Honolulu Must-Sees for First-Time Visitors: 4, 5 or 6 Days?
Build four core days around Waikīkī and Lēʻahi, Downtown Honolulu, Pearl Harbor and Hanauma Bay. Add a full North Shore day and another on Windward Oʻahu for a six-day plan. With five days, choose the coast that best fits your trip.

The loop
Waikiki makes one flat shore walk, about 40 minutes on foot from end to end. Diamond Head is the only stop that needs a booked slot, so on the paid tiers it goes first.
- From HNL, ride the W Line to the Kapahulu and Cartwright stop at the park end of Waikiki: 35 minutes on the timetable. Staying in Waikiki? Skip to step 2.
- Start in Kapiolani Park, 10 minutes on foot from the stop. On the paid tiers, do the Diamond Head hike first and join the walk at Kuhio Beach.
- Walk 16 minutes west to Kuhio Beach and swim in front of a lifeguard tower; the towers are staffed from 8am.
- Walk 11 minutes on to Waikiki Beach Walk for lunch and shade.
- Finish on the Kuhio Beach seawall for sunset. The towers close at 6:30pm, so swim before then.

|---|---|
| Kuhio Beach and Beach Walk | The same on every tier: a shore walk and a swim near a lifeguard tower. |
| Diamond Head | Mid and splurge only. Entry is by reservation, and the first slot opens at 6am. |
| Kapiolani Park | The free day’s morning stop; the paid tiers spend that morning on the hike. |
| The afternoon | Free and mid stay on the shore. Splurge spends 30 minutes in the air instead. |
Free

The free day buys no ticket, and from a Waikiki hotel it costs nothing. It is a shoreline: a swim while the towers are staffed, a walk through the park and along the beach, and the sun going down over Kuhio Beach.
- Take the W Line in, paying the exact cash fare, and start in Kapiolani Park, 10 minutes from the stop.
- Walk 16 minutes to Kuhio Beach and swim from 8am, close to a lifeguard tower; ask the guard about conditions first.
- Walk 11 minutes on to Beach Walk for lunch and shade.
- Be back on the Kuhio Beach seawall for sunset, and stay out of the water once the towers close.
Good to know
- Ocean Safety staffs the Waikiki towers from 8am to 6:30pm every day and posts closures on the city’s website.
- The state advises swimming in daylight and never after sunset, when visibility is poor.
- Sunset is near 7:15pm at midsummer and 5:55pm at midwinter: in summer the towers close before it, in winter the light goes first.

On your own
Suits everyone: the shore, the park and the sunset need no booking.

Skip it here: nothing on this shore needs a guide, so keep the money for the paid tiers.

Mid: about US$50 with the Diamond Head hike
Mid adds one booked slot: the Diamond Head hike, done first while the morning is cool. The reservation is the catch, because walk-ins without a Hawaii ID are turned away.
See or book the Diamond Head hike with a Waikiki shuttle
- Book the earliest slot you can reach: reservations start at 6:00am and open up to 30 days ahead.
- Choose a listing that names the reservation ticket and the Waikiki pickup points.
- Allow 60 to 90 minutes on the trail, plus the ride out and back.
- Rejoin the loop at Kuhio Beach; from here the day is the free day.
Good to know
- Arrive within the first 30 minutes of your slot. A later arrival can be refused with no refund.
- Children aged three and under need no ticket. The reviewed shuttle option refunds in full when cancelled 24 hours ahead.
- The sun rises after 7am in midwinter, so book a later slot then: the first slots start in the dark.

On your own
Without a car, the trail is 43 minutes on foot from Kapiolani Park, so the shuttle earns its place.
With a guide
Skip it: the hike needs a slot, not a guide, and the shuttle solves the ride.
The mid-range day: about US$50 in fares and tickets.

Splurge: about US$490 with a helicopter flight

Splurge trades the shore afternoon for a helicopter flight over the crater you climbed that morning. It starts and ends at the airport, so plan it as the last stop before your ride to the gate.
See or book an Oahu helicopter flight
- Do the morning hike as on the mid day.
- Ride the W Line back to the airport: about 35 minutes on the printed timetable.
- Pick a flight time that leaves room for check-in before it and your own departure after it.
- Fly 30 minutes past Diamond Head, the Waikiki shore and the Nuʻuanu Pali. The flight ends where it began.
Good to know
- The operator refunds in full when you cancel up to 24 hours ahead, and the reviewed option follows the same rule.
- Heavier passengers pay a weight-and-balance fee on top of the seat price.

On your own
Waikiki is about 20 minutes away by car, so this suits a day that starts or ends at the airport.
With a guide
The flight is the guided part: nothing on its route needs a separate tour.
The splurge day: about US$490 in fares, the hike and the flight.

If you are on a layover
Count 35 minutes on the W Line and a 10-minute walk each way, plus check-in and security before your flight. Under about six hours from landing, skip Waikiki or make the airport flight your only stop.
Good to know
- The airport lists attended baggage storage, so bags need not ride the bus.
- Skyline’s airport station is beside Terminal 2, but rail does not reach Waikiki. The W Line is the direct bus.
- The W Line takes a HOLO card or cash. Cash means an exact fare, with no change and no transfer.

Where a paid ticket earns its money in one day
The shore loop needs no ticket. Paying earns its place twice: the Diamond Head slot, the one stop you cannot improvise, and the view from the air. Compare both on the tours page.
Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask
Do I need a reservation for Diamond Head?
Yes. Visitors without a Hawaii ID are turned away without one, and reservations open up to 30 days ahead. Children aged three and under need no ticket.
Which Diamond Head slot should I book?
In midsummer the first slot, at 6am, starts after sunrise, so take it. In midwinter the sun rises after 7am, so choose a later slot. Arrive within the first 30 minutes of it.
Can I add Pearl Harbor to the same day?
Not alongside the hike. The visitor center opens at 7am and the last Arizona Memorial boat leaves at 3:30pm, so Pearl Harbor takes a morning. Pick it or the hike, and keep the shore for the evening.
Is it safe to swim at Waikiki at sunset?
The lifeguard towers close at 6:30pm, and the state advises against swimming after sunset. Swim earlier, and watch the sunset from the seawall.
How do I get from the airport to Waikiki?
Take the W Line, about 35 minutes to the Kapahulu stop. It accepts cash with no change and no transfer, or a HOLO card. Rail stops short of Waikiki.
Does the helicopter flight leave from Waikiki?
No. The 30-minute flight starts and ends at the airport, about 20 minutes by car from Waikiki. The operator refunds in full up to 24 hours ahead.
