Three days: the default plan

Each day owns one shape: temples on foot, the river and Chinatown by boat, then the modern city on the BTS. Nothing needs booking ahead except the Grand Palace’s 15:30 cutoff.

  1. Day 1: Rattanakosin — Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho, then the ferry to Wat Arun.
  2. Day 2: the river and Chinatown — a Chao Phraya boat leg, then Yaowarat’s food streets.
  3. Day 3: the modern city — Jim Thompson House, then Siam and the BTS.
  4. Day order: keep the river day off a weekend; the Orange Flag boat runs weekdays only.

Day 1: Rattanakosin, about ฿1,500 in tickets

Day one covers Bangkok’s founding island on foot and one short ferry. The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew share one ticket, sold 8:30 to 15:30 for grounds open to 16:30.

Wat Pho, a short walk south, keeps a longer window, and the Tha Tien ferry to Wat Arun turns the last stop into a river crossing.

  1. Arrive before 10:00, dressed with shoulders and knees already covered.
  2. See the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew on one ticket, sold only until 15:30.
  3. Walk south to Wat Pho for the reclining Buddha; open until 18:00.
  4. Cross by ferry from Tha Tien pier to Wat Arun and pay its own entrance.
  5. Evening: cross back to Tha Tien for dinner rather than staying in Thonburi.

Good to know

  • The dress code, shoulders and knees covered, is checked at the Grand Palace entrance before tickets sell.
  • Wat Pho’s grounds cover 20 acres and outlast the Grand Palace’s hours by 90 minutes.
  • Go straight to Tha Tien’s public ferry queue, not anyone offering a private boat.
  • No fixed weekday closes any of the three sites; the 15:30 ticket cutoff is the only deadline.

Day two runs on the water before it runs on foot. The Orange Flag boat, Nonthaburi to Rajsingkorn at a flat fare, covers Rattanakosin, Chinatown’s Ratchawong pier and Sathorn, weekdays only.

Get off at Ratchawong for Yaowarat’s food streets, which need no fixed plan beyond walking until something looks good.

  1. Board the Orange Flag boat at Tha Tien or Sathorn; confirm the flag colour and weekday first.
  2. Ride to Ratchawong pier for Chinatown, or on to Sathorn if the boat is today’s only plan.
  3. Walk Yaowarat Road and the Sampeng lanes; there is no single route, just what looks good.

Good to know

  • The Orange Flag’s Monday-to-Friday schedule is the one rule that changes this day’s order.
  • The flag colour, not the words “Chao Phraya” alone, decides which stretch of river a boat covers.
  • Neither BTS line reaches Chinatown; the MRT Blue Line is the direct route from Sukhumvit or Silom.

Day 3: The modern city, about ฿1,000

Day three trades temples for the BTS. The Jim Thompson House, a silk merchant’s teak compound near National Stadium BTS, runs guided visits daily with the last tour at 17:00.

Siam’s malls and the Sukhumvit or Silom lines fill the rest of the day; save Mahanakhon SkyWalk for a fourth day instead.

  1. Take the BTS to National Stadium for an early guided slot at Jim Thompson House.
  2. Tour the teak house and silk collection; the last guided tour starts at 17:00.
  3. Ride the BTS to Siam and change lines there for Sukhumvit or Silom.
  4. On a Saturday or Sunday, Chatuchak Weekend Market can replace the shopping stop instead.

Good to know

  • Jim Thompson House visits are guided throughout the day, not self-guided like the Grand Palace.
  • Children under 10 enter free; ages 10-21 and visitors with a disability pay a reduced rate.
  • The BTS Sukhumvit and Silom lines meet only at Siam, so a change there is normal.

If you have two days

With two days, keep day one as written. Compress day two into one river leg in the morning and the Jim Thompson House in the afternoon.

  1. Day 1: as written — the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun.
  2. Day 2 morning: one Orange Flag boat leg, confirming it is a weekday.
  3. Day 2 afternoon: the Jim Thompson House, booking a guided slot before 15:00.
  4. Drop the Yaowarat evening and SkyWalk; there is no room for a third area.

If you have a fourth day: about ฿1,500 for Mahanakhon SkyWalk

A fourth day is for Mahanakhon SkyWalk, worth forcing in once the first three days are set. It prices by time of day, and the later tier buys the sunset with one ticket.

Good to know

  • Admission costs more after 15:30, which is also when the view turns to sunset and city lights.
  • The 78th-floor rooftop and its glass floor are included with the standard ticket, not a separate purchase.
  • The deck opens daily 10:00 to midnight, last entry 23:00, so an evening slot needs no early start.

Facts that shape the trip

The plan rests on which network runs which day, not a closed door. Rattanakosin and the modern-city sites keep no weekly closure; only the river boat and the market keep their own calendars.

Good to know

  • The Orange Flag boat runs weekdays only; confirm an alternative before building a weekend river leg.
  • Chatuchak trades only Saturday and Sunday, with a plant-only midweek section and a Friday wholesale evening.
  • TMD normals put April as the hottest month and September as the wettest, which matters most for day one.

Where a guided tour earns its money, and where it does not

A guide earns its place for the story a ticket alone will not tell: the Grand Palace’s founding, or Chinatown’s food streets. Skip it for the Tha Tien ferry and SkyWalk, which need only the ticket.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Do I need to book Grand Palace tickets in advance?

No advance booking is required, but tickets are sold only until 15:30 even though the grounds stay open until 16:30.

Which day should I avoid for the Chao Phraya Express Boat’s Orange Flag?

Weekends. The Orange Flag route runs Monday to Friday only, so a Saturday or Sunday river leg needs a different flag or a taxi instead.

Is the Jim Thompson House visit self-guided or guided?

Guided throughout the day, with the last tour starting at 17:00, unlike the self-guided Grand Palace and Wat Pho.

Should Chatuchak replace one of the three days, or come as a fourth?

As a fourth day, or a swap for day three’s shopping stop if that day lands on a weekend. Any other weekday shows a mostly closed market.

What changes if I only have two days?

Day one stays as written; day two compresses into one river leg and the Jim Thompson House, dropping the full Yaowarat evening and Mahanakhon SkyWalk.

Is Mahanakhon SkyWalk worth adding on a first trip?

Only once the first three days are set. It prices by time of day, so a late-afternoon slot buys the sunset without a separate ticket.
