Find your Hong Kong experience

Three days: the default plan
Group Hong Kong by island, not a checklist. Day 1 stays on Hong Kong Island, Day 2 crosses once to Kowloon and stays there, and Day 3 is a dedicated outing to Lantau Island.
- Day 1: Victoria Peak first thing, then Old Town Central once the escalator turns uphill at 10am.
- Day 2: cross by Star Ferry to Kowloon, spend the day there, and see Temple Street after dark.
- Day 3: the Ngong Ping 360 cable car to the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island.
- Before you fly: book the Peak Tram guided tour if a guided history walk matters to you.
- The day before: check the forecast — heavy rain or a high typhoon signal closes the Peak and can halt the cable car.
- Day order: ride the Peak Tram before 10am anyway, since the Sky Terrace 428 combo’s first ride must start by noon.
Day 1: Victoria Peak and Old Town Central, about HK$430

Victoria Peak and Old Town Central both sit on Hong Kong Island, so Day 1 never needs a harbour crossing.
Ride the Peak Tram before the queues build, then let the Central-Mid-Levels Escalator do the climbing once it turns uphill at 10am.
See or book the Peak Tram guided tour
- Ride the first Peak Tram up soon after 7:30am opening, before Sky Terrace 428’s queues build for the day.
- Sky Terrace 428 itself opens later — 10am on weekdays, 8am on weekends and public holidays — so time the viewing platform around that.
- Walk down into Old Town Central; ride the Central-Mid-Levels Escalator uphill once it flips direction at 10am, not before.
- Book the guided Peak Tram tour ahead for the skip-the-line entry and the history explained rather than read off a sign.
- Check the forecast before you go — a Black Rainstorm Warning or Typhoon Signal No. 8 closes Sky Terrace 428 immediately.
Good to know
- The Sky Terrace 428 combo ticket’s first ride must start before 12 noon; the return ride has no time limit.
- The escalator only runs downhill from 6am to 10am — walk it, don’t wait for it, if you’re out that early.
- A Peak Tram service disrupted by weather can be exchanged for another on-day slot within 30 days.

Day 1 in tickets: about HK$430.

Day 2: Kowloon by day, Temple Street after dark, about HK$920

The Star Ferry crossing puts Day 2 entirely on the Kowloon side: the Avenue of Stars by day, Temple Street’s market by night.
Temple Street itself keeps its own hours — the Tourism Board says it comes alive after dark, not in the afternoon.
See or book the Temple Street night food tour
- Take the Star Ferry from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui; tap in with Octopus, about HK$5 on the upper deck on a weekday.
- Walk the Avenue of Stars along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, then spend the afternoon in Mong Kok or Yau Ma Tei.
- Head to Temple Street after dark — stalls are still setting up in the late afternoon, so an early-evening visit can miss vendors.
- Browse the stalls, get a fortune read, and eat at a dai pai dong table rather than a sit-down restaurant.
- Book the guided Temple Street night food tour ahead if you’d rather have a local order for you than guess at a stall.
Good to know
- Weekend Star Ferry fares run higher than weekday fares — HK$6.5 upper deck on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays versus HK$5.0 on weekdays.
- The Temple Street guided food tour is all-sales-final — no free cancellation if plans change.
| Item | HK$ per adult | US$ |
|---|---|---|
| Star Ferry, Central to Tsim Sha Tsui, weekday upper deck | HK$5 | ≈ US$1 |
| Temple Street night food tour, cheapest bookable option today | HK$906.67 | ≈ US$113 |
| Total | HK$911.67 | ≈ US$113 |
On your own
Cross by Star Ferry, walk the Avenue of Stars, and pick your own stalls and dai pai dongs on Temple Street.

