Why book these three separately

Lisbon’s three headline monuments answer to different rules, so this route prices three tickets with one honest total, not a pass.

OptionOur verdict
Jerónimos MonasteryClosed Mondays, and it can close for state events. Its tickets often sell out, so book ahead.
Belém TowerEntry is by timed slot, weather can close it, and it is the one ticket here that cannot be refunded.
São Jorge CastleCloses on just five dates, and free to cancel. It is in Alfama, not Belém, so it needs its own trip across town.

Which ticket to book first

The order follows what limits each date. The monastery fixes your Belém day, the castle takes any day, and the tower ticket cannot be refunded, so it goes last. The table shows each closed day.

  1. Monastery first: choose a Tuesday to Sunday for Belém. Its tickets often sell out, and it is free to cancel until 24 hours ahead.
  2. Castle second, on a different day. It is open daily, so it absorbs whichever day the rest of your plan leaves free.
  3. Tower last, on the same Belém day as the monastery. Book its slot only once that day is fixed, because the ticket cannot be refunded.
  4. Keep 1 January, 1 May and 25 December empty: all three monuments are closed on those dates.

Good to know

  • The monastery can close for state events, so keep its 24-hour cancellation window in mind.
  • Weather can also close the tower, and its ticket cannot be refunded, so leave the day some room to move.

Booking each ticket

The monastery and castle tickets can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours ahead. The Belém Tower ticket cannot be refunded; the only tower option with free cancellation is a guided tour, which is a different product.

Good to know

  • Monastery: a host meets you near the entrance with your ticket and a short introduction, then you explore on your own.
  • Tower: a host introduces the tower outside, then you go in at your own pace. There is no guide inside, and entry runs in timed slots.
  • Castle: a coordinator waits at your meeting point with the ticket and a map, and the visit is self-guided.

Questions people ask

Can I book the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and São Jorge Castle as one ticket?

No. Each has its own reviewed ticket, bought and confirmed on its own. The total here is the sum of three starting prices, not a pass or a bundled checkout.

Which ticket should I book first?

The Jerónimos Monastery, because it fixes your Belém day and its tickets often sell out. Then the castle, and the Belém Tower slot last.

Which of these tickets can I cancel?

The monastery and castle tickets can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before the start. The Belém Tower ticket cannot be refunded.

Can the Belém monuments close on the day I have booked?

Yes. Both are closed on Mondays and on a few fixed dates. The monastery can also close for state events, and weather can close the tower.

Are any of these open on Christmas Day?

No. The monastery, the tower and the castle are all closed on 25 December. The castle is also closed on 24 and 31 December, 1 January and 1 May.

Does the Belém Tower need a time slot?

Yes. The tower admits visitors in timed slots, so choose the slot when you book and plan the monastery around it.
