Cancún travel guide

Cancún

Give Cancún a shore day, a separate Maya-history stop and one deliberately chosen water outing; the peninsula is larger than the Hotel Zone.

Plan Cancún by time and budget

Top experiences

Top experiences in Cancún

Palapas and Caribbean surf at Playa Delfines

Playa Delfines

The municipality identifies Playa Delfines as a free public beach in the Hotel Zone.

Best for: Visitors wanting a sea-facing day without paying for a beach club · Area: Hotel Zone kilometre 17

Plan for A beautiful view is not a promise of safe swimming on a given day.

A carved Maya stone exhibit in Museo Maya de Cancún

Museo Maya and San Miguelito

The museum admission includes the adjacent San Miguelito archaeological zone.

Best for: Visitors who want archaeology with indoor context and an outdoor site · Area: Hotel Zone kilometre 16.5

Plan for The site has a separate timetable from El Rey and is closed on Mondays under the current listing.

Low Maya ruins and palms at El Rey in the Hotel Zone

El Rey ruins

The independent El Rey site is listed by INAH at Hotel Zone kilometre 18.

Best for: Visitors who want a short Maya site visit near the southern shore · Area: Hotel Zone kilometre 18

Plan for Its admission and hours must be checked independently from San Miguelito.

Submerged sculpture at the underwater museum near Cancún

MUSA underwater galleries

MUSA identifies Punta Nizuc and Manchones as distinct underwater areas.

Best for: Snorkelers or divers choosing a specific sculpture gallery · Area: Off the Cancún–Isla Mujeres coast

Plan for A glass-bottom boat and a dive reveal different work; conditions can change access.

Laguna Nichupté on the inland side of Cancún’s Hotel Zone

Nichupté lagoon side

The Hotel Zone is bordered by the Caribbean on one side and Nichupté Lagoon on the other.

Best for: Visitors seeking a different water perspective from the surf beaches · Area: Inland side of Hotel Zone

Plan for A lagoon boat cannot substitute for an offshore reef or island day.

An evening public performance in Parque de las Palapas

Parque de las Palapas

The municipality uses the central public park for performances and food events.

Best for: Visitors wanting to see the downtown side of Cancún · Area: Downtown Cancún

Plan for Programme and stall presence change, so a specific event needs a current check.

Aerial view of Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres and Playa Norte

Isla Mujeres is a separate island reached by ferry from the Cancún side.

Best for: Visitors who want one island day at their own pace · Area: Across from Puerto Juárez

Plan for A cruise stop can leave less time ashore than a self-directed ferry day.

Coral and reef fish in the waters off Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos reef

CONANP manages a reef national park off Puerto Morelos south of Cancún.

Best for: Visitors prioritising guided reef snorkeling · Area: Puerto Morelos, outside Cancún city

Plan for It is not a Hotel Zone beach stop, and weather can change water access.

El Castillo pyramid at Chichén Itzá

Chichén Itzá

INAH lists Chichén Itzá in Yucatán with a separate state fee alongside its admission.

Best for: Visitors willing to devote a full regional day to Maya heritage · Area: Yucatán, beyond Cancún

Plan for The long return replaces an island or local beach day.

Give the shore and one excursion different days

One day in the Hotel Zone

Choose Playa Delfines and either Museo Maya or El Rey.

Compare the two local heritage visits by the galleries or open-air site you actually want.

The trade-off Trying to reach Isla Mujeres reduces time for both shore and archaeology.

Three days with a water outing

Keep one local shore-and-museum day, one ferry or reef day and one flexible coast or downtown day.

A Puerto Juárez ferry is different from a catamaran itinerary.

The trade-off Weather can move the water day and change the remaining plan.

Four days with a regional excursion

Add Chichén Itzá as a full road day only when its archaeology is a trip priority.

Check both fee components and the actual pickup point.

The trade-off A long return displaces another island or local beach day.