Day 3: Lantau Island and the Big Buddha, about HK$850

Lantau Island is a separate outing, reached by its own cable car rather than a stop along the way to somewhere else.
The Ngong Ping 360 cable car covers the ride; admission to the Big Buddha’s base and Po Lin Monastery’s grounds is free.
See or book the Big Buddha and Lantau tour
- Take the MTR Tung Chung Line to Tung Chung, then the Ngong Ping 360 cable car up to Ngong Ping Village.
- Climb the 268 steps to the Big Buddha’s base — free, though entering the halls underneath needs a separate ticket.
- Walk to Po Lin Monastery on the same grounds, then head back down by cable car or bus.
- Book the guided Big Buddha and Lantau tour instead if you’d rather add Tai O fishing village to the same day.
- Check for weather delays before you go — the cable car has suspended boarding during lightning and heavy rain before.
Good to know
- The cable car opens 10am on weekdays and 9am on weekends and public holidays — arrive by opening to beat the queues.
- Standard Cabin round-trip tickets run HK$295 per adult; time-limited promotions can show a lower checkout price on a given day.
- The 2019 rain closure lifted once conditions cleared — a real example of what a weather disruption looks like, not a guess.
| Item | HK$ per adult | US$ |
|---|---|---|
| Ngong Ping 360 Standard Cabin, round trip | HK$295 | ≈ US$37 |
| Big Buddha and Lantau tour, cheapest bookable option today | HK$550 | ≈ US$68 |
| Total | HK$845 | ≈ US$105 |
On your own
Ride the cable car up, climb the steps to the Buddha and walk the monastery grounds at your own pace.

If you have two days
Keep Day 1 as written. On Day 2, cross by Star Ferry, walk the Avenue of Stars and see Temple Street after dark — but drop Lantau Island entirely rather than rush the cable car and the steps.
- Day 1: as written — Victoria Peak, then Old Town Central once the escalator turns uphill.
- Day 2: Star Ferry crossing, the Avenue of Stars, and Temple Street after dark.
- Drop Lantau Island and the Big Buddha entirely — the cable car and the steps both take real time.
If you have a fourth day
A fourth day adds a full day at a theme park — Hong Kong Disneyland or Ocean Park. It is a different register of day from the harbourside, heritage and outlying-island days already covered.
Good to know
- Ocean Park’s General Admission is a flat HK$538 per adult, valid 180 days from purchase.
- Hong Kong Disneyland instead prices each one-day ticket on a four-tier calendar tied to the visit date, so check the tier before booking.
- Either park is a full-day commitment on its own — it doesn’t pair with another half-day activity.
Facts that shape the trip
Weather and timing, not weekday closures, are what actually change the plan in Hong Kong.
Good to know
- Sky Terrace 428 closes immediately under a Black Rainstorm Warning or Typhoon Signal No. 8; the Peak Tram can be suspended too.
- The Central-Mid-Levels Escalator only runs one direction at a time: downhill 6am-10am, uphill 10am-midnight.
- Ngong Ping 360 has suspended boarding during past storms — the cable car is the one weather-sensitive link to Lantau.
- Star Ferry fares step up on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays versus weekdays, on both decks.

Where a guided tour earns its money, and where it does not
A guide earns its place at the Peak Tram, skipping the queue, and on the Lantau tour if you want Tai O added in. Skip it for the free Avenue of Stars, the escalator and a self-guided Temple Street.
Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.
Questions people ask
How many days does Hong Kong really need?
Two covers Hong Kong Island and one Kowloon day; three adds a dedicated Lantau Island day; four adds a theme park day on top.
Does the Peak Tram close in bad weather?
Yes — a Black Rainstorm Warning or Typhoon Signal No. 8 closes Sky Terrace 428 immediately and can suspend the Peak Tram itself.
Which way does the Central-Mid-Levels Escalator run?
Downhill from 6am to 10am, then uphill from 10am to midnight, every day — plan a Central walk around that switch.
Is Temple Street Night Market open in the afternoon?
Some stalls are still setting up — the Tourism Board’s own description says the market comes alive after dark, not in daylight.
Do I need to book the Ngong Ping 360 cable car ahead?
Not to ride it, but arriving by opening (10am weekdays, 9am weekends) beats the queues, and a guided Lantau tour needs its own advance booking.
