First Time in Kyoto? Pick Your Must-See Sights & Stay After Dark

Choose Kyoto by area: walk the east from Kiyomizu-dera through Higashiyama to Gion, make Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama separate visits, and leave time for Nishiki Market, tea, the Kamo River and Pontocho after dark. The animated map helps first-time visitors choose what matters most.

How to choose

Start with the time you can spare. Uji fits a morning, Nara a full day, and Ine only works as a whole coach day.

Good to know

  • Kobe, Himeji and Koyasan are left to our Osaka day-trip list; they start more easily from an Osaka bed.
  • Hiroshima and Miyajima are left out: guided days from Kyoto run up to twelve hours.

Uji: Byodoin and green tea in a morning

Uji is the easiest half day from Kyoto. Byodoin’s Phoenix Hall is the reason to go, and the town around it is known for matcha.

  1. Board the JR Nara Line Miyakoji Rapid at Kyoto Station; Uji Station is 17 minutes away.
  2. Walk about ten minutes to Byodoin and arrive soon after it opens.
  3. Take the Phoenix Hall interior visit only if your slot is soon; visits are timed and small.
  4. Cross the river to Ujigami Shrine, then stop for matcha before the train back.

Good to know

  • Byodoin’s garden and museum share one admission; the Phoenix Hall interior is a separate timed visit.
  • Interior waits have run to two or three hours on long holiday weekends.

Kurama and Kibune: a forest walk between two shrines

Kurama-dera sits on a wooded mountain north of the city, and a path crosses the ridge to Kifune Shrine. This is the trip for walking, not for ticking off sights.

  1. Reach Kurama by Eizan Railway from Demachiyanagi (30 minutes), or by the Karasuma subway and a 25-minute Kyoto Bus.
  2. Climb from the Nio Gate to the main hall on foot, or pay for the cable car.
  3. Follow the ridge path to Kifune Shrine; the whole walk to Kibuneguchi Station takes about two hours.
  4. Leave the mountain before the temple closes in the late afternoon.

Good to know

  • The cable car stops for scheduled inspections and occasional faults, so be ready to walk up.
  • Kifune Shrine has no admission charge.

Nara: temple, park and deer, 34 minutes by Kintetsu

Nara is the fullest day on this list. The Great Buddha Hall, a park of wild deer and a hilltop shrine sit within one walk of the train.

  1. Take a Kintetsu limited express from Kintetsu Kyoto Station: 34 minutes with a surcharge.
  2. The ordinary express changes at Yamato-Saidaiji and takes 46 minutes; JR’s Miyakoji Rapid takes about 45.
  3. Walk through Nara Park to the Great Buddha Hall, which opens at 7:30am from April to October.
  4. Feed the deer with park crackers only, one at a time.
  5. Add the Todai-ji museum or walk on to Kasuga Taisha before the train back.

Good to know

  • The Great Buddha Hall closes at 5:30pm from April to October and at 5pm from November to March.
  • A pack of ten deer crackers costs ¥200; stags can turn aggressive in autumn.

Hikone: a castle beside Lake Biwa, 47 minutes by train

Hikone is a one-castle day on the shore of Lake Biwa. The train is quick, so most of the day is yours for the castle and its garden.

  1. Take the JR train from Kyoto Station to Hikone; it takes 47 minutes.
  2. Enter the castle and Genkyu-en garden together; the castle opens at 8:30am and last entry is 4:30pm.
  3. Add the castle museum only if time allows; it joins on a third ticket.

Good to know

  • The guided Lake Biwa day adds a cruise to Chikubu Island and a stop in Nagahama.
  • That guided day runs about nine and a half hours, with entrance fees and public transport included.

Ine and Amanohashidate: a coach day to the sea

Photo: Naokijp, source, CC BY-SA 4.0 International.

Ine is a working fishing village of boathouses on the north coast, and Amanohashidate is a pine sandbar nearby. Together they are the one trip here where a coach makes the day possible.

  1. By public transport, allow about three hours each way from Kyoto, by train and then a local bus.
  2. Or join a coach day from Kyoto Station, which runs about nine hours in all.
  3. See Ine’s boathouses from the shore or a boat, and stay out of the homes and their private paths.
  4. Walk part of the 3.6 km Amanohashidate sandbar, or view it from the chairlift.

Good to know

  • Funaya are family homes and workplaces: do not enter them, and ask before filming residents’ daily life.
  • Ine’s tourist office posts each day’s boat operating status, so weather can change the boat leg.
  • The reviewed coach option includes the Ine boat and Amanohashidate chairlift tickets.

On your own

Possible by train and local bus, but about three hours each way.

With a guide

The practical choice: a nine-hour coach from Kyoto Station, boat and chairlift tickets included.

Ine and Amanohashidate days from Kyoto

If you only do one

Choose Nara for a full day and Uji for a morning. Save Ine for a day with nothing else planned, because the coach ride is most of it.

Good to know

  • Prefer walking to temples? Swap Nara for Kurama and Kibune.
  • Want a castle? Take Hikone from Kyoto; Himeji suits an Osaka base better.

Where a guided day earns its money, and where it does not

Pay for a guide at Ine, where public transport takes about three hours each way, and for a Nara half day when admissions and transport are bundled. Uji, Kurama and Hikone are easy alone.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Which day trip from Kyoto is best for a first visit?

Nara. A direct Kintetsu train takes 34 minutes, and Todai-ji, the deer park and Kasuga Taisha fit one day on foot.

Can I combine Uji and Nara in one day?

Yes. The JR Nara Line links them, and Uji to Nara takes 31 minutes on the Miyakoji Rapid. See Byodoin first, then Nara in the afternoon.

Is the Phoenix Hall interior worth the wait?

Only when your slot is soon. Visits are timed and capped, and long holiday weekends have brought waits of two to three hours.

Can I reach Ine without a tour?

Yes, but plan for about three hours each way by train and local bus. A coach day is the version that fits one day comfortably.
