Bangkok travel video: a practical first-trip guide | Mubboo Flights
This 4.1-minute city guide connects Grand Palace, Chao Phraya, Yaowarat, BTS, and Lumpini Park into a practical first-trip plan, helping travellers choose what fits instead of rushing through a checklist. English narration with reviewed English subtitles in the YouTube player.

The loop

One walk links Rattanakosin’s three ticketed sights: the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho next door, then a cross-river ferry to Wat Arun. Start at the palace before the heat and the queues build; finish across the river for the view back.
- Start at the Grand Palace’s Na Phra Lan Road gate; tickets are sold from 8:30 in the morning until 15:30.
- Walk Wat Phra Kaew on the same combined ticket, then exit toward Wat Pho, a few minutes’ walk south.
- Enter Wat Pho for the reclining Buddha; the complex stays open later than the palace, until 19:30.
- Walk to Tha Tien pier and take the cross-river ferry, about five minutes for a nominal fare.
- Finish at Wat Arun on the far bank for the view back across the river to the palace and Wat Pho.
- Dress to the Grand Palace’s rule before you arrive — shoulders and knees covered, no shorts — since the check happens on arrival.
| Option | Our verdict |
|---|---|
| Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew | Free: the outer wall along Na Phra Lan Road. Mid and splurge: the same combined ticket opens the grounds and the Emerald Buddha hall. |
| Wat Pho | Ticketed at every tier — its compound has no free version, unlike the palace and Wat Arun. |
| The ferry crossing | Free, mid and splurge: the same nominal cross-river fare from Tha Tien pier. |
| Wat Arun | Free: the view from Tha Tien pier, across the river. Mid and splurge: the same ticket climbs the terraces. |
Free
The palace’s outer walls, Wat Pho’s gates from the street, and Wat Arun’s riverside view from Tha Tien pier cost nothing beyond the ferry’s nominal fare. Wat Pho has no free version: its compound is ticketed at every entrance, so this tier stays outside it.
- Walk the Grand Palace’s outer wall along Na Phra Lan Road; the crenellated wall and gates are visible without a ticket.
- Continue to Wat Pho and see its gates and roofline from the street — the compound itself needs a ticket to enter.
- Walk to Tha Tien pier and cross by the cross-river ferry for its nominal fare.
- Stand on Wat Arun’s riverside terrace for the view across to the palace and Wat Pho, without buying the climb ticket.
| Item | ฿ per adult | US$ |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Palace, outer wall only | ฿0 | ≈ US$0 |
| Wat Arun, riverside view, no climb | ฿0 | ≈ US$0 |
| Cross-river ferry, Tha Tien to Wat Arun | ฿6 | ≈ US$0 |
| Total | ฿6 | ≈ US$0 |
On your own
The free loop is a walk and a river crossing: two real viewpoints and no ticket queue to plan around.
With a guide
Not needed here — every stop reads from a street sign, and no interior is part of this tier anyway.
The free day: ฿5.50, plus whatever lunch you choose to buy.
Prices checked 18 Sep 2026 · per person, tickets and transport, excluding accommodation
Mid: about ฿2,500 in tickets
Three tickets change the day: the Grand Palace’s combined ticket first, Wat Pho’s entrance next door, then Wat Arun’s climb across the river. Nothing else on this loop needs a booking beyond the palace’s own ticket cutoff.
See or book Grand Palace tickets
- Buy the Grand Palace’s combined ticket for Wat Phra Kaew before 15:30; the grounds stay open to 16:30.
- Walk south to Wat Pho and pay its own entrance; the complex stays open until 19:30.
- Walk to Tha Tien pier and pay the nominal cross-river ferry fare across to Wat Arun.
- Pay Wat Arun’s ticket to climb its terraces for the view back across the river.

| Wat Pho entrance | ฿868 | ≈ US$26 |
| Wat Arun, climb ticket | ฿200 | ≈ US$6 |
| Cross-river ferry, Tha Tien to Wat Arun | ฿6 | ≈ US$0 |
| Total | ฿2,208 | ≈ US$66 |
On your own
Buy each ticket at its own gate; only the palace’s 15:30 cutoff forces a start time.
With a guide
Worth adding on your only day: a guide reads the 1782 founding and the Chapel Royal’s role as you walk through.
The mid-range day: about ฿2,500 per person in tickets and the ferry.
Prices checked 18 Sep 2026 · per person, tickets and transport, excluding accommodation
Splurge: the same tickets, a private guide
Tickets do not change between mid and splurge — what changes is paying for a person, not a bigger ticket. A private guide walks the same three stops, explaining the 1782 founding and handling the dress-code check for you.
See or book a private Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun guide
- Book a private guide for the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun cluster; the reviewed tour lists temple admission as included, so do not buy the tickets twice.
- Let the guide manage timing around the palace’s 15:30 ticket cutoff instead of watching the clock yourself.
- Follow the same walk to Wat Pho and the same ferry crossing to Wat Arun, now with context at every stop.
- Skip the dress-code guesswork — a private guide typically absorbs it as part of the booking.

| Cross-river ferry, Tha Tien to Wat Arun | ฿6 | ≈ US$0 |

On your own
The three tickets alone still cost about ฿2,500; skip the guide and spend the difference on a longer lunch.
With a guide
The one splurge that changes the day: a private guide explains what the walls and inscriptions do not, on your own schedule.
The splurge day: about ฿2,500 in tickets on your own, or a private guide for the same three stops, admission included, from ≈ US$150.

If you are on a layover
Suvarnabhumi reaches the loop fastest by rail; Don Mueang has no rail link at all. From either airport, budget real time for the Grand Palace’s own ticket cutoff, not just the ride in.
Good to know
- The Airport Rail Link’s City Line reaches Phaya Thai in eight stations, meeting the BTS Sukhumvit Line. The MRT Blue Line then reaches Sanam Chai, beside Wat Pho.
- Don Mueang has no rail link. Only bus routes A1 through A4 reach the Mo Chit/Chatuchak Park interchange, or the free shuttle bus crosses to Suvarnabhumi’s rail line.
- The Grand Palace’s own ticket cutoff is 15:30. Budget real time for that, not just the ride in from either airport.
- Under about five hours from landing to that cutoff, skip the palace for now. Start at Wat Pho or Wat Arun instead, and save the palace for a later day.

Where a guided tour earns its money in one day
Paying for a guide changes the history and the dress-code logistics, not the tickets themselves — all three stops cost the same walked alone or with someone explaining them. Compare Bangkok’s guided options below.
Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask
Do I need to book the Grand Palace ticket before I arrive?
No advance booking exists. Tickets are sold in person, but sales stop at 15:30 for grounds that close at 16:30, so arrive well before the cutoff.
Can I skip Wat Pho if the palace visit runs long?
Not for free. Unlike the palace’s outer wall or Wat Arun’s riverside view, Wat Pho’s compound is ticketed at every entrance, so shortening the day means dropping that visit entirely, not just trimming it.
Is the cross-river ferry to Wat Arun safe to just show up for?
Yes. Ferries run from Tha Tien pier roughly every ten minutes for a nominal fare; ignore anyone near the pier offering a cheap ride or claiming the temple is closed.
Do I need to dress a certain way for all three stops?
Yes. The Grand Palace checks shoulders and knees before selling tickets; Wat Pho and Wat Arun expect the same modest standard even without a formal check.
Which stop should I drop on a short layover?
The Grand Palace first. Its own ticket cutoff is the least forgiving, while Wat Pho and Wat Arun stay open later and cost less time to reach from either airport.
