Kualoa Ranch: from about US$65 a tour, 45 minutes out
A working ranch in a windward valley, run as a menu of guided tours. It is the closest trip here and open almost every day, so it fills a half day cleanly.

- Choose by length: tours run 90 minutes to three hours, briefing included.
- Book a set time ahead, because tours have limited places and can sell out.

Dole Plantation and Haleiwa: a half day on the road north
Pineapple fields on the road north, then the town of Haleiwa: an easy half day with little walking. It also works as the first half of a Waimea Valley day.

- Head north: Dole Plantation sits on the road from Honolulu to the North Shore, in Wahiawa.
- Allow an hour for the train ride and pineapple cutting; the maze adds about 40 minutes and the garden about an hour.
- Continue to Haleiwa for lunch, on the way to Waimea Valley.

- Dole is open daily from 9:30am to 5:30pm, except on special-hours dates.
- The shop and visitor center are free to enter; the train, garden and maze are the paid attractions.

Simple by car; by bus, nearby Waimea Valley is two hours or more away, with transfers.

Waimea Valley: a paved walk to a waterfall swim
A botanical valley across from Waimea Bay, with a level paved path to a waterfall. Go for the walk and, if lifeguards allow, the swim; skip Mondays, when it is closed.

- Drive 1 to 1.5 hours from Waikiki; by bus it takes 2 to 2.5 hours, with transfers.
- Arrive by mid-morning: the valley opens at 9am, and lifeguards decide at 9am whether the falls are open for swimming.
- Walk the three-quarter-mile paved trail to the falls; allow 2.5 to 4 hours for the whole valley.

- Open Tuesday to Sunday, 9am to 4pm, and closed on Mondays; hours vary by season.
- Swimmers must wear a life jacket, and the valley lends them free.

Best by car, on any day but Monday; the bus takes two hours or more.

Polynesian Cultural Center: a full day that ends after dark
Six island villages by day and an evening show, in Laie at the far end of the North Shore. The closing days and the traffic decide the day more than the tickets do.

- Check the day first: the Center is closed on Sundays and on most Wednesdays.
- Leave Waikiki by about 10:30am; the villages run 12:15pm to 5:30pm, and the drive takes at least 60 to 75 minutes.
- Do not set off after 3:30pm on a weekday: commuter traffic to the North Shore stays heavy until 6:30pm.
- Stay for HĀ: Breath of Life, which ends at about 9pm, or leave when the villages close.

Maui: the Road to Hana, reached by air

A morning flight, then the Hana coast on a road that the state tourism authority encourages visitors to take with a permitted guide. It works only as a full day.

- Fly Honolulu to Kahului: the average flight is 45 to 60 minutes over about 100 miles.
- Allow two to four hours to drive the 52 miles to Hana, over 620 curves and 59 bridges.
- Book a late return flight, because a slow road leaves no slack.

Hilo and the volcanoes: the longest day
A Big Island volcano fits one day only as a flight plus a drive each way. From Hilo airport the park is 45 minutes by road.
- Fly Honolulu to Hilo: the average flight is 1 hour 2 minutes over 216 miles.
- From Hilo airport, the park is 30 miles southwest on Highway 11, about a 45-minute drive.
- Inside the park there is no shuttle or public transport, so you need a car or a tour.

- Fly into Kona instead and the park is 95 miles, or two to two and a half hours, away.
- The park does not accept cash.

Which day trips close on certain weekdays?
Waimea Valley is closed on Mondays, and the Polynesian Cultural Center on Sundays and most Wednesdays. Kualoa Ranch and Dole Plantation open daily, apart from holidays and special-hours dates.
Can I reach the North Shore without a car?
