One Day in Barcelona: Preview the City Before You Plan
Explore Gaudí architecture, old-town streets, markets and Barcelona after dark, then choose this page’s free, mid-range or splurge day. The film is a city overview, not a promise that every featured stop fits into one day.

Three days: the default plan
Group Barcelona by area, not a ranked list. Day one covers Sagrada Família and the Gaudí buildings on Passeig de Gràcia, day two walks the old town, and day three goes uphill alone to Park Güell.
- Day 1: Sagrada Família, then Casa Batlló and La Pedrera on Passeig de Gràcia — one direct Metro line, no transfer.
- Day 2: the Gothic Quarter, La Rambla and Boqueria Market — an old-town day entirely on foot.
- Day 3: Park Güell alone — it sits uphill in Gràcia and needs its own timed-entry slot.
- Before you fly: book a Sagrada Família slot and a Park Güell time slot online.
- The day before: book one Passeig de Gràcia house — Casa Batlló or La Pedrera, not both if short on time.
- Day order: skip Sunday for day two — Boqueria Market closes — and skip Monday for a fourth day at the Picasso Museum.
Day 1: Sagrada Família and the Gaudí cluster, about €110

Sagrada Família and the Gaudí cluster share Metro Line L2, so day one never backtracks. Start at the basilica, then ride L2 direct to Passeig de Gràcia for the Gaudí houses.
Casa Batlló and La Pedrera stand about 350 metres apart and sell separate tickets, so pick one for a first visit unless the day allows both.
See or book Casa Batlló tickets
- Take Metro L2 to Sagrada Família and enter your timed basilica slot, booked online in advance.
- Ride L2 direct to Passeig de Gràcia — no line change — for the Gaudí houses.
- Visit Casa Batlló, then walk about 350 metres to La Pedrera if the day allows both.
- Look up at each rooftop from street level even on a day you skip a second interior.
- Evening: Passeig de Gràcia’s shops and cafés stay open past the museum-hours rush.
Good to know
- Sagrada Família tickets go on sale roughly two months ahead and sell online only, with no on-the-day counter sale.
- Casa Batlló and La Pedrera are independently operated; a ticket to one does not cover the other.
- The basilica opens every day of the year; Sundays start later, at 10:30am.
- La Pedrera’s daytime Essential ticket costs from €29 per adult.
| Item | € per person | US$ |
|---|---|---|
| Sagrada Família, basilica-only adult ticket | €26 | ≈ US$29 |
| Casa Batlló, cheapest bookable option today | €79.48 | ≈ US$88 |
| Total | €105.48 | ≈ US$116 |
On your own
Book each ticket direct and set your own pace between the basilica and Passeig de Gràcia.

Day 1 in tickets: about €110.

Day 2: Gothic Quarter, La Rambla and Boqueria, about €25

The old town rewards walking, not transit: the Gothic Quarter, La Rambla and Boqueria Market sit inside one compact core.
Boqueria Market opens Monday to Saturday only, 8am to 8:30pm, so skip Sunday for this day and swap in another block instead.
See or book a Gothic Quarter walking tour
- Start at Plaça de Catalunya and walk La Rambla south toward the harbour.
- Turn into Boqueria Market for a stall lunch — closed Sundays, open Monday to Saturday.
- Cross into the Gothic Quarter for Barcelona Cathedral and the Roman city wall remains.
- Walk the narrow lanes toward Plaça Reial and Plaça Sant Jaume on foot.
- Nothing on this day needs a booked ticket or a timed entry.
Good to know
- Boqueria Market runs Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8:30pm; a Sunday visit finds it shut.
- The Gothic Quarter preserves Roman street axes and medieval layers in one walkable core.
- A single TMB ticket costs €2.90 if the day needs one Metro or bus ride.
| Item | € per person | US$ |
|---|---|---|
| TMB single ticket, Zone 1 metro or bus | €2.90 | ≈ US$3 |
| Gothic Quarter walking tour, cheapest bookable option today | €18.32 | ≈ US$20 |
| Total | €21.22 | ≈ US$23 |
On your own
Walk the old town at your own pace; nothing on this day needs a booked ticket.

Day 2 in tickets: about €25.

