The loop

One walkable loop covers the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern and the Grand Bazaar, then a short tram ride to Eminönü for a Bosphorus ferry crossing. Every tier follows the same route; only what you pay to go inside changes.

  1. Start at the Blue Mosque, free to enter outside the five daily prayer times.
  2. Cross Sultanahmet Square to Hagia Sophia; book gallery access ahead, or view the exterior free.
  3. Walk a few minutes to the Basilica Cistern, a separately ticketed site of its own.
  4. Head to the Grand Bazaar to browse its covered lanes, free at any hour Monday to Saturday.
  5. Take the T1 tram to Eminönü and board a Şehir Hatları ferry across the Bosphorus to Üsküdar.
  6. Ride the ferry back to Eminönü; the round trip is the loop’s one genuine cross-continent experience.

Free

The free version keeps every stop outside a ticket booth: the Blue Mosque’s interior, Hagia Sophia’s exterior and Sultanahmet Square, and the Grand Bazaar’s lanes. Nothing here needs an attraction ticket, only a ferry fare for the Bosphorus crossing.

  1. Visit the Blue Mosque outside prayer times; cover shoulders and knees, and women their hair, with free headscarves at the entrance.
  2. Walk across Sultanahmet Square for a free view of Hagia Sophia’s dome and exterior.
  3. Continue to the Grand Bazaar and browse its covered lanes, free any day but Sunday.
  4. Walk or tram to Eminönü for the Şehir Hatları ferry pier.
  5. Cross to Üsküdar and back on the public ferry, paying only its own fare.

Good to know

  • A single Üsküdar crossing costs ₺58.52 with an Istanbulkart since 20 July 2026; pay the fare again for the return crossing.

On your own

Every stop is free beyond the ferry’s own transit fare; the loop reads from a map alone.

With a guide

Not needed here — the mosque, the bazaar and the ferry pier all explain themselves.

The free day: free, beyond the ferry’s own small fare.

Mid: about ₺5,800 in tickets

This tier keeps the exact same loop and order as the free day; only two stops move from outside-only to going inside. Hagia Sophia’s gallery and the Basilica Cistern’s chamber are both walk-up, so neither changes your route, only your budget.

  1. Enter through the gallery gate opposite the Sultan Ahmed III Fountain with your booked Hagia Sophia ticket.
  2. See the upper gallery’s Byzantine mosaics before the queue builds later in the day.
  3. Walk to the Basilica Cistern and buy its own entrance ticket to see the sunken columns.
  4. Visit the Blue Mosque and browse the Grand Bazaar exactly as the free day, no ticket needed for either.
  5. Take the T1 tram to Eminönü and cross to Üsküdar on the public ferry.

Good to know

  • Hagia Sophia’s visiting area closes from 12:00 to 14:00 on Fridays for prayers.

On your own

Both tickets are walk-up; Hagia Sophia’s own gate and the cistern’s booth need no booking ahead.

Not needed at this tier — both sites’ own signage explains what you’re seeing.

Splurge: add Topkapi Palace

Topkapi Palace’s own combined ticket adds the Ottoman sultans’ residence on top of Hagia Sophia and the cistern, needing an extra hour or two the other tiers skip. A small-group guided tour covers Hagia Sophia, Topkapi and the cistern in one scheduled block instead, if time matters more than budget.

  1. Keep Hagia Sophia’s and the Basilica Cistern’s tickets exactly as the mid-range day.
  2. Walk to Topkapi Palace and use its combined ticket for the Palace, Harem and Hagia Irene.
  3. Budget an extra hour or two here; Topkapi rewards a slower, fuller visit than the other sites.
  4. Browse the Grand Bazaar and visit the Blue Mosque as on every tier.
  5. Or skip all three tickets and book the small-group guided tour of the same three sites instead.

Good to know

  • Topkapi Palace is closed every Tuesday; ticket sales stop about 30 minutes before closing time.

On your own

All three tickets stay separate, walk-up bookings, not a single guided visit.

With a guide

A small-group tour fits all three sites into one scheduled block — useful when time is tighter than budget.

Guided Hagia Sophia, Topkapi and cistern tours

If you are on a layover

Istanbul Airport reaches Sultanahmet by metro and tram in about 80 minutes; Sabiha Gökçen’s metro-ferry-tram route runs closer to 100 minutes. Budget the same again for the return.

Good to know

  • Istanbul Airport’s M11, M2 and T1 tram reach Sultanahmet in about 75 to 85 minutes.
  • Sabiha Gökçen’s M4 metro, a Bosphorus ferry and the T1 tram take around 100 minutes.
  • Under about five hours from landing, keep the free tier and skip Topkapi Palace.
  • Budget the same transit time again for the return trip to either airport.

Where a guided tour earns its money in one day

The small-group tour is the one booking that reshapes your day’s timing: one guide sequences Hagia Sophia, Topkapi and the cistern back-to-back instead of you planning three separate visits yourself. The Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar still work well alone.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Is the Blue Mosque really free to enter?

Yes. It is free at any budget, but it closes to sightseeing for roughly 60 to 90 minutes at each of the five daily prayers and stays closed to tourists until the early afternoon on Fridays.

Do I need to book Hagia Sophia or the Basilica Cistern ahead?

No. Both sell walk-up tickets at their own gates, though a skip-the-line ticket saves time given the queues at Hagia Sophia’s newer visitor gate.

Which single paid upgrade matters most with only a few hours?

Hagia Sophia’s upper gallery. The Blue Mosque is free either way, so the cistern and Topkapi are the ones worth trading time for.

Can I skip Topkapi Palace in one day?

Yes. It is the splurge tier’s own addition; drop it first on a layover, since it needs an extra hour or two the other stops do not.

What closure changes the plan?

The Grand Bazaar shuts on Sundays and bank holidays; Topkapi Palace shuts every Tuesday. Everything else on this loop stays open daily.

Is the Bosphorus ferry worth it in one day?

Yes. It is the loop’s one genuine cross-continent moment, inexpensive with an Istanbulkart, and the round trip fits inside a couple of hours.
