How to choose

Five trips leave Istanbul by ferry, sea bus, train or coach, each under two and a half hours away. Three have real guided day tours today; two are best done independently for now.

Good to know

  • Left out: Cappadocia and the coasts are separate regions with their own travel time, and the Bosphorus crossing is already covered on the Istanbul city guide.

Büyükada, from ₺152

Büyükada, the largest of the Princes’ Islands, is Istanbul’s easiest day trip: a direct ferry, and no cars to dodge once you land.

  1. Take the Şehir Hatları ferry from Kabataş; it calls at Kadıköy, Kınalıada, Burgazada and Heybeliada before reaching Büyükada, about 90 minutes total.
  2. Tap in with an Istanbulkart; transfer discounts from other journeys don’t apply on this route.
  3. Once ashore, walk, rent a bicycle or ride one of the municipality’s electric buses.
  4. Spend the day on the quiet lanes and coastline; the island is small enough to cover without a fixed plan.

Good to know

  • The islands have been car-free for decades; since 2020, municipal electric vehicles have replaced the old horse-drawn carriages.

On your own

Straightforward: one direct ferry, no cars to navigate, and the island is small enough to explore on foot.

With a guide

A guided day adds lunch and an electric-car ride around the island, useful if you’d rather not plan the loop.

The ferry alone costs ₺152 one way; a guided day trip with lunch and the electric island car is sold separately.

Bursa, from ₺720

Bursa, the Ottoman Empire’s first real capital, pairs two free mosques with a cable-car ride up Uludağ. Reach it from Istanbul by sea bus across the Sea of Marmara.

  1. Board a BUDO sea bus at Kabataş; it runs four times a day to Mudanya, Bursa’s port, about 1 hour 50 minutes each way.
  2. From Mudanya pier, take a local bus or taxi about 25 minutes into central Bursa.
  3. Visit Ulu Cami first, Turkey’s largest great mosque with its 20 domes, then the Green Mosque and Green Tomb nearby.
  4. Ride the Uludağ cable car if you have time; the guided option below includes it, so book through that instead of arranging it separately.

Good to know

  • BUDO carries foot passengers only; no vehicles, and battery-powered scooters or e-bikes aren’t allowed aboard.

On your own

Workable: the sea bus runs four times a day, then a short local bus into the centre.

A guided day bundles the sea crossing, lunch and the Uludağ cable car into one booking.

Sapanca, from ₺255

Sapanca’s lake sits a short regional or high-speed train ride from Istanbul’s Asian side, with a quick local hop from Arifiye station to the shore.

  1. Board a train at Pendik; 15 regional and YHT services run daily to Arifiye, the closest station, as fast as 1 hour 13 minutes.
  2. From Arifiye, take a short local dolmuş or taxi to Sapanca’s lakeshore.
  3. Walk the lakeside paths at Gölpark or along the shore; the lake’s basin covers 252 square kilometres on the Sakarya–Kocaeli border.

Good to know

  • YHT services are faster but cost more than the regional train; both reach the same Arifiye station.

Edirne, from ₺400 by coach

Edirne, an earlier Ottoman capital, holds Mimar Sinan’s UNESCO-listed Selimiye Mosque. It has no fast link from Istanbul: the coach beats the train, but neither makes for a short day.

  1. Take an intercity coach from Esenler, Harem or Alibeyköy otogar; Metro Turizm, Kale Seyahat and others run the route, the fastest about 2 hours 29 minutes.
  2. The regional train from Halkalı runs only twice a day, taking about 5 hours 36 minutes each way. Skip it unless the times suit you exactly.
  3. Visit the Selimiye Mosque first, Mimar Sinan’s own favourite of his works, then the surrounding külliye of covered market and former madrasas.
  4. Plan the return coach before you go; a same-day round trip is a long day either way.

Good to know

  • A single private full-day tour from Istanbul exists, priced well above the other trips on this page. It doesn’t turn up in an ordinary keyword search.
Item₺ per adultUS$

Possible in a long day: the coach beats the train, but it’s still five hours or more round trip.

One private full-day tour is sold, but no shared or budget guided option currently exists for Edirne.

Şile on the Black Sea, by bus

Şile is a Black Sea fishing town inside Istanbul’s own municipal boundary. It has a 19th-century lighthouse and a beach scene a world away from the historic peninsula.

  1. Take İETT bus line 139 from Harem, on the Asian side; it’s a long ride, so start early.
  2. Once in Şile, walk down to the harbour and the beach, then out to the lighthouse on its headland.
  3. Plan your return bus before you go; services run roughly every four hours, not on demand.

Good to know

  • Line 139 charges by distance band: İETT’s 1 January 2026 table ran from ₺65.45 (Ağva–Şile) to ₺213.90 (Ağva–Üsküdar), before Istanbul’s 10% fare rise on 20 July.
  • No clean guided day tour for Şile alone was found in the current catalogue this pass; keyword searches return generic Bosphorus cruises and Istanbul transfers instead.

Şile tours from Istanbul

The bus fare depends on how far you ride; no guided day tour currently matches this trip in the catalogue.

If you only do one

Büyükada, if there’s time for only one: a direct ferry and car-free islands make an easy full day with no booking needed. For Ottoman history instead, pick Bursa.

Good to know

  • A guide is worth it for Bursa or Sapanca, where one booking replaces several local buses and adds the Uludağ cable car or the Masukiye valley.
  • Skip Edirne and Şile for a first, short list; both are real day trips, just longer or thinner on guided options right now.

Where a guided day tour earns its money, and where it does not

A guide earns its keep at Bursa and Sapanca, bundling the transfer, lunch and the sights into one booking; it matters less at Büyükada, where the ferry alone gets you there. Edirne and Şile currently have no matching guided product.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Is the Bursa sea bus better than driving or a bus?

The BUDO sea bus across the Sea of Marmara is the direct way in. It carries foot passengers only, so pair it with a short local bus or taxi from Mudanya into central Bursa.

Should I take the train or the coach to Edirne?

Take the coach: the regional train runs only twice a day and takes about five and a half hours each way. The fastest coach is well under three hours.

Are cars allowed on the Princes’ Islands?

No. Private cars have been banned for decades; since 2020 electric municipal vehicles have replaced the old horse-drawn carriages, alongside walking and bicycles.

Is there a guided tour to Şile?

No clean match was found this pass; keyword searches return unrelated Bosphorus cruises and city tours instead of a Şile-specific trip.

Do I need to book the Uludağ cable car separately?

No. Book the guided Bursa and Uludağ option instead: it includes the cable car, lunch and transfer in one reservation.

How early should I leave for Şile?

Start early. The bus takes over two hours each way and runs roughly every four hours. A late start risks a rushed visit or a long wait back.
