Istanbul First Time: Sunlight, Street Life & the Bosphorus | Mubboo Tours & Tickets
A first look at Istanbul through historic buildings, markets, food streets, Beyoğlu, ferries and evening lights. Choose a major visit, a neighbourhood and time on the water, with the Princes’ Islands and Şile treated as separate outings.

A free day, in order
This is the free peninsula loop we'd walk ourselves: mosques, markets and a park, threaded in this order around prayer closures and bazaar hours.
- Start at the Blue Mosque before 10am, between the five daily prayer closures, then cross Sultanahmet Square past Hagia Sophia.
- Walk or tram to the Grand Bazaar (shut Sundays) and the Spice Bazaar next door (open daily) to browse without buying.
- Head downhill to Galata Bridge, cross with the fishermen, then continue to Gülhane Park for a free walk by Topkapı’s outer wall.
- Ride the public ferry across the Bosphorus from Eminönü for a small Istanbulkart fare, then back.
- Finish uphill at Süleymaniye Mosque before its own prayer closures, for the widest free Golden Horn view on the peninsula.
Two free mosques, and their prayer closures

Istanbul's two grandest imperial mosques cost nothing to enter. The only real constraint is timing a visit around the five daily prayers, when both close to sightseeing.
Good to know
- Blue Mosque: free entry, closes roughly 60-90 minutes at each of five daily prayers, and stays shut to tourists through Friday's midday prayer until early afternoon.
- Süleymaniye Mosque: free entry (donations welcome), general hours about 9am-6pm outside prayer times, on the hill with the widest Golden Horn view.
- The Blue Mosque hands out free headscarves at the entrance; cover shoulders and knees, and women their hair, before going in.
The bazaars and Galata Bridge, free to browse
Two historic covered markets and the bridge between them cost nothing to walk; only the Grand Bazaar keeps a weekly closed day the Spice Bazaar doesn’t.
Good to know
- Grand Bazaar: free entry, Monday to Saturday roughly 9am-7pm, closed every Sunday and on major religious holidays.
- Spice Bazaar: free entry, open daily including Sunday, roughly 9am-7pm, the one to pick when the Grand Bazaar is shut.
- Galata Bridge: free to cross any time, its upper deck lined with amateur fishermen from end to end.
Gülhane Park and the old city walls
A former palace garden and a fifth-century fortification both cost nothing to walk, with no ticket at either.
Good to know
- Gülhane Park: free entry for all ages, Topkapı Palace's former outer garden, open to the public since 1912.
- Istanbul's Theodosian land walls: free to view and walk along their 5.7-kilometre run, part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Areas of Istanbul since 1985.
Nearly free, and worth it
One ferry ride links the free stops above and does the one thing none of them can: cross between two continents by public transport.
Good to know
- Şehir Hatları’s Üsküdar-Eminönü public ferry: 58.52 lira with Istanbulkart under the tariff effective from 20 July 2026, about 10 minutes each way.

Free versus paid: our verdicts
Three decisions come up on almost every Istanbul itinerary, and the free version is the right call more often than not.
| Option | Our verdict |
|---|---|
| The free Blue Mosque and Süleymaniye, versus Hagia Sophia's paid gallery ticket | Both free mosques give the same imperial Ottoman scale; pay only for Hagia Sophia’s Byzantine mosaics upstairs. |
| The free public ferry, versus a paid Bosphorus cruise | The ferry gives the same crossing and skyline; pay only for a longer loop with commentary or a sunset timing. |
| Museum Pass Istanbul, versus paying per site | The pass doesn't cover Hagia Sophia at all, so skip it if that's your only paid stop and book its ticket alone. |
When paying is worth it: €40
Paying is worth it once, for Hagia Sophia's upper-gallery mosaics; the free mosques below don't show Byzantine artwork at all.
A short Bosphorus cruise is worth adding only if a longer loop past waterfront palaces matters more than the free ferry's shorter crossing.

Good to know
- Hagia Sophia entrance ticket: from €40, our reviewed option; the venue's own listed price is €25, through a separate gate opposite the Sultan Ahmed III Fountain.
- Museum Pass Istanbul, €105, does not cover Hagia Sophia at all; book the entrance ticket on its own instead.
- A 1-hour Bosphorus cruise adds a longer loop and commentary the free ferry doesn’t; our reviewed option is free to cancel up to 24 hours ahead.

Where paying is worth it, and where it is not
Spend on Hagia Sophia's ticket if Byzantine mosaics matter to you, and on a longer Bosphorus cruise if the waterfront palaces do. Everything else here, both free mosques, both bazaars, the bridge, the park and the walls, stays free at full strength.

Questions people ask
Is the Blue Mosque really free to enter?
Yes, any day. It closes to sightseeing for roughly 60-90 minutes at each of the five daily prayers, and stays shut through Friday's midday prayer until the early afternoon.
Can I visit the Grand Bazaar on a Sunday?
No, it's closed every Sunday; the Spice Bazaar nearby stays open daily, so swap one bazaar for the other.
Is the public ferry the same crossing as a Bosphorus cruise?
For the crossing itself, yes; a cruise adds a longer loop past waterfront palaces that the short public ferry doesn't cover.
Does the Museum Pass cover Hagia Sophia?
No. Hagia Sophia became an active mosque again in 2020 and now sells its own separate entrance ticket outside the pass system.
What should I wear to visit the free mosques?
Shoulders and knees covered for everyone, plus a headscarf for women; the Blue Mosque hands out free headscarves at the entrance if you arrive without.
