CHOOSE THE TRIP BEFORE THE TICKET

Where do you want to spend your time?

Start with the experience you want most. These areas offer different reasons to travel; you do not need to fit them all into one itinerary.

The Seine and Pont Neuf in central Paris

Art, monuments & river views

Paris

Choose Paris when museums and major monuments are the centre of your trip. Give one interior visit room in the day instead of treating every ticket as another stop.

Before you book
A Versailles outing is a separate commitment; compare the meeting point and transport before adding it.

Nice coastline and the Promenade des Anglais seen from Castle Hill

Coast & Riviera villages

Nice

Use Nice as the starting point for a Riviera-focused stay. Compare a coastal outing with an inland village trip according to the scenery you want.

Before you book
Check where the tour starts and how much time is spent travelling versus exploring each stop.

Place de la Bourse, a tram and their reflections in Bordeaux at night

Wine country & city walks

Bordeaux

Choose Bordeaux when wine is a main interest. A guided vineyard outing and time in the city solve different parts of the trip; leave room for both if they matter to you.

Before you book
Check which wine area is visited, tasting inclusions and the return point. A wine tour is not automatically a city tour.

Lyon rooftops and the Saône river

Food & historic streets

Lyon

Choose Lyon for a trip shaped by food and the old city. A guided walk can give the streets context; a food experience should fit the kind of meal or tasting you actually want.

Before you book
Read the tasting list and dietary arrangements rather than assuming every food tour includes a full meal.

The chalk cliffs and natural arch at Étretat in Normandy

D-Day history & coastal places

Normandy

Choose Normandy when the landing beaches and their history deserve a dedicated part of the trip. Select the sites that matter to you before comparing tour itineraries.

Before you book
A Normandy listing may start in Bayeux or elsewhere in the region. It does not necessarily include transport from Paris.

The hilltop village of Gordes in Provence

Historic towns & countryside

Provence

Choose Provence for time around towns such as Avignon and Aix-en-Provence and the surrounding countryside. Pick the base first, then compare outings nearby.

Before you book
A regional tour may leave from a different town from your hotel. Seasonal landscapes need current checks before they become the reason to book.

Paris is the capital; French is the official language and the euro is the currency. This guide concentrates on mainland France. Its six discovery areas are travel bases and regions, not a complete list of France’s administrative regions.

102 million international tourists in 2025

Atout France’s 2025 national report records 102 million international tourists, up from 100 million in 2024. This measures tourism volume; it is not a count of unique people or a satisfaction score, and it does not describe the crowds at every stop.

Build a route around overnight bases

Our starting recommendation is Paris plus one contrasting region for a short first trip. The Paris–Lyon–Avignon–Nice rail corridor supports a longer journey south; the Bordeaux route is a different direction. Choose a coherent route before adding individual sights.

Sources →

A city base can unlock the countryside

Bordeaux’s tourism office lists vineyard visits using organised excursions and public transport. We would compare the estate, tasting and last connection before hiring a car for the whole stay. A rail station near a wine village is not necessarily the entrance to your chosen winery.

History needs a narrower focus

Normandy’s landing beaches are distinct places with different stories. For a history-focused stay, we recommend choosing the sectors you want to understand and then a departure base, rather than treating every Normandy listing as the same excursion.

Sources →

Choose the southern experience first

Avignon is our choice for a heritage base with a countryside outing; Nice suits a coastal finish with city time. These are different trips: compare the excursion’s actual meeting point before booking something labelled Provence or French Riviera.

56 World Heritage properties, including the D-Day beaches

UNESCO lists 56 World Heritage properties for France: 47 cultural, 7 natural and 2 mixed. The Beaches of the D-Day Landings in Normandy were added in 2026. Bordeaux, the historic site of Lyon, the centre of Avignon and Nice are all on the list.

Fingerprints and a photo replace the passport stamp

The EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 and replaces passport stamps. At the external border it registers a non-EU short-stay traveller’s fingerprints, facial image and the date and place of entry and exit.

Luxembourg Palace and gardens in Paris

7 days: Paris and a guided journey west

For a first visit that combines independent Paris time with an organised three-day excursion. Stay three nights in Paris, two on the guided trip and one final night in Paris.

  1. Day 1 · Paris: arrive, settle into your accommodation and take an unhurried neighbourhood walk. Keep the first evening free of a prepaid timed visit.
  2. Days 2–3 · Paris: give one day to your chosen museum and nearby streets, and the other to a landmark visit and the Seine. Place the main reservation first; keep the rest flexible around its opening arrangements.
  3. Days 4–6 · Guided excursion from Paris: compare the three-day Normandy, Saint-Malo, Mont-Saint-Michel and Loire route below. It returns to Paris and supplies the transport for this part of the plan. Confirm its departure calendar before fixing your Paris accommodation.
  4. Day 7 · Paris: use the final morning for a short local outing or your onward journey. We recommend the night back in Paris rather than a flight immediately after the excursion’s return.

The trade-off
The organised section moves frequently and gives less time at each stop than a dedicated Normandy stay. Choose this for variety and arranged transport; choose a single regional base if slow museum visits or detailed D-Day history matter more.

What Paris costs: One Day in Paris: Can You Do It for €85? → · Paris in 3 Days for €200? A Plan by Area →

Matches days 4–6 only. The seven-day plan is our suggested combination; Paris accommodation, Paris activities and your arrival/departure travel are separate. Reconfirm current stops, hotel arrangements and dates on the listing.

Pont Saint-Bénézet and the historic skyline of Avignon

14 days: Paris, Lyon, Provence and the Riviera

For travellers who want museums, regional food and a coastal finish. Use four bases: Paris for four nights, Lyon for three, Avignon for three and Nice for three.

