Where to book each kind of Japan experience

Japan’s bookable experiences gather around a handful of bases, most of them a Shinkansen ride from Tokyo. For each base, the table gives what it is known for, the fastest direct train from Tokyo in the JR Central, JR East or Tobu Railway timetable (the JAL flight for Hokkaido and Okinawa), and how many direct services run on a weekday.

Train times and weekday services: JR Central Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen timetable and Tokyo Station departures, JR East station timetables and the Tobu Railway limited express timetable, counted for Thursday 17 September 2026; flights: JAL domestic timetable for September and October 2026. All checked 17 September 2026. Activity prices on the buttons are the first featured option and change by date.

Day trip from Tokyo, or a night in the region?

  • Under two hours each way, as for Nikko (1h 47m from Asakusa) and Lake Kawaguchiko (1h 54m from Shinjuku): a day trip from Tokyo works. Direct trains to Kawaguchiko are few (three ran on Thursday 17 September 2026), so for Mount Fuji we would compare a coach day tour before building the day around a train.
  • Kyoto at 2h 08m, Osaka at 2h 21m and Kanazawa at 2h 24m: a same-day return is possible but puts four and a half hours or more on the Shinkansen. Our choice is at least one night, with Nara as a half day from Kyoto rather than a trip from Tokyo.
  • Hiroshima, 3h 48m at best: not a day trip from Tokyo. We would stay a night, or visit as part of a route through Kyoto and Osaka.
  • Sapporo and Naha are flights of 1h 30m and 2h 25m at best on JAL from Haneda, before the airport transfers: we treat Hokkaido and Okinawa as their own stays.

Train times are the fastest direct services in the JR Central, JR East and Tobu Railway timetables, and flight times are the JAL schedule; many departures take longer, and station or airport transfers are extra. A tour’s meeting point can be away from the station, so check it before booking the train.

Dates in 2026 that change what you can book

The Cabinet Office lists Japan’s 2026 national holidays below. Museums, temples and tour operators can change their hours on these days. The run of holidays from Wednesday 29 April to Wednesday 6 May and the three days from Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 September are the dates we would check first. A museum that closes on Mondays may open on a holiday Monday and close the next day instead, as the Tokyo National Museum does. Our advice: check the opening hours for your date before booking any date on this list.

  • Thursday 1 January · New Year’s Day
  • Monday 12 January · Coming of Age Day
  • Wednesday 11 February · National Foundation Day
  • Monday 23 February · Emperor’s Birthday
  • Friday 20 March · Vernal Equinox Day
  • Wednesday 29 April · Showa Day
  • Sunday 3 May · Constitution Memorial Day
  • Monday 4 May · Greenery Day
  • Tuesday 5 May · Children’s Day
  • Wednesday 6 May · Substitute holiday
  • Monday 20 July · Marine Day
  • Tuesday 11 August · Mountain Day
  • Monday 21 September · Respect for the Aged Day
  • Tuesday 22 September · Holiday between two national holidays
  • Wednesday 23 September · Autumnal Equinox Day
  • Monday 12 October · Sports Day
  • Tuesday 3 November · Culture Day
  • Monday 23 November · Labour Thanksgiving Day

Compare tours

A Kyoto district walk or a cross-city highlights tour?

Choose a focused walk for interpretation and time to ask questions. A highlights route suits a shorter stay when seeing several named places matters more. Compare the map, transport between stops and actual temple entry inclusions; a long attraction list can hide a rushed day.

A Tokyo private guide or a fixed itinerary?

A private format can suit a particular interest or pace, but check how much can actually be changed. Guide fees, local transport, entry tickets and meals may be separate. Send the operator your priorities before treating a customisable title as a confirmed plan.

Compare Tokyo Activities from ≈ US$130

Osaka food walk or cooking session?

A walk offers neighbourhood context and multiple stops; a cooking session spends more time on one set of skills. Compare the dishes, portion expectations and dietary arrangements. Check whether drinks and any market visit are included rather than assuming the product title covers them.

Explore Osaka Food Experiences from ≈ US$45

Hiroshima alone or Hiroshima with Miyajima?

Choose the city-focused option when memorial interpretation is the priority. A combined visit offers variety but divides the day between places and transport. Read the museum allowance, ferry arrangements and return point before deciding which format fits.

Compare Hiroshima Activities from ≈ US$210

Mount Fuji by Lake Kawaguchiko or through Hakone?

Listings split between the Lake Kawaguchiko side, with stops such as Chureito Pagoda, and the Hakone side, with a lake cruise or cable car option. Check which side the route covers, whether the return is by coach or bullet train, and where it ends in Tokyo.

Compare Mount Fuji Day Trips from ≈ US$55

Nara as its own afternoon or part of a Kyoto day?

One format gives Nara an afternoon around Todai-ji and Nara Park. Others fold Nara Park into a full day with Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama or Uji. Compare the hours spent in Nara itself before assuming the deer park and the temple both get time.

Planning Japan activities: FAQs

Will a Japan search only show activities near my hotel?

No. It is a national catalogue. Select Tokyo, Kyoto or another base first, then read the meeting address. Hokkaido and Okinawa still cover large areas, so narrow them further using the actual town or island when needed.

Does a guided tour include trains and attraction tickets?

Only if the product lists them. Compare the inclusions and exclusions for the option you select, including local transport, admission, meals and guide fees. A private guide listing is not automatically an all-inclusive day.

Can a food experience accommodate dietary requirements?

This depends on the operator and the exact menu. Check the listing and contact the operator with the specific requirement before booking. Do not infer suitability from a general food-tour category or assume substitutions are available at every stop.

Where do I choose my activity date?

On the booking platform after opening the product. Mubboo does not preselect a date or promise availability from the displayed starting price. Check the date, start time, option and cancellation terms together before completing the booking.

Does a Hiroshima and Miyajima tour cover the Miyajima Visitor Tax?

Hatsukaichi City taxes everyone who reaches Miyajima by boat, except preschool children, and the boat company collects it with the fare. A ticket bought in advance through a travel agency may need the tax paid separately at the ferry window. Check whether a listing that includes the ferry also names the tax.

Why do Nara day trips appear in the Kyoto collection?

Many Nara day trips are listed under Kyoto and start in Kyoto or Osaka, so searching Nara inside the Kyoto collection finds them. Read the meeting point for the option you choose, because one product can offer both departure cities.

Is a sumo show the same as a grand sumo tournament?

No. A show listing stages a demonstration, often with a meal or photos. The six grand tournaments run in Tokyo in January, May and September, Osaka in March, Nagoya in July and Fukuoka in November. Check the date and venue a tournament listing names.

Can travellers under 20 join a sake tasting?

Japanese law bars anyone under 20 from drinking alcohol, and lowering the age of majority to 18 in 2022 did not change that. Check the age rules on a sake tasting or pairing listing before booking for a mixed-age group.
