A free day, in order

This is the free Central-to-Kowloon loop we’d walk ourselves: an escalator, a temple, a harbour crossing and a garden, threaded around opening hours.

  1. Ride the free Central–Mid-Levels Escalator downhill before 10am, then walk to Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road.
  2. Walk down to the Central Star Ferry pier and cross to Tsim Sha Tsui.
  3. Follow the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade to the Avenue of Stars for the free harbour view.
  4. Take the MTR to Diamond Hill for Chi Lin Nunnery, open until 4:30pm, then cross the footbridge to Nan Lian Garden.

Old Town Central costs nothing to explore: the world’s longest outdoor covered escalator and one of the city’s oldest temples sit minutes apart.

Good to know

  • Central–Mid-Levels Escalator: free, runs downhill 6am–10am, then uphill 10am until midnight; it does not reach The Peak.
  • Man Mo Temple: free entry, open 8am–6pm daily, built 1847 and known for its giant hanging incense coils.

A free viewpoint and a free trail

Two of Hong Kong’s best views cost nothing: a lookout road that circles part of The Peak, and a ridge trail that ends at a beach.

Good to know

  • Lugard Road Lookout: free, about a 20-minute walk from Peak Tower, wide views over the skyline and harbour with no ticket.
  • Dragon's Back: free public trail across Shek O Peak, about 8km and 4 hours from To Tei Wan to Big Wave Bay, rated moderate.

The Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, free to walk

The Avenue of Stars promenade is free to walk, and the harbour light show is back, though the weather can still cancel it on the night.

Good to know

  • Avenue of Stars: free, a 400-metre public promenade with film-industry plaques and a harbour view.
  • The nightly Symphony of Lights show resumed on 21 September 2026. Typhoon Signal 3 or above, or a Red or Black Rainstorm warning, issued from 3pm cancels that night’s show.

Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden

A Tang-dynasty-style temple built without a single nail, and the classical garden beside it, are both free and open long hours.

Good to know

  • Chi Lin Nunnery: free, Diamond Hill, a working Buddhist complex; keep quiet and skip photos inside the halls.
  • Nan Lian Garden: free, connected by a footbridge, open far later than the nunnery next door.

Nearly free, and worth it

A harbour crossing and a set of museums cost close to nothing, and one museum rule is worth knowing before you plan a visit around Wednesday.

Good to know

  • Star Ferry, Central–Tsim Sha Tsui: the lower deck is cheaper than the upper deck, and both cost less on weekdays than on weekends.
  • Most LCSD museums (Art, History, Heritage) are free every day; only the Science and Space museums charge, and only outside Wednesday.

Free versus paid: our verdicts

Two decisions come up on almost every Hong Kong itinerary, and the free version is the right call more often than not.

The free Star Ferry crossing, versus a paid Victoria Harbour night cruise

The ferry gives the same crossing and skyline; pay only for a longer loop with drinks and commentary.

The free Lugard Road Lookout, versus the paid Peak Tram and Sky Terrace 428

Lugard Road’s view costs nothing and needs no ticket; pay only to ride the funicular and stand on the indoor deck.

When paying is worth it: HK$340

Pay once, for the funicular ride and Sky Terrace 428's indoor deck; Lugard Road's free view is nearly as wide but skips the tram.

Skip the Sky-Terrace-only ticket if the ride is the point; it saves little over the round trip and cuts the funicular out entirely.

Good to know

  • Peak Tram round trip and Sky Terrace 428: our reviewed option, from HK$340, free to cancel up to 24 hours ahead.
  • Sky Terrace 428 only, no Peak Tram ride: our reviewed option, a cheaper alternative if the deck alone is the goal.

Spend on the Peak Tram and Sky Terrace 428 if riding the funicular matters, and on a harbour cruise for a longer loop with drinks. Everything else here, the Escalator, Man Mo Temple, Lugard Road, Dragon’s Back, the Avenue of Stars, Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden, stays free.

Questions people ask

Is the Central–Mid-Levels Escalator really free?

Yes, always. It runs downhill in the early morning and uphill the rest of the day, and it does not reach The Peak.

Is the Symphony of Lights show still happening?

Yes. Hong Kong’s Tourism Commission resumed the nightly harbour show on 21 September 2026 after a suspension. Typhoon Signal 3 or above, or a Red or Black Rainstorm warning, issued at or after 3pm cancels that day’s show.

Are Hong Kong’s museums free on Wednesdays?

Only two of them charge at all: the Science Museum and the Space Museum, and both go free on Wednesdays. The Museum of Art, Museum of History and Heritage Museum are free every day.

Is the Star Ferry worth taking if I could walk or use the MTR instead?

Yes; it’s one of the cheapest harbour crossings around, and the lower deck costs less than the upper deck on any day of the week.

Do I need to pay to hike Dragon's Back?

No, it is a free public trail in a country park; the only cost is getting to the trailhead and home from the beach.