Choose the return journey you will repeat

Hotel Zone for repeat coast time

Stay on the coast when the beach and water departures are the daily rhythm.

Read the exact address against southern sites and the island ferry terminal.

The trade-off Downtown dinners then need transport.

Downtown for local evenings

Choose the centre for Parque de las Palapas and urban food stops.

Build each shore visit as a separate journey.

The trade-off The room will not be beside the Caribbean beach.

Puerto Juárez for an island focus

Use a ferry-side base only when several Isla Mujeres crossings justify it.

Confirm the terminal on the ticket.

The trade-off A single island day rarely justifies giving up the Hotel Zone shore.

Use CUN, then identify the final leg

Cancún International Airport has ADO service from terminals 2, 3 and 4. Check where the actual bus ticket ends before assuming it reaches a Hotel Zone, Puerto Juárez or Costa Mujeres hotel.

The Hotel Zone, downtown and the Isla Mujeres ferry point are separate ground journeys. A tour pickup location should be checked against the real lodging address.

Best time to visit

Spring (March–May)

Build beach time around the current flags and keep one inland alternative.

Crowds
Varies by event and attraction

Notable events

  • Local public programmes at Parque de las Palapas vary by date; confirm the current municipal calendar.

Summer (June–August)

Allow a flexible day in case water conditions change.

Crowds
Varies by event and attraction

Notable events

  • Beach flags and marine conditions determine each day’s water plan.

Autumn (September–November)

Keep ferry and reef plans movable when weather changes.

Crowds
Varies by event and attraction

Notable events

  • Check the dated downtown public-event programme before planning an evening around it.

Winter (December–February)

A mixed shore-and-heritage plan can absorb a less suitable water day.

Crowds
Varies by event and attraction

Notable events

  • Water outings depend on the current operator schedule and conditions.

Make a downtown food evening deliberate

Around Parque de las Palapas, municipal food events have featured marquesitas and Yucatán snacks. Treat it as a downtown evening with a return journey, not as a guaranteed stall or event on every date.

A beach hotel meal and a local food stop answer different needs. Leave space for the latter when you want to see Cancún beyond the resort strip.

City profile

  • Population (Cancún locality, Benito Juárez municipality, INEGI 2020 census, 2020): 888,797

The Maya heritage of the coast is visible at El Rey and San Miguelito, two separate Hotel Zone archaeological sites.

Famous for:

  • Playa Delfines and the Caribbean shore.
  • Maya collections and ruins in the Hotel Zone.
  • Isla Mujeres and underwater art departures.

Use the city base for three different waters and histories

Cancún’s Caribbean beaches are the obvious first image. The less obvious distinction is between that surf shore, Nichupté lagoon and a boat crossing to Isla Mujeres, each reached from a different point.

Museo Maya joins galleries with San Miguelito grounds; El Rey lies farther south as an independent site. Downtown’s Parque de las Palapas gives the stay a working-city evening outside the resort strip.

Planning your Cancún visit: FAQs

How many full days should I spend in Cancún?

Three allows a shore-and-heritage day, an island or reef outing, and a flexible day for a different coast or downtown evening.

Does Museo Maya admission include El Rey?

No. The museum includes San Miguelito; El Rey is a separate Hotel Zone archaeological site with its own admission.

Can I take a simple ferry to Isla Mujeres?

Yes. Ultramar lists sailings from Puerto Juárez. A catamaran cruise is a different product with its own departure and time ashore.

Is Playa Delfines free?

The municipality identifies it as a public beach. Read the current safety flag before entering the sea; a free shore visit is not a guaranteed swim.

Is Chichén Itzá in Cancún?

No. It is a Yucatán archaeological site and a full regional outing. Its listed admission also has a Yucatán state component.

Does the airport bus reach my hotel?

ASUR lists ADO at airport terminals 2, 3 and 4, but the ticket destination and final hotel leg depend on where you stay.
