The loop

One walking loop covers the centre in about an hour of legs. Every tier follows it; only what you pay for at each stop changes.

  1. Start at Santa Maria Novella station and walk to Piazza del Duomo for the cathedral and the dome.
  2. Continue to Piazza della Repubblica, on the site of the old Roman forum, and pass under its monumental arch.
  3. Walk on to Piazza della Signoria: the Loggia dei Lanzi, the Fountain of Neptune and a copy of David stand beside Palazzo Vecchio.
  4. Cross Ponte Vecchio, then follow the Oltrarno streets to lively Piazza Santo Spirito.
  5. Climb to Piazzale Michelangelo, where the dome, Palazzo Vecchio, Santa Croce and Ponte Vecchio share one view.
  6. Take bus 13 from the terrace back to the station area.

OptionOur verdict
UffiziFree: the piazza and the Loggia dei Lanzi from outside. Mid and splurge: a reserved timed entry inside.
Oltrarno eveningFree: an aperitivo on your own budget. Splurge: a guided food and wine walk replaces it and the sunset terrace.
Cathedral, bridge, terraceIdentical on every tier: the cathedral is free to enter from Monday to Saturday, and the bridge and terrace are outdoors.

The free day buys no ticket. The cathedral needs none, the squares and the bridge are open-air, and the terrace view costs nothing. Only your own snacks and dinner add to the bill.

  1. Enter the cathedral between 10:15am and 3:45pm, Monday to Saturday, with shoulders and legs covered and no large bag.
  2. See the Loggia dei Lanzi, the open-air sculpture gallery on Piazza della Signoria, from the square itself.
  3. Cross Ponte Vecchio and look at the goldsmiths’ workshops built along it.
  4. Reach Piazzale Michelangelo in the last daylight hour, then take bus 13 back down.

Good to know

  • The cathedral interior is closed every Sunday and during religious celebrations; on a Sunday, admire the façade and the square.
  • Bus 13 can be diverted by roadworks, so allow extra time for the ride down.

Mid: about €45 for the Uffizi

Mid pays for one thing: a reserved timed entry to the Uffizi. It turns the walk into a museum morning and is the one upgrade that changes a single day most. Book the slot first and plan around it.

  1. Book the Uffizi for late morning or early afternoon, so the cathedral is open first: it admits visitors from 10:15am, Monday to Saturday.
  2. Walk from the station to the cathedral, then on through Piazza della Repubblica to Piazza della Signoria.
  3. Arrive at Piazzale degli Uffizi early and confirm the meeting point in your booking.
  4. After the museum, cross Ponte Vecchio and have a late lunch on the south bank.
  5. Finish at Piazzale Michelangelo for the view, then take bus 13 back to the station.

Good to know

  • The Uffizi is closed on Mondays, 1 January and 25 December. On a Monday, keep the free day, or add the food walk for a paid stop.
  • Some rooms can be closed for restoration or rearrangement, so the route through the collection may change.
  • Tickets are named, so book each one in the name of the person who will use it.

On your own

Best for one day: a reserved timed entry, then your own pace through the rooms.

With a guide

A small-group guided tour with entry adds context at a higher price; worth it if the paintings are new to you.

Splurge: about €160 with an Oltrarno food walk

Splurge keeps the Uffizi entry and adds a guided food and wine walk on the south bank. It replaces the self-guided dinner and the sunset terrace, so the day ends in the Oltrarno.

  1. Follow the mid-range morning: the cathedral, Piazza della Signoria and your Uffizi slot.
  2. After lunch, climb to Piazzale Michelangelo in daylight, then walk back down to the Oltrarno before the walk starts.
  3. Book the food walk for its afternoon departure and confirm the meeting point and start time on the listing.

Good to know

  • Leave the dome climb out: it needs its own booked slot of about 45 minutes, which would pin the day to two fixed times.
  • Check the listing for what the tastings and drinks cover before you skip a proper dinner.

On your own

A self-guided aperitivo in Piazza Santo Spirito costs less, needs no booked slot and keeps the sunset terrace.

With a guide

The walk is the splurge: a guide’s route through the Oltrarno’s food and wine stops, at a booked slot.

If you are on a layover

Florence Airport is close: tram T2 reaches the centre in about 20 minutes, every 5 minutes. The loop, not the ride, is the long part.

Good to know

  • Budget the tram both ways, about 40 minutes in all, before you add a single stop.
  • Under about six hours from landing, keep to the free centre and skip the timed Uffizi entry.
  • On a Sunday the cathedral interior is closed, so the free centre is outdoors only.

Where a guided tour earns its money in one day

The loop needs no guide for its free stops. A guide earns the most inside the Uffizi, where a small-group tour supplies the context, and on the south bank, where a food and wine walk beats choosing a trattoria alone.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Can I go into the cathedral on a Sunday?

No. The cathedral is closed to visitors every Sunday and during religious celebrations, so plan the interior for Monday to Saturday. The façade and the square stay open to see.

What if I arrive on a Monday?

The Uffizi is closed on Mondays. Follow the free day, add the food walk if you want a paid stop, and use the cathedral, which is open Monday to Saturday.

Does free cathedral entry include the dome?

No. The cathedral is entered without a ticket, but the dome is a separate climb with a booked slot on the first day of a pass. It is not worth stacking behind a timed Uffizi entry in one day.

Which upgrade changes the day most?

The Uffizi entry. Everything else on the loop is free or outdoors, so the museum is the one stop that adds something the free version cannot.

How do I get up to Piazzale Michelangelo?

Walk about 27 minutes from Piazza Santo Spirito, or take bus 13, which runs between the terrace and the station area.

How much of a layover does this loop need?

Budget the T2 tram both ways plus the walk into the centre. Under about six hours from landing, keep to the free centre.
