Five ticketed sights, five separate charges

Cancún has no single ticket to its Maya past. Each place is admitted on its own charge, one of them carries a second charge set by a state government, and only one admission opens a second site.

OptionOur verdict
Museo Maya de CancúnGalleries at Kukulcán kilometre 16.5, and the same admission opens the San Miguelito ruins behind them. Shut on Mondays.
El ReyA smaller Maya site two kilometres further south, admitted on its own charge and open every day of the week.
MUSAUnderwater sculpture reached only by boat, so what you buy is a snorkel trip rather than an admission.
Chichén ItzáInland in Yucatán, with a state charge on top of the archaeology admission and the earliest closing time here.
TulumSouth down the coast highway, admitted separately, and closed to new visitors ninety minutes before it shuts.

One admission covers two places, and no more

We sell no pass across these sites, and each one is confirmed on its own. The museum admission is the single exception, and it is a rule about scope rather than a discount.

Good to know

  • A Museo Maya visit includes the San Miguelito archaeological site behind the galleries, so one admission covers both.
  • Chichén Itzá is the opposite case: an extraordinary Yucatán state fee is payable on top of the archaeology admission.
  • The park packages sold along this coast combine park days, not archaeological sites, so they answer a different question.
  • A guided circuit with admission included is a different purchase from a ticket, and it sits on the Tours page.

The order the closing times force

The museum shuts one day a week and stops admitting in the late afternoon, so it sets the order. El Rey stays open a little later and absorbs whatever time is left.

  1. Choose any day except Monday, when the museum and San Miguelito are both closed.
  2. Start at Museo Maya de Cancún on Kukulcán Boulevard kilometre 16.5, which opens at 9 in the morning.
  3. Walk out to the San Miguelito site behind the galleries on the same admission; its last entry is 4:30 in the afternoon.
  4. Carry on to El Rey at kilometre 18 and pay its own admission, with last entry there also at 4:30.
  5. Leave Chichén Itzá, Tulum and the parks out of this day; each one is a long road journey of its own.

Good to know

  • The Scenic Tower at El Embarcadero, Kukulcán kilometre 4, is closed for maintenance works.
  • Neither Hotel Zone site lets you bring food in, and professional camera equipment carries an extra charge.
  • Mexican citizens and residents enter the museum free on Sundays.

Opening hours and the days that are lost

Last entry, not closing time, is what ends a visit. Chichén Itzá closes earliest of these, and Tulum stops admitting ninety minutes before it closes.

Good to know

  • San Miguelito stops admitting visitors at 4:30 in the afternoon, earlier than the galleries beside it.
  • Tulum takes its last visitors at 3:30 in the afternoon, ninety minutes before it closes.
  • Chichén Itzá runs its audio and light show on Wednesday to Sunday evenings, after the site itself has closed.

Two sites on one ticket: about US$30

The museum ticket we sell is a dated admission with no guide and no transport. It can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours ahead.

Good to know

  • The museum publishes its admission at 105 pesos for national visitors and 210 pesos for foreign visitors.
  • El Rey is published at 80 pesos for national visitors and 145 pesos for foreign visitors, paid separately.
  • At Chichén Itzá a foreign adult pays 697 pesos in all, against 310 pesos for a Mexican national.
  • Our reviewed museum ticket is resold and can cost more than either published category, so read the total before paying.

The museum and San Miguelito come to about US$30 on one adult ticket; El Rey, meals and local transport are separate.

The two sights with no door to walk through

MUSA and Isla Mujeres are the two stops you cannot simply walk into. One is a boat trip you book, the other is a crossing with a published fare.

Good to know

  • The adult island fare is 290 pesos one way and 580 pesos return from all three Cancún piers.
  • At Playa Caracol the published fare leaves out the dock fee, which is paid at that pier.
  • The reviewed snorkel also charges its dock fee separately from the trip price.
OptionOur verdict
MUSA underwater museumThe sculptures sit below the surface, so a snorkel trip is the way in. The reviewed trip adds a shuttle.
Isla Mujeres by ferryA published adult fare from Puerto Juárez or either Hotel Zone pier, with no reservation needed.
Isla Mujeres by catamaranA scheduled sailing with lunch and snorkelling rather than a crossing; its dock tax is extra.

Where a real package exists, and what it commits you to

The one genuine multi-place product on this coast is a park package. It bundles two or more park days at a discount, and it is a firm commitment rather than a flexible pass.

Good to know

  • Without transport you have seven days from the first park visit to use the rest, one park a day.
  • With transport included that window is fifteen days, still one park a day.
  • Park packages are not cancellable and not refundable, so settle the dates before you pay.
  • Xplor runs Monday to Saturday, makes water shoes compulsory and wants a physical passport on arrival.

Check these before you pay

Two of these purchases are firm and one is not. Read the date, the pickup and the refund line together before you commit to anything.

Good to know

  • The reviewed museum ticket can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before the booked date.
  • Park packages carry no cancellation and no refund at all, so the dates are the decision.
  • Xplor asks for a physical passport on arrival, and water shoes are required for its activities.
  • Food and pets are not allowed inside the archaeological sites, and professional cameras carry an extra charge.

One afternoon, or a day of its own?

This page is about what each admission covers. Cancún’s guided circuits, boat days and park packages, with their own dates and pickups, are on the Tours page.

Questions people ask

Is there one ticket for all of Cancún’s Maya sites?

No. Each place is admitted on its own charge. The single exception is the museum admission, which also opens the San Miguelito ruins behind the galleries.

Which day should I keep clear of this plan?

Monday. Museo Maya and San Miguelito are both closed, which leaves only El Rey and turns the afternoon into a short walk.

Why is Chichén Itzá charged twice?

A separate fee set by the Yucatán state government is payable on top of the archaeology admission. Our reviewed circuit lists that site tax among its inclusions.

Can I add Tulum to the Cancún ticket afternoon?

No. Tulum is a long drive south on the coast highway and stops admitting visitors at 3:30 in the afternoon, so it needs a day of its own.

Can I walk in to see MUSA?

No. The sculptures are underwater, so the way in is a snorkel trip. The reviewed Cancún trip includes a shuttle, and its dock fee is charged separately.

Does a park package cover the Maya sites?

No. A package combines park days, one park a day, within seven days of the first visit. It also cannot be cancelled, so set the dates before you pay.
