Find your Chicago experience

A free day, in order
This free day runs from Lincoln Park south to the Loop. Every stop costs nothing to enter, and the only bill is a bus fare.
- Start at Lincoln Park Zoo, free every day with no reservation, then walk to the Lily Pool beside the conservatory.
- Book a free timed ticket for Lincoln Park Conservatory; it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
- Ride the 151 or 156 bus south from the conservatory; both run to Union Station.
- Reach the Chicago Cultural Center before it closes at 5pm to see its domes; free tours run Thursdays and Fridays at 1:15pm.
- Walk on to Millennium Park, open until 11pm, and check that Lurie Garden is open before you count on it.
- End on the Riverwalk, open from 6am to 11pm, for the river and the towers.
Lincoln Park: zoo, glasshouse and lily pool
Lincoln Park holds the best free half day in Chicago. Only its glasshouse asks you to plan ahead.
Good to know
- Lincoln Park Zoo is open every day of the year, free with no reservation. Its own lot costs US$35 to US$45 a day, so take the bus.
- Lincoln Park Conservatory is free with a timed ticket and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. A donation of US$10 per adult is suggested.
- The Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, a National Historic Landmark garden, is free and open daily from spring to late autumn.
- The 151 and 156 buses stop at Fullerton Parkway and Stockton Drive, beside the conservatory and the Lily Pool.
The Loop: park, domes and river
The Loop’s free stops sit close together. Each has an hour or a season that decides when to go.
Good to know
- Chicago Cultural Center: free, open daily 10am to 5pm and closed on holidays; free tours run Thursdays and Fridays at 1:15pm.
- Millennium Park: open 6am to 11pm. Crown Fountain runs only in the warm months, and Lurie Garden closes for repairs at times.
- Millennium Park after 6pm from Friday to Sunday: anyone under 18 needs an adult aged 21 or older with them.
- Chicago Riverwalk: 1.25 miles from Lake Street to the lakefront, open 6am to 11pm.
Trails and the pier

A lakeside trail, an elevated path and a pier cost nothing to enter. Each has one catch.
Good to know
- Lakefront Trail: 18 miles from Ardmore Avenue to 71st Street. Repair work can close a section, so follow the signed detours.
- The 606: an elevated trail, the Bloomingdale Trail, open every day from 6am to 11pm and linked to four neighbourhood parks.
- Navy Pier: no admission fee, but rides and other attractions inside charge. It closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas, and under-18s need an escort after 5pm Friday to Sunday.
Museums: who really gets in free
Chicago’s major museums charge visitors; their free days are for Illinois residents. Only two places in the table are free for everyone.
| Who enters free | The catch | |
|---|---|---|
| National Museum of Mexican Art | Everyone, always | Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm |
| Chicago Cultural Center | Everyone, always | Closed on holidays |
| MCA Chicago | Illinois residents, Tuesday 5pm to 9pm; anyone 18 and under | Other adults pay |
| Field Museum | Illinois residents, scheduled Wednesdays | Everyone else pays |
| Adler Planetarium | Illinois residents, set free days | Everyone else pays |
| Art Institute of Chicago | Children under 14; Chicago teens under 18 | Adults pay; closed Tuesdays |
Nearly free, and worth it
A free day still has small bills. A bus or L ride costs a few dollars, and parking at the zoo costs far more.
Good to know
- Contactless bank cards, phone wallets and Ventra cards pay the fare, and a paid ride includes up to two more rides within two hours.
- A 1-Day pass runs 24 hours from first use on CTA and Pace, so it pays off from the third ride.
| Item | US$ each | € |
|---|---|---|
| Bus ride | US$2.25 | ≈ €2 |
| L train ride, not from O’Hare | US$2.50 | ≈ €2 |
| 1-Day CTA and Pace pass | US$5 | ≈ €5 |
| 3-Day CTA and Pace pass | US$15 | ≈ €14 |
| Lincoln Park Conservatory, suggested donation per adult | US$10 | ≈ €9 |
Free versus paid: our verdicts
Free covers most of Chicago. Pay only when a guide adds what the free version cannot: commentary from the water, a route inside the Loop, or a set ride.
See or book a Chicago River architecture cruise
| Option | Our verdict |
|---|---|
| The Riverwalk on foot, versus an architecture cruise | The Riverwalk is free and shows the towers from the bank. Book a cruise only if you want a guide on the water. |
| The Cultural Center’s free tours, versus a Loop interiors walk | The free tours run two afternoons a week. Book a walk when those days do not fit or you want more buildings. |
| The Lakefront Trail on foot, versus a guided bike tour | The trail is free, but sections can close for repairs. Book a ride only for a guide, a set route and a bike provided. |
When paying is worth it: from US$35
Pay when the guide is the point: someone who explains Loop buildings on a fixed route, or leads a ride along the lakefront. Everything else here stays free.

Where paying is worth it, and where it is not
Spend where a guide changes what you learn: the river from a boat, the Loop’s interiors on foot, the lakefront by bike. The zoo, Millennium Park and the Riverwalk stay free.

Questions people ask
Is Lincoln Park Zoo really free?
Yes. Entry is free every day of the year and needs no reservation. Only parking, food and extras cost money, so ride the bus if you can.

Yes, a free timed-entry ticket. The conservatory is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan around those days.
