Three days: the default plan

Group Istanbul by area and by closure, not a checklist. Day 1 stays inside Sultanahmet Square, Day 2 moves to Topkapi and the bazaar, and Day 3 crosses to the Asian side.

  1. Day 1: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern — all a few minutes apart, no transit needed.
  2. Day 2: Topkapi Palace in the morning, then the Grand Bazaar by tram or a 15-minute walk.
  3. Day 3: a public ferry to Kadıköy on the Asian side, then back for an evening in Beyoğlu and Galata.
  4. Before you fly: book the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque tour if a guided history walk matters to you.
  5. The day before: check whether Day 2 falls on a Tuesday or Sunday — swap it with Day 1 or Day 3 if so.
  6. Day order: Topkapi Palace is closed Tuesdays; the Grand Bazaar is closed Sundays and bank holidays.

Day 1: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Cistern, about ₺3,500

Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern sit a few minutes apart around Sultanahmet Square, so Day 1 needs no transit.

Start at Hagia Sophia before the queue builds, cross the square to the Blue Mosque, then finish underground at the cistern.

  1. Enter Hagia Sophia soon after opening; gallery-floor admission runs about €25 per person.
  2. Walk across Sultanahmet Square to the Blue Mosque; entry is free, but it closes during each daily prayer.
  3. Finish at the Basilica Cistern, a short walk away; a daytime ticket runs about ₺1,950.
  4. Book the guided Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque tour ahead for the history explained rather than read off a plaque.
  5. Avoid arriving right at midday on a Friday — Hagia Sophia’s visiting area closes 12:00-14:00 for prayer that day.

Good to know

  • Hagia Sophia lists no weekly closure day; the Friday midday prayer window is what catches people out.
  • The Blue Mosque’s prayer closures run about 90 minutes each, five times a day — build in slack.
  • The cistern’s Night Shift ticket (about ₺3,000) runs 7:30-10pm if you would rather see it after dark.

Day 2: Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar, about ₺5,700

Topkapi Palace’s Ottoman court history and the Grand Bazaar’s trade history make one day about power and commerce, distinct from Day 1’s religious architecture.

The bazaar sits a short tram ride or a 15-minute walk from the palace, so the two fit one day without backtracking.

  1. Enter Topkapi Palace soon after its 9am opening; skip Tuesdays entirely, the palace’s one closed day.
  2. The single combined ticket (Palace, Harem and Hagia Irene) costs ₺2,750; no cheaper Harem-excluded option is listed.
  3. Walk 15 minutes down Divan Yolu, or ride two T1 tram stops, to the Grand Bazaar’s Beyazıt gate.
  4. Browse the bazaar’s covered lanes; it opens Monday to Saturday only, closed Sundays and bank holidays.
  5. Book the guided Topkapi Palace tour ahead for skip-the-line entry and the court history explained.

Good to know

  • Topkapi’s last entry comes earlier than closing time — 17:00 in winter, 17:30 in summer.
  • The Grand Bazaar charges no entry fee — the ticket cost of the day is the palace alone.
  • Day order: never schedule Day 2 on a Tuesday or a Sunday — swap it with Day 1 or Day 3.

Day 3: Cross to the Asian side, about ₺523

Istanbul is the only city built across two continents, and a ferry crossing to Kadıköy shows that better than any monument.

Spend the afternoon in Kadıköy’s market streets, then cross back for an evening in Beyoğlu and at Galata Tower.

  1. Ride the public ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy; tap in with Istanbulkart, ₺65.21 each way.
  2. Spend the afternoon in Kadıköy’s food and market streets — a local, residential pace, not a checklist.
  3. Ferry back to the European side; the same Istanbulkart fare applies for the return.
  4. Walk up to Galata Tower for a view that ties the peninsula, the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus together.
  5. Finish the evening on Istiklal Avenue in Beyoğlu, which stays busy later than Sultanahmet.
  6. Book the 2-hour Bosphorus cruise instead if you would rather see both shores from the water.

Good to know

  • The ferry crossing needs no advance booking — tap in with Istanbulkart and board the next departure.
  • Sabiha Gökçen Airport, on the Asian side, connects to Kadıköy directly by the M4 metro line.
  • Galata Tower lists no weekly closure day; queues build toward sunset, so go earlier for a shorter wait.

If you have two days

With two days, keep Day 1 as written. On Day 2, visit Topkapi Palace, then take a short round-trip ferry to Üsküdar instead of the Grand Bazaar and a separate Asian-side day.

  1. Day 1: as written — Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern.
  2. Day 2: Topkapi Palace, then a short round-trip ferry crossing to Üsküdar for the two-continents view.
  3. Drop the Grand Bazaar and Day 3’s Beyoğlu evening — Day 2’s Tuesday closure still applies to Topkapi.

If you have a fourth day

A fourth day adds Dolmabahçe Palace and a walk along the Bosphorus waterfront through Beşiktaş and Ortaköy — a 19th-century, European-influenced contrast to Topkapi’s Ottoman court.

Good to know

  • Dolmabahçe Palace’s combined ticket costs ₺2,000; the palace is closed Mondays.
  • Beşiktaş and Ortaköy add a Bosphorus-facing waterfront a transfer from Sultanahmet, not a walk from it.
  • Either add-on fits after Day 3 without repeating an area already covered.

Facts that shape the trip

Two closures decide Day 2’s placement more than anything else: Topkapi Palace’s Tuesday closure and the Grand Bazaar’s Sunday closure.

Good to know

  • Topkapi Palace: closed every Tuesday; last entry comes earlier than the closing time.
  • Grand Bazaar: closed Sundays and bank holidays; free to enter the rest of the week.
  • Dolmabahçe Palace: closed Mondays, plus New Year’s Day and two religious holidays.
  • Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque: open daily but pause for prayer, most noticeably Friday midday.

Where a guided tour earns its money, and where it does not

A guide earns its place at Hagia Sophia and Topkapi, where centuries of history are easy to miss unaided, or on the Bosphorus cruise if you would rather skip the ferry commute. Skip it for the Blue Mosque and the bazaar.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.