Day 3: Park Güell, about €60

Park Güell sits uphill in Gràcia, apart from the compact centre, so it earns its own day rather than a quick add-on.
Entry is timed: arrive within 30 minutes of the printed time or the slot lapses, so a same-day walk-up is not a reliable backup.
See or book Park Güell tickets
- Book a Monumental Zone time slot online before the day — availability is limited.
- Take bus H6 or D40 to Travessera de Dalt, then walk about 10 minutes.
- Or ride Metro L3 to Lesseps or Vallcarca, then walk about 20 minutes uphill.
- Enter within 30 minutes of your printed time; a late arrival forfeits the slot.
- Walk the Monumental Zone and the Nature Square terrace, then the free hillside gardens outside it.
Good to know
- Park Güell availability runs very limited, so buying online and in advance is the reliable path.
- Tickets go on sale up to three months ahead and sell online only, with no walk-up counter.
- The hillside gardens outside the Monumental Zone stay open without a ticket.
| Item | € per person | US$ |
|---|---|---|
| Park Güell, Monumental Zone adult ticket | €18 | ≈ US$20 |
| Park Güell, cheapest bookable option today | €38.69 | ≈ US$43 |
| Total | €56.69 | ≈ US$62 |

If you have two days
With two days, keep day one and day two as written. Drop Park Güell — it sits furthest out and needs its own timed slot that neither central day has room for.
- Day 1: as written — Sagrada Família, then Casa Batlló or La Pedrera, not both.
- Day 2: as written — the Gothic Quarter, La Rambla and Boqueria Market.
- Drop Park Güell; it is the one stop that needs a separate uphill trip.
- If a second Gaudí house still fits, add an evening look at its rooftop from the street.
If you have a fourth day: El Born and Barceloneta, about €50

A fourth day pairs the Picasso Museum in El Born with Barceloneta beach, a short walk apart near the harbour.
The Picasso Museum closes every Monday of the year, so this day works on any date except a Monday.
See or book a Picasso Museum guided tour
- Walk El Born’s Carrer Montcada to the Picasso Museum, strong on Picasso’s formative years.
- Continue on foot through or around Parc de la Ciutadella toward the waterfront.
- Reach Barceloneta beach and the fishing-quarter streets for an open-ended afternoon.
- Keep this day off a Monday — the museum is closed then, all year.
Good to know
- Museu Picasso closes every Monday of the year, plus a short list of public holidays.
- Barceloneta beach costs nothing to enter; treat the afternoon as open-ended, not a scheduled stop.
- The museum’s first Sunday of each month is free, booked in advance, not a walk-up option.
| Item | € per person | US$ |
|---|---|---|
| Picasso Museum, adult ticket (online) | €14 | ≈ US$15 |
| Picasso Museum, cheapest bookable option today | €36 | ≈ US$40 |
| Total | €50 | ≈ US$55 |
On your own
Book the museum ticket yourself and let the beach afternoon run at its own pace.

Facts that shape the trip
Two weekly closures decide which day goes where: Boqueria Market and the Picasso Museum each keep their own day off.
Good to know
- Boqueria Market: Monday to Saturday, 8am to 8:30pm; closed Sunday.
- Picasso Museum: closed every Monday of the year, plus a short holiday list.
- Sagrada Família and Park Güell open daily, but both sell tickets online only, in advance.
- A single TMB Metro or bus ticket costs €2.90; a 10-journey T-casual card costs €13.00.
| Monday | Sunday | |
|---|---|---|
| Boqueria Market | open | closed |
| Picasso Museum | closed | open |
| Sagrada Família | open | open (from 10:30am) |
| Park Güell | open | open |

Where a guided tour earns its money, and where it does not
A guide earns its place where a ticket alone skips context: Sagrada Família’s construction history, or the Gothic Quarter’s Roman and medieval layers. Skip it for the free Passeig de Gràcia rooftop views and Barceloneta’s open-ended afternoon.

Questions people ask
Do Sagrada Família tickets need booking weeks ahead?
Yes — tickets go on sale roughly two months ahead and sell online only, with no on-the-day counter sale.
Is Park Güell’s entry really timed?
Yes. Entry rights lapse 30 minutes after the printed time, so a same-day walk-up is not a reliable backup — book a slot ahead.
Is Boqueria Market open on Sunday?
No — it runs Monday to Saturday only, so plan the old-town day for another weekday if Sunday is fixed.
Which day should I avoid for the Picasso Museum?
Monday — the museum closes every Monday of the year, all year round.
What changes with two days instead of three?
Day one and day two stay as written; day three, Park Güell, drops since it sits furthest out and needs its own slot.
Do Casa Batlló and La Pedrera share one ticket?
No — they are independently operated buildings roughly 350 metres apart, and each sells its own ticket.
