Bangkok travel video: a practical first-trip guide | Mubboo Flights
This 4.1-minute city guide connects Grand Palace, Chao Phraya, Yaowarat, BTS, and Lumpini Park into a practical first-trip plan, helping travellers choose what fits instead of rushing through a checklist. English narration with reviewed English subtitles in the YouTube player.

A free day, in order
This is the free day we’d walk and ride ourselves: temple grounds, two BMA parks and, if the date allows, Chatuchak’s stalls. Checked against each site’s own listing on 17 September 2026.
- Start at Wat Saket’s grounds, free to enter; skip the 100-baht chedi climb unless the view matters to you.
- Take the MRT or BTS to Benjakitti Forest Park and walk its free elevated skywalk above the wetlands.
- Cross to Lumpini Park, also free, and watch for the wild monitor lizards along its lakes.
- On a Saturday or Sunday, use the afternoon for Chatuchak’s free-to-enter stalls; any other day, most of the market is shut.
Temple grounds that don’t charge
Not every Bangkok temple charges an entrance fee; Wat Saket’s grounds are free. Only the climb to the Golden Mount’s chedi costs 100 baht. The Grand Palace and Wat Arun charge one ticket for the whole complex instead.
Good to know
- Wat Saket (Golden Mount): temple entry free; foreign visitors pay 100 baht for the 344-step climb to the chedi. Published hours conflict, so check on arrival.
- Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew: one 500-baht ticket covers the whole walled complex; tickets sold until 15:30, grounds close 16:30.
- Wat Arun: one 200-baht ticket covers the whole complex, daily 8:00-18:00; the free public ferry from Tha Tien only gets you to the pier.
Parks, a skywalk and monitor lizards

Bangkok’s two best free green spaces both sit inland from the river. Lumpini Park keeps wild monitor lizards along its lakes; Benjakitti Forest Park adds an elevated skywalk linking its wetlands and forest.
Good to know
- Lumpini Park: free, open 4:30 in the morning to 10:00 at night; wild Asian water monitor lizards live along the lakes.
- Benjakitti Forest Park: free, open daily 4:00 in the morning to 9:00 at night. Boardwalks and an elevated skywalk link its wetlands and forest areas.
- Neither park needs a ticket or a booked slot, unlike Bangkok’s paid viewpoints (see Worth paying, below).
Chatuchak: free, but only two days a week
Chatuchak charges nothing to browse its thousands of stalls, but “free” only matters on the two days the full market actually runs. Time the visit wrong and the stalls you came for are shut.
Good to know
- Full market (all sections): Saturday and Sunday, 9:00-18:00 only.
- Plants and flowers section: Wednesday and Thursday, 7:00-18:00, when most of the rest of the market is closed.
- Friday, 18:00-24:00 (midnight): wholesale trading only, not a browsing visit.
- No entry fee is charged on any of these days.
Nearly free, and worth it
A few Bangkok experiences cost only a small fare or a donation-sized fee, not a museum ticket. The Chao Phraya Express Boat doubles as river sightseeing; a 20-baht temple like Wat Ratchanatdaram’s Loha Prasat is the cheapest metal castle you’ll ever climb.
Good to know
- Chao Phraya Express Boat, Orange Flag: a flat 18 baht per trip, Monday-Friday; it passes Sathorn, Rattanakosin and Thonburi without a taxi.
- BTS Skytrain: single fares run 17-65 baht by distance; MRT Blue Line runs 17-44 baht, the rate set from 3 July 2026.
- Wat Ratchanatdaram (Loha Prasat), the only metal castle in Thailand: 20 baht, daily 8:00-17:00, a spiral stair inside climbs to the view.
| Item | ฿ per adult | US$ |
|---|---|---|
| Chao Phraya Express Boat, Orange Flag, single trip | ฿18 | ≈ US$1 |
| BTS Skytrain, minimum single fare | ฿17 | ≈ US$1 |
| MRT Blue Line, minimum single fare | ฿17 | ≈ US$1 |
| Wat Ratchanatdaram (Loha Prasat), entrance | ฿20 | ≈ US$1 |
| Chao Phraya Tourist Boat, all-day hop-on-hop-off pass | ฿200 | ≈ US$6 |
Free versus paid: our verdicts
Four decisions come up on every budget trip to Bangkok, and in most of them the free version is a real alternative, not a lesser one.
| Option | Our verdict |
|---|---|
| Wat Saket’s free grounds and Golden Mount view, versus the Grand Palace’s whole-complex ticket | The 100-baht climb gives a real citywide view; the Palace ticket buys the 1782 founding history the Mount doesn’t have. |
| Lumpini or Benjakitti’s free parks, versus Mahanakhon Skywalk’s paid observation deck | Both free parks give a ground-level city escape; the Skywalk buys height and a 360-degree turn from 314 metres up. |
| Chatuchak’s free weekend browsing, versus a guided Chatuchak food or market tour | Browsing the stalls yourself costs nothing; pay a guide only for the sections and vendors a first visit would miss. |
| The Chao Phraya Express Boat’s commuter fare, versus a paid dinner cruise | The express boat is daytime transport past the same riverfront; the cruise buys the lit-up skyline after dark and a seat. |
When paying is worth it: from ฿1,500 to ฿1,500
Paying is worth it in two cases. The Grand Palace’s ticket is the only way to see the 1782 founding site and the Chapel Royal at all; Mahanakhon Skywalk buys the one 360-degree view no free park matches.
A Chao Phraya dinner cruise is a third real upgrade. The riverfront temples are lit but closed after dark, so a cruise is the only way to see that skyline from the water.

Good to know
- Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew: 500 baht, the whole complex, tickets sold until 15:30 for grounds that close at 16:30.
- Mahanakhon Skywalk: 1,000 baht from 10:00-15:30, 1,200 baht from 15:30-19:00, for the 74th and 78th floors.
- A Chao Phraya dinner cruise is a separate evening booking, not a way to see any of the temples up close.

Where paying is worth it, and where it is not
Spend on the Grand Palace’s founding-history ticket or Mahanakhon’s skyline. Everything else here, temple grounds, two free parks and Chatuchak’s stalls, is already free at full strength.

Questions people ask
Is the Grand Palace free on any day?
No. Every visitor, every day, pays the same single ticket for the whole walled complex; there is no free day or free section.
Are Bangkok’s temple grounds free to walk?
It depends on the temple. Wat Saket’s grounds are free and only the chedi climb is paid; the Grand Palace and Wat Arun instead charge one ticket for their whole complex.
Is Chatuchak Weekend Market really free to enter?
Yes, browsing costs nothing any day it’s open. The catch is timing: the full market with all its sections runs only Saturday and Sunday.
What’s the cheapest way to see the river?
The Chao Phraya Express Boat’s Orange Flag route is commuter transport, not a booked cruise. It passes the same riverfront other boats charge far more to show you.
Is there a free skyline view in Bangkok?
Not a true one. Benjakitti Forest Park’s elevated skywalk is free and lifts you above its wetlands; a 360-degree turn from height still means paying for somewhere like Mahanakhon.
Is Lumpini Park safe, and are the monitor lizards a problem?
The park is a normal, well-used public space, free and open long hours. The wild monitor lizards keep to the lakes and are best left unfed and unbothered.
