Which airport, when you get to choose

Usually your flight chooses. If both are on offer, take Florence for the 20-minute tram; pick Pisa only when its fare or timing saves more than the extra hour.

Good to know

  • Florence Airport is about 4 km out; Pisa is a separate city, so every Pisa route changes at Pisa Centrale or rides a coach.
  • Pisa is among Italy’s ten busiest airports, so it may carry the route or fare you want.
  • The tram and the train both reach Santa Maria Novella; the tram runs on to Piazza San Marco.
  • Landing at Pisa late can put you at Pisa Centrale after the last direct Florence train.

FLR: €2 by tram

Tram T2 is the default: the stop is a two-minute walk from arrivals and the ride takes about 20 minutes, with trams every 4 to 5 minutes on weekday daytimes. Mind the bag limits, because the tram has no luggage racks.

  1. Follow the tram signs to the Peretola Aeroporto stop, about two minutes on foot.
  2. Buy a ticket at the stop’s machine (cards accepted) or in the at-bus app, or tap a contactless card on board.
  3. Board T2 towards Piazza San Marco; it calls at Santa Maria Novella station.
  4. A carry-on bag rides free; a bigger bag needs an extra ticket, and nothing over 20 kg is allowed.

Good to know

  • One ticket lasts 90 minutes and also works on city buses.
  • Strikes and street works have shortened T2 before, so keep the taxi in mind as your fallback.
  • The taxi fare is fixed only for hotels and private addresses inside the central area on the tariff map.

On your own

The tram for a light bag and a stay near the station or San Marco; a taxi when the bag is heavy.

Pre-booked transfer

Costs more than the fixed-fare taxi; worth it for a driver at arrivals, a larger group or a price agreed before landing.

PSA: €16.30 by shuttle and train

Pisa has no direct train to Florence. The PisaMover shuttle takes about five minutes to Pisa Centrale, where regional trains reach Santa Maria Novella in roughly an hour to 1 hour 25 minutes, once or twice an hour.

  1. Follow signs to the PisaMover stop outside the terminal and buy a ticket from a machine there.
  2. Ride about five minutes to Pisa Centrale, then take the underground passages to the platforms.
  3. Board a regional train for Firenze Santa Maria Novella; the shuttle and train can be bought as one ticket.
  4. Or skip the change: a direct bus takes about 70 minutes and drops beside the station.

Good to know

  • The last direct train leaves Pisa Centrale around 22:30, while the shuttle runs to midnight, and to 1am from 1 June to 30 September.
  • Direct coaches also serve Florence; by day one operator stops at the Guidoni tram stop, so you finish by tram.

On your own

Shuttle and train suit a light bag and a daytime landing; leave margin for the change at Pisa Centrale.

Pre-booked transfer

The direct bus skips the change; a private car suits groups, heavy bags and late landings.

Late arrivals and luggage

Two cut-offs decide a late arrival. The last tram leaves Florence Airport at 23:58, or 01:15 on Friday and Saturday. Pisa’s last direct train leaves Pisa Centrale at about 22:30, well before the shuttle stops.

Good to know

  • The tram takes bags up to 20 kg and 80x45x25 cm, paying extra beyond one free bag. A full checked suitcase can exceed that.
  • After 23:30 the tram comes only about every 22 minutes, so a landing then means a wait; the night taxi fare is fixed, with bags extra.
  • The direct Pisa bus lets you bring one small and one large bag of up to 30 kg, and has a late-evening departure.

Florence, after the last tram or with a heavy bag

A fixed-fare taxi is simplest; a booked car adds a driver waiting at arrivals.

Pisa, after the last Florence train

The late direct bus or a private car booked ahead; the shuttle alone cannot reach Florence.

Airport transfers and day-one experiences worth booking

A driver at arrivals suits a late landing or a family with heavy bags. Florence’s big days sell timed slots, so booking tickets and transfers before you land keeps the first day simple; many options cancel free.
