Which airport, when you get to choose
Your airline decides the airport, not your itinerary. IST is Istanbul's main international gateway on the European side; SAW sits on the Asian side, mainly serving domestic and budget carriers.
Good to know
- Check your ticket’s airport code before booking a hotel — IST and SAW sit on opposite sides of the Bosphorus, roughly an hour apart by road.
- IST has the only direct rail to the historic core's doorstep at Gayrettepe; SAW's metro only reaches Kadıköy, still on the Asian side.
- Both airports run coach services around the clock (Havaist from IST, Havabüs from SAW) that skip the change the metro requires, for a higher fare.
- A late landing at either airport is a metered taxi, not a scheduled service — budget for tolls and traffic, not just the fare.
| Direct rail | Typically used by | The one trap | |
|---|---|---|---|
| IST | M11 to Gayrettepe, then change for Taksim or the old city | Full-service and long-haul airlines | M11 alone doesn't reach the historic peninsula |
| SAW | M4 direct to Kadıköy, still the Asian side | Pegasus, AJet and other budget or regional carriers | M4 never crosses the Bosphorus — Taksim needs a further change |
IST: ₺46 by metro

M11 leaves right from the terminal and reaches Gayrettepe, on the M2 line, in about 30 minutes for ₺46 on İstanbulkart. Change there for Taksim, Şişli or the tram toward the old city — M11 itself stops at Gayrettepe.
Havaist runs two direct coaches with no change: HVL-9 to Taksim (about 90 minutes) and HVL-13 to Sultanahmet (about 110 minutes), each ₺470. A taxi runs on the meter, roughly ₺2,000 or more with tolls.
See or book a private IST transfer
- Follow signs for the Airport Railroad (M11) inside the IST terminal.
- Tap in with İstanbulkart or a contactless bank card before boarding.
- Ride to Gayrettepe, the M11's city-side terminus, in about 30 minutes.
- Change to the M2 line for Taksim, or the tram for the old city.
- For a direct coach instead, find Havaist HVL-9 (Taksim) or HVL-13 (Sultanahmet) at the terminal's bus zone.
Good to know
- M11 alone only reaches Gayrettepe — it does not run into Taksim or the historic peninsula on its own.
- Havaist HVL-9 to Taksim and HVL-13 to Sultanahmet run direct with no change, each about 20 to 30 departures a day.
- İstanbulkart's single network fare covers the metro, buses and trams citywide — the same card works on Havaist too.
- A metered taxi runs the same tariff day and night; bridge or motorway tolls add to the fare on top of the meter.

SAW: ₺46 by metro

M4 boards right at SAW's own station and reaches Kadıköy in about 55 minutes for ₺46 on İstanbulkart, trains every 5 to 8 minutes. Kadıköy is still the Asian side — Taksim or the old city needs a further change onto Marmaray or a ferry.
Havabüs runs two direct coaches: SG-2 to Taksim (about 90 minutes, ₺485) and SG-1 to Kadıköy (about 60 minutes, ₺300). A taxi crossing to the European side adds a bridge or tunnel toll.
See or book a private SAW transfer
- Follow signs for the M4 metro inside SAW's terminal — it has its own station entrance.
- Tap in with İstanbulkart or a contactless card; trains leave every 5 to 8 minutes.
- Ride to Kadıköy, the line's western end, in about 55 minutes.
- From Kadıköy, change onto Marmaray or a ferry to reach the European side.
- For a direct coach instead, find Havabüs SG-2 (Taksim) or SG-1 (Kadıköy) at the terminal exit.
Good to know
- M4 does not cross the Bosphorus — it ends at Kadıköy, still on the Asian side, not central Istanbul.
- Havabüs SG-2 to Taksim and SG-1 to Kadıköy run direct with no change, about every 30 to 45 minutes.
- A taxi to the European side adds a bridge or tunnel toll on top of the regulated meter, which runs the same tariff day and night.
- SAW mainly serves budget, domestic and regional routes — check your airline before assuming you land at IST.

Late arrivals and luggage
Neither metro line runs all night — M11 and M4 both stop around midnight, though Havaist and Havabüs keep running with fewer departures. A reviewed private transfer can be booked ahead for either airport, free to cancel. A metered taxi is the fallback at any hour, on the same regulated tariff day and night, plus tolls on a European-side trip from SAW.
Good to know
- Confirm your M11 or M4 departure time before relying on the metro for a very early or very late flight.
- A reviewed private transfer can be booked ahead and meets you at arrivals, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
- The taxi meter and per-kilometre rate are the same at any hour — there is no separate night surcharge.
- A taxi from SAW to the European side adds a bridge or tunnel toll on top of the meter, at any hour.
IST after M11 stops

Questions people ask
Which Istanbul airport will my flight use?
Whichever your airline flies into — IST is the main hub for full-service and long-haul carriers, while SAW mainly handles budget, domestic and regional routes. Check your ticket, not your hotel.
Does the metro reach Taksim or Sultanahmet directly?
No. M11 from IST stops at Gayrettepe, and M4 from SAW stops at Kadıköy — both need a further change to reach Taksim or the historic peninsula.
Is Sabiha Gökçen on the same side of the city as Istanbul Airport?
No. IST is on the European side; SAW is on the Asian side, across the Bosphorus from the historic core.
Is a taxi more expensive at night?
The meter itself doesn't change — Istanbul's regulated tariff runs the same day and night. A European-side trip from SAW adds a bridge or tunnel toll at any hour.
Can I book a Mubboo airport transfer for Istanbul?
Yes — a reviewed private transfer is available for both IST and SAW, free to cancel up to 24 hours before pickup.
