The route runs east to west, so the lake comes first and an ‘L’ station comes last. Every stop on it is free; the tiers below change only what you pay to go inside.

  1. Start at Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park. The fountain runs in season, typically early May to mid-October; the park is the start either way.
  2. Walk north to Millennium Park, 14 minutes. It is free and open daily from 6am to 11pm.
  3. Walk to the Michigan Avenue Bridge, 9 minutes from Cloud Gate. The cruise dock sits at 400 N Michigan Avenue, at the bridge’s north end.
  4. Follow the river west to Willis Tower, 26 minutes from the bridge. The Riverwalk is free and open daily from 6am to 11pm.
  5. Finish at Willis Tower, 3 minutes from Quincy station, where the Orange Line runs to Midway.

OptionOur verdict
Grant Park and Millennium ParkFree on every tier. The guided walk on the splurge day starts elsewhere, so skip Grant Park then.
Michigan Avenue BridgeFree to cross on every tier. Mid and splurge board the 90-minute cruise at the dock beside it.
The river to Willis TowerFree on every tier. The splurge day ends here with a Skydeck slot.
Art InstituteOff the route: it is 7 minutes from Cloud Gate but takes a half day. Swap it for the cruise.

Free

The free day buys no ticket. The park, the river and the streets are the sights, and one ‘L’ ride to close the day is the only fare.

  1. Walk the route above without booking anything. Nothing on it needs a ticket or a time slot.
  2. Stop on the Riverwalk for lunch or a drink; it stays open until 11pm.
  3. Close the day with one ‘L’ ride from Quincy. A transfer is free within two hours, up to two of them.

Good to know

  • The ‘L’ costs US$2.50 a ride and a bus US$2.25, paid by Ventra or contactless card. A 1-day pass costs US$5, so it pays off from the third ride.

On your own

Suits most travellers: the sights are outdoors and free, and the whole route is 2.3 miles.

With a guide

A guide adds stories, not access. The splurge tier below prices one that also feeds you.

Mid: about US$50 with the river cruise

Mid adds one ticket, the 90-minute cruise at the bridge, between Millennium Park and the river walk. It is the paid stop that names the buildings you walk past.

  1. Book a slot for after your Millennium Park hour, and arrive 30 minutes early: boarding starts about 15 minutes before departure.
  2. Board at the dock at 400 N Michigan Avenue, on the north side of the bridge.
  3. Afterwards cross back and follow the river west to Willis Tower, 26 minutes on foot.

Good to know

  • The boats are climate-controlled and depart rain or shine, so the cruise doubles as the wet-weather anchor.
  • A full refund needs cancelling at least 24 hours before departure.

On your own

Walking the Riverwalk shows the river; the boat adds a guide and the view from the water.

With a guide

The cruise is the guided part. A walking tour on top of it is optional, not needed.

Splurge: about US$95 plus a guide

Splurge trades the self-guided morning for a small-group food walk, keeps the cruise and ends on the Skydeck. The guide is the biggest single cost.

  1. Book the walking tour first and fit the rest around its morning start. The listing names the Chicago Theatre as the meeting point.
  2. The listing says food tastings are included and the walk ends in River North; confirm both before you book.
  3. From River North the cruise dock is about 13 minutes on foot. Book the cruise for mid-afternoon.
  4. After the cruise, cross back and follow the river to Willis Tower, 26 minutes on foot.
  5. Book a Skydeck slot for the last light, and choose the time with the sunset in mind.

Good to know

  • Skydeck is open 365 days a year, so any day of the week works for the finish. Book its slot when you book the walk.
  • Skydeck advises arriving at least 30 minutes before sunset to see it.

Worth it once, on a first morning: small groups of up to 12, with food built in.

If you are on a layover

With about six hours from landing, keep to the first half of the route: Millennium Park and the bridge. The airport ride is the fixed cost, and it is 25 to 45 minutes each way.

Good to know

  • O’Hare’s Blue Line runs 24 hours a day and takes 40 to 45 minutes to downtown. Allow up to ten minutes from baggage claim to the station.
  • Midway’s Orange Line takes 20 to 25 minutes and runs all day. The N62 Archer bus covers its overnight gap.
  • Planned work changes Blue Line timetables at times, so leave extra margin on the way back.

Where paying earns its money in one day

A guide earns its price at the start and on the water: the food walk turns the route into a story, and the cruise turns the towers into names. The rest of the day is free to walk.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Which day of the week should I choose?

Any day works for the route itself. Only the Art Institute cares: it closes on Tuesdays and stays open to 8pm on Thursdays, which matters only if you swap it in for the cruise.

Cruise or Skydeck, if I can pay for only one?

The cruise, for most travellers: it explains the buildings you walk past and sails in any weather. Choose the Skydeck when the sky is clear and you want the city from above.

Can I fit the Art Institute in as well?

Only by dropping the cruise. The museum takes about half a day and closes on Tuesdays, so it replaces the boat rather than joining the route.

How late can the day run?

Millennium Park and the Riverwalk stay open until 11pm, and the Blue Line runs around the clock. The Orange Line has an overnight gap that a night bus covers.

How much of this fits a layover?

With about six hours from landing, do Millennium Park and the bridge and leave the cruise and deck for a longer stay. Leave extra margin for the ride back to the airport.
