosteiro Jerónimos stop.
  2. Arrive for the cloister opening at 9:30am; the church opens at 10:30am, or at 2pm on Sundays.
  3. Walk on to Belém Tower for your slot; last entry is 5pm.
  4. Add MAAT if energy allows; the 15E stop for it is Altinho (MAAT).
  5. Take tram 15E back to the centre.

Good to know

  • The monastery and Tower shut on Mondays and MAAT on Tuesdays, so Wednesday to Sunday keeps all three open.
  • The Tower sells fixed time slots, and both Belém tickets can sell out before the day.
  • Free entry at the monastery and Tower covers residents of Portugal, not visitors.
  • The monastery ticket sold here cancels free up to 24 hours before; the Tower ticket sold here is non-refundable.

Baixa’s grid, Chiado above it and Bairro Alto beyond need no ticket, so this is the day to leave loose. Finish with supper in Bairro Alto.

  1. Start at Praça do Comércio and walk up Rua Augusta, the pedestrian street that links it with Rossio.
  2. Board tram 28 on Rua da Conceição for Chiado and Praça Luís de Camões, or ride the Metro to Baixa-Chiado.
  3. Browse Chiado’s shops and cafés, then walk up into Bairro Alto.
  4. Stay after dark, when Bairro Alto’s streets fill with bars and diners.

Good to know

  • Tram 28 runs from Graça to Campo Ourique via the Sé, Baixa, Chiado and Estrela, so it also serves day one’s climb.
  • Carris lists the Santa Justa Lift as temporarily closed, so this route does not use it.

If you have two days

With two days, keep Alfama and Belém and let Baixa and Chiado fold into the tram rides and one evening.

  1. Day 1: Alfama and the castle as written, ending in Baixa for dinner.
  2. Day 2: Belém as written, on a Wednesday to Sunday.
  3. Evening of day 2: tram 28 from Rua da Conceição up to Chiado, then Bairro Alto.
  4. Drop Baixa’s grid as a stop; you cross it on the way anyway.

If you have a fourth day

A fourth day is a choice, not a route. Each option leaves Lisbon, so pick one.

Good to know

  • Sintra: CP trains leave from Rossio, Oriente and Entrecampos, and the 24-hour Carris/Metro/CP ticket at €11.40 covers the train leg.
  • Pena Palace sells fixed entry slots, and a missed slot is not refunded, so time the train to the slot.
  • Cascais: the same 24-hour ticket covers CP’s Cascais line, a coast day instead of palaces.
  • Cacilhas: the 24-hour Carris/Metro/Transtejo ticket at €10.35 covers the ferry across the Tagus, a shorter half day.

Sintra and Cascais day trips

Facts that shape the trip

Closed days decide the order, and fares decide whether a pass pays. Loaded tickets beat paying on board.

Good to know

  • Every ticketed stop in this plan is shut on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December.
  • Carris lists the Glória, Lavra and Bica funiculars as out of service, so nothing here depends on one.
  • On board, a Carris tram ride costs €3.30 and a bus ride €2.30; a loaded Carris/Metro ticket costs €1.90 for 60 minutes.
  • A 24-hour Carris/Metro ticket costs €7.25, so it pays back only from a fourth ride in one day; this plan needs two or three.

Where a guided tour earns its money, and where it does not

A guide earns its place where the stone or the food needs explaining: Alfama’s lanes, Belém’s monuments and a Bairro Alto supper. Baixa and Chiado need only a tram ticket and your own feet.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Which weekday should I avoid for Belém?

Monday, when the monastery and the Tower are both shut, and Tuesday if MAAT matters to you. Wednesday to Sunday keeps all three open.

Do I need a 24-hour transport pass for three days?

Usually not. This plan needs two or three rides a day, and the 24-hour ticket pays back only from a fourth. Loaded 60-minute tickets also cost less than paying on board.

Is tram 28 worth riding?

Ride it once, uphill on day one. It links Baixa, the Sé and Alfama’s viewpoints, so it saves the steepest climb of the plan.

Can I use the Glória funicular or the Santa Justa Lift?

Not in this plan. Carris lists the Glória, Lavra and Bica funiculars as out of service and the Santa Justa Lift as temporarily closed, so every climb here is by tram or on foot.

Is entry free on Sundays?

Not for visitors. Free entry at the monastery and the Tower covers residents of Portugal, so other visitors buy a ticket.

What if I only have two days?

Keep Alfama and Belém, and fold Baixa and Chiado into the tram rides and one evening. Belém still takes a Wednesday to Sunday.
