Kyoto in One Day: Free Route or ¥6,000 Guided Walk? | Mubboo Tours & Tickets
Follow Kiyomizu-dera, Higashiyama and Gion on foot, take a stopping Keihan train to free Fushimi Inari, then return for the evening. A Gion–Higashiyama guided walk is optional at about ¥6,000 per adult; temple admission, train fares and meals cost extra. Check live tour prices before booking.

The loop
Start at Heian Jingu, walk south through Higashiyama, ride to Fushimi Inari and end in Pontocho. Gion-Shijo Station links the two halves, so the rides stay short.
- Reach Heian Jingu when it opens at 6:00; Higashiyama Station on the Tozai subway line, exit 1, is a 10-minute walk.
- Walk south to Yasaka Shrine, open around the clock, then follow the Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka lanes up past Yasaka Pagoda.
- Kiyomizu-dera also opens at 6:00, and entry is separate. Give it an hour, then walk back down through Gion to Gion-Shijo Station.
- Take the direct Keihan train to Fushimi-Inari, about 22 minutes; limited express trains skip that station.
- Climb the torii path in the late afternoon. The full mountain circuit is about 4 km and two hours, so turn back early if needed.
- Ride back to Gion-Shijo, walk along Shijo-dori to Pontocho and finish there; the lane runs 500 m north to Sanjo-dori.
| Option | Our verdict |
|---|---|
| Heian Jingu to Kiyomizu-dera | Free: walk the lanes and skip both paid gates. Mid: a guide covers Gion to Kiyomizu-dera. Splurge: your own licensed guide. |
| Fushimi Inari | Identical at every tier: free, open day and night, and the loop’s longest walk. A guide adds least here. |
| Pontocho | Free: stroll its 500 metres. Splurge: the food walk ends here and turns the finish into dinner. |
Free
Only Kiyomizu-dera and Heian Jingu’s garden charge entry, and the free day skips both. Everything else on the loop costs nothing beyond lunch and train fares.
- Walk Heian Jingu’s courtyard, then leave the garden behind it, which charges separately.
- Continue to Yasaka Shrine and down the Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka lanes toward Kiyomizu-dera, then turn back without paying to enter.
- Take Keihan from Gion-Shijo to Fushimi-Inari and climb as far as your legs allow; the shrine is free.
- Finish in Pontocho for dinner; the lane and the Kamo riverside cost nothing to walk.
Good to know
- In Gion, the city asks visitors not to stop, touch, follow or photograph geiko or maiko without permission, and not to block the road.
- Fushimi Inari asks visitors not to eat or drink outside marked rest areas, even while walking, or to stop on narrow paths to photograph.

See or book guided Gion and Higashiyama walks
- Start at Heian Jingu when it opens, then reach Gion for the walk’s meeting point; confirm the start time when you book.
- This walk ends near Kiyomizu-dera, so entering the temple is a separate purchase.
- Take Keihan from Gion-Shijo to Fushimi-Inari and climb in the late afternoon, exactly as on the free day.
- Finish in Pontocho on your own.

On your own
Fine if you like reading signs: you meet the same lanes and shrines without the stories.
With a guide
Worth it here: this walk is where the history, shrines and geisha-district etiquette come with names.
The mid-range day: about ¥6,000 per person in guided-walk tickets.
Prices checked 19 Sep 2026 · per adult, guided tours only; temple and garden entry, food, train fares and accommodation excluded
Splurge: about ¥37,000, guide and dinner

Two bookings change the day: a private licensed guide for Higashiyama, and a Gion and Pontocho food walk that replaces the self-guided dinner. They are separate bookings.
See or book a private licensed guide
- Name your sites when you book the guide: Heian Jingu, Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera fit one walking day.
- Budget lunch and train fares yourself, and ask the guide about temple entry when you plan the route.
- Ride Keihan to Fushimi-Inari on your own for the late-afternoon climb.
- Meet the food walk at Yasaka Shrine; it ends in Pontocho, where the loop ends.
Good to know
- The guide and the food walk have their own meeting points. Confirm the food walk’s start time before you plan the Fushimi Inari leg.
| Item | ¥ per adult | US$ |

On your own
Choose the mid tier if two fixed meeting points would cost you more than they add.
With a guide
The licensed guide plans the route with you; the food walk gives Pontocho a proper dinner.
The splurge day: about ¥37,000 per person in guide and food-walk tickets.

If you are on a layover
Kyoto has no airport of its own. Trains and buses from Kansai and Itami reach Kyoto Station in 50 to 100 minutes, so the full loop needs a day of its own.
Good to know
- The direct Haruka train from Kansai Airport takes about 80 minutes to Kyoto Station; the limousine bus takes about 100.
- From Osaka Itami Airport, the limousine bus to Kyoto Station takes 50 to 55 minutes.
- With under about ten hours between landing and take-off, do only Heian Jingu and Higashiyama, then head back.
| Item | Minutes to Kyoto Station |
|---|---|
| Kansai (KIX), Haruka train | 80 |
| Kansai (KIX), limousine bus | 100 |
| Itami (ITM), limousine bus (50 to 55) | 55 |

Where a guided tour earns its money in one day
A guide earns the fee on the Gion and Higashiyama stretch, where shrines and lanes need explaining. Fushimi Inari explains itself as you climb, so keep it free and book the guide for the morning.
Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask
Which stop do I drop if the day runs short?
Drop Heian Jingu first. It is the northern start, away from the Keihan line, while Higashiyama and Fushimi Inari carry the day.
Is any stop on the loop closed one day a week?
Yasaka Shrine and Fushimi Inari are open day and night, and Heian Jingu has no weekly closed day. Kiyomizu-dera’s closing time changes with the season and events.
Do I need a ticket for Fushimi Inari?
No. Kyoto’s official guide lists it as free, with worship possible day and night. The full mountain circuit is about 4 km and roughly two hours.
Can I photograph geiko in Gion?
Not without permission. The city asks visitors not to stop, follow or photograph geiko or maiko, not to enter private property, and not to block lanes.