  1. Days 1–4 · Paris: allow an arrival day, two days built around your preferred major visits and one slower neighbourhood or garden day. Avoid filling every morning with a separate meeting point.
  2. Days 5–7 · Lyon: take the Paris–Lyon train on day 5 and leave time to check in. Use the following days for the old town, a walking visit and a Lyonnais meal; reserve the restaurant that matters to you instead of relying on a tightly timed transfer day.
  3. Days 8–10 · Avignon: move from Lyon on day 8. Give one full day to Avignon’s heritage and another to a countryside excursion with a verified Avignon departure. Check whether your train uses Avignon TGV or Avignon Centre and allow for the local connection.
  4. Days 11–14 · Nice: travel from Avignon on day 11. Spend one full day enjoying the city and coast, then choose a single Riviera outing or another local day. Keep day 14 for your onward journey; any return to Paris needs its own train and airport buffer.

The trade-off
Bordeaux and Normandy are not on this route. Four accommodation bases already create three moving days; reducing the trip to two or three bases is a better fit for travellers who prefer a slower pace.

Saint-Émilion rooftops and surrounding landscape near Bordeaux

21 days: history, wine and a journey south

For a broader mainland trip with deliberate travel days. Plan four nights in Paris, three in Bayeux, one back in Paris, four in Bordeaux, three in Lyon, three in Avignon and two in Nice.

  1. Days 1–4 · Paris: start with your principal museum and landmark choices, leaving an arrival day and space for a neighbourhood afternoon. Avoid using this opening stay as a base for distant daily excursions.
  2. Days 5–7 · Bayeux: travel from Paris on day 5. Use the next two days for the landing sectors and museums that interest you, with excursions starting from Bayeux or another explicitly checked meeting point. Do not add Mont-Saint-Michel automatically; it needs a separate transport plan.
  3. Day 8 · Paris: return from Bayeux and stay overnight. This deliberate pause separates the Normandy trip from the move southwest, rather than relying on a tight cross-Paris rail connection.
  4. Days 9–12 · Bordeaux: travel from Paris on day 9. Divide the full days between the city, a Saint-Émilion village and vineyard outing, and a flexible day for another tasting or a slower city visit. Check the winery reservation and final transport connection before choosing a self-guided trip.
  5. Days 13–15 · Lyon: reserve day 13 for Bordeaux–Lyon travel. Compare the whole rail itinerary, including any change between Paris stations; do not book an arrival-day tour. Use days 14–15 for heritage, food and a relaxed meal.
  6. Days 16–18 · Avignon: move south on day 16, visit Avignon on day 17 and choose one countryside outing on day 18. A village excursion should name its departure point and return time before you book it.
  7. Days 19–21 · Nice: take the Avignon–Nice train on day 19, keep day 20 for the coast or a local visit and day 21 for onward travel. Add nights here if beach time is a priority; this version offers a taste of the Riviera.

The trade-off
This is a varied journey with several hotel changes, not a claim to cover all of France. It leaves the Alps, much of Brittany and other regions aside. For fewer transfers, omit Normandy or Bordeaux and give those nights to the remaining bases.

Visitor perspectives

What visitors value about France

National context from Atout France’s report on its 2022 visitor study, published in 2023. These historical findings help frame our advice; they are not reviews of the activities above.

A strong experience, with a dated benchmark

Atout France’s report published in July 2023 put international visitors’ overall experience index at 222 for 2022, compared with a European benchmark of 214. These are TRAVELSAT index points, not percentages or a current star rating.

Sources →

Food, heritage and scenery stand out

The same 2022 study identified cuisine, historical heritage and landscapes among France’s strengths. Our recommendation is to pair a cultural base with a different regional experience, so the trip offers more than a sequence of landmark entrances.

Sources →

Value deserves a closer comparison

International visitors’ value-for-money index remained below the European benchmark in that study, despite improving since 2019. Our practical response: check what an activity actually includes (transport, entry, guiding and group format) before you book it.

Check the May holidays before fixing dates

France has four public holidays in May 2027: 1 May, Ascension on Thursday 6 May, 8 May and Whit Monday on 17 May. An employer may grant the Friday after Ascension as a bridge day. We would confirm opening days for markets, wineries and small museums that week.

Planning France activities: FAQs

Are France tours all departures from Paris?

No. France is the search area, not a shared meeting point. Check each product’s departure town, meeting point and return arrangements. A Normandy or Provence activity may begin locally; transport from Paris is included only when the product explicitly says so.

Does a France tour cover the whole country?

Not necessarily. The country results include individual tickets, local walks and day trips as well as longer experiences. If you want a multi-day trip, read the complete itinerary, overnight stops, accommodation and transport inclusions; the France label alone does not establish any of these.

Should I book activities before choosing where to stay?

For most flexible trips, choose the area first. If one specific activity is the reason you are travelling, check its start point and schedule before committing to a base. Our aim is to avoid an itinerary built around difficult connections between unrelated bookings.

How should I compare two wine or food tours?

Compare the places visited, tasting or meal inclusions, group format, transport and dietary arrangements. A similar title can describe very different experiences. Choose the format that fits your interests rather than using the number of stops as a measure of quality.

Can I browse France activities without choosing dates here?

Yes. Browse by destination or interest here, then choose and confirm the date on the booking platform. A displayed price is a starting price and does not confirm that your preferred date, language or option is available.

Which places should I combine on a first trip?

Our planning preference is a small number of bases with distinct experiences rather than a long list of famous places. Start with the museum, landscape, history or food you most want, then check realistic travel between the shortlisted bases before adding another.
