Three days: the default plan

Three days works because each day owns one part of the city: Downtown’s towers, Old Dubai across the Creek, then the Marina coast. Only the Burj Khalifa deck needs a booked time; everything else is walk-up.

  1. Day 1: Downtown Dubai — Burj Khalifa’s observation deck, Dubai Mall, then a Dubai Fountain show.
  2. Day 2: Old Dubai — Al Fahidi’s lanes, an abra crossing, then the Gold and Spice Souks.
  3. Day 3: the coast — Dubai Marina’s promenade, then Palm Jumeirah or JBR Beach.
  4. Before you fly: book a timed Burj Khalifa “At the Top” slot; nothing else needs a reservation.
  5. Day order: run Day 2’s outdoor walk in the morning or evening from June to September, when midday highs top 40C.

Day 1: Downtown Dubai, about AED 180 in tickets

Day one runs on one ticket and one free show. Burj Khalifa’s observation decks need a timed slot; the Dubai Fountain, back in full swing since its October 2025 reopening, needs none.

  1. Book a timed “At the Top” slot for Levels 124–125 (456 metres), or upgrade to Level 148’s SKY terrace or the Lounge on Levels 152–154.
  2. Ride up, then browse Dubai Mall at street level afterward.
  3. Time an afternoon fountain show: 1:00 and 1:30pm Saturday to Thursday, 2:00 and 2:30pm Friday.
  4. Or catch an evening show, every 30 minutes from 6:00 to 11:00pm daily.
  5. Watch from the Waterfront Promenade, Burj Park or the Fountain Boardwalk.

Good to know

  • Each Burj Khalifa deck tier is a separate ticket; the operator’s own booking flow sets the price by date and time, checked 2026-09-14.
  • The Dubai Fountain is free to watch from the promenade, per operator Emaar.

Day 2: Old Dubai, across the Creek, about AED 65.64 in tickets

Day two is heritage on foot. Al Fahidi’s wind-tower lanes and the Gold and Spice Souks sit on opposite banks of Dubai Creek, linked by a short abra ride.

  1. Walk Al Fahidi’s lanes and courtyards, open daily 7:00am to 8:00pm.
  2. Walk to the Bur Dubai abra station and cross to Deira Old Souq for AED 1, cash only.
  3. Browse the Gold Souk and the adjoining Spice Souk, a short walk from the crossing.
  4. From June to September, do this walk in the morning or after sunset; midday highs regularly top 40C.
  5. Recross by abra for a Creek-side dinner in Bur Dubai.

Good to know

  • Al Fahidi is open daily, 7:00am–8:00pm, per Dubai Culture and Arts Authority.
  • The Bur Dubai–Deira abra runs 6:00am to midnight; a second Old Souq–Al Sabkha crossing runs 24 hours, per RTA.
  • The abra fare is AED 1 per passenger per trip, cash only, per RTA.

Day 3: the coast — Marina, Palm and JBR, about AED 110 in tickets

Day three trades towers for the waterfront. Dubai Marina’s walkway, Palm Jumeirah’s monorail and JBR’s beach sit along the same stretch of coast, best reached by taxi or the Metro’s Marina stations.

  1. Walk the Marina Walk promenade, almost 8 kilometres of waterfront, in the cooler morning or evening.
  2. Ride the Palm Monorail onto Palm Jumeirah for a beach club or the island’s observation deck.
  3. Or stay at JBR Beach, the public sandy stretch beside the Marina.
  4. Evening: a Marina-side dinner, or a dhow dinner cruise along the canal.

Good to know

  • Budget a Metro or taxi ride to reach the coast from Day 1’s Downtown base — the two areas sit too far apart to walk between.
  • Palm Jumeirah carries the Middle East’s first monorail, per developer Nakheel.
  • Same rule as Day 2’s souk walk: do the Marina promenade and JBR beach before the midday heat, not during it.

If you have two days

With two days, keep Day 1 as written. Fold Day 2 and Day 3 into one loop: Old Dubai in the morning, the coast in the evening.

  1. Day 1: as written — Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, the Fountain.
  2. Day 2 morning: Al Fahidi, the abra crossing, the Gold and Spice Souks.
  3. Day 2 afternoon: taxi or Metro to Dubai Marina for the promenade and JBR Beach.
  4. Drop Palm Jumeirah’s monorail; there is no room for a third area.

If you have a fourth day: about AED 1,100 for the desert

A fourth day is for the desert: a permitted-operator drive into the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, a 225-square-kilometre protected reserve with reintroduced Arabian oryx.

Good to know

  • Entry is only through a tour operator permitted by the reserve, not independently, per DDCR.
  • The reserve covers 225 square kilometres, 4.7% of Dubai’s land area, per DDCR.
  • The round trip fills half a day once hotel transfer time is included.
  • Morning drives avoid the worst summer heat; some operators run evening drives instead.

Facts that shape the trip

Two things decide the order above: summer heat and one booking. Reserve the Burj Khalifa deck slot, then build outdoor walking around the cooler hours from June to September.

Good to know

  • Dubai’s summer (June–August) averages highs of 39–41C with almost no rain, per the National Center of Meteorology.
  • RTA’s nol Red Ticket costs AED 4 within one zone, AED 6 across two zones, AED 8.50 beyond that; abras are paid separately, in cash.
  • The Dubai Metro’s Red and Green lines are fully automated, per RTA.
  • Al Maktoum International (DWC) is a different airport from Dubai International (DXB); check which one your flight uses.

Where a guided tour earns its money, and where it does not

A guide earns its place for access you can’t buy alone: the desert reserve’s permitted-only entry, a Creek-side abra route with context, or a bundled Burj Khalifa city tour. Skip it for the free Dubai Fountain and a self-timed deck ticket.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Do I need to book the Burj Khalifa deck ahead?

Yes, a timed “At the Top” slot for the level you choose; the Dubai Fountain right below it needs no ticket at all.

How do I cross Dubai Creek between Bur Dubai and Deira?

By traditional abra, a short cash-only ride between the two banks; RTA also runs a second crossing between Old Souq and Al Sabkha around the clock.

Is Dubai too hot to visit in summer?

Downtown’s towers and malls stay air-conditioned; save Old Dubai’s souk walk and any desert drive for the morning or evening, since midday highs regularly top 40C.

Can I visit the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve on my own?

No. Entry is only through a tour operator permitted by the reserve, unlike most of the rest of this plan.

Which airport will I land at?

Almost certainly Dubai International; Al Maktoum International currently handles cargo and only some scheduled passenger flights.

How many days does Dubai actually need?

Three covers Downtown, Old Dubai and the coast without doubling back; two works by merging the last two days, and a fourth adds the desert reserve.
