How to choose

Five trips leave Bangkok in different directions. Ayutthaya is the closest and needs no guide once you arrive; the floating markets and Kanchanaburi are easier with one, since none of Bangkok's rail or bus operators publish a schedule Mubboo could confirm this pass.

Good to know

  • The Chao Phraya river temples already covered by the Bangkok city guide are left off this page since they are not day trips.

Damnoen Saduak + Maeklong · about 100 minutes by roadA morning canal market and a train that runs straight through the stalls; go before 10 in the morning.
Amphawa · about 105 minutes by roadFriday to Sunday only, an evening market that ends with a firefly boat.
Kanchanaburi · about two hours by road or railA free bridge and a paid museum next to it, for a bridge-and-railway history day.
Erawan Falls · about three hours by roadSeven tiers to swim in; the longest trip here, built around a hike, not a market or temple.

Ayutthaya: guided day tours from ฿2,500 (about 90 minutes)

Ayutthaya's ruins spread across an island about 86 kilometres north of Bangkok, each temple charging its own entrance fee on arrival. A guided day tour bundles those fees, transport and lunch into one price; on your own, budget cash for each stop.

  1. Reach Ayutthaya by road, or check the State Railway of Thailand's current schedule for a train north from Bangkok.
  2. Start at Wat Chaiwatthanaram, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya. Tickets sell from 8:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the evening, viewing until 6:00.
  3. Pay the 80-baht foreign-visitor entrance fee on arrival; Thai nationals pay 10 baht.
  4. Walk or hire a tuk-tuk between the historical park's other temple ruins; there is no single park-wide ticket covering them all.
  5. Carry cash in small baht notes; most temple gates do not take cards.

Good to know

  • Wat Chaiwatthanaram's 80-baht fee is one temple among several; each historical-park site charges separately at its own gate.
  • Guided day tours from Bangkok are sold covering the main temples, transport and lunch in one booking.

Damnoen Saduak and the Maeklong Railway Market (about 100 minutes by road)

Damnoen Saduak's canal trades most mornings, and most visitors pair it with the Maeklong Railway Market, where vendors work around a passing train. Go early: the boats and stalls are busiest, and coolest, before mid-morning.

  1. Leave Bangkok before 8:00 in the morning; the canal is at its busiest, and coolest, earliest in the day.
  2. Hire a private boat at the pier to move through the canal and shop from the vendors, for a few hundred baht.
  3. Continue on to the Maeklong Railway Market, where stallholders fold back their awnings for a passing train.
  4. Check the current train-passing times locally; Mubboo could not confirm today's exact schedule on an operator page this pass.

Good to know

  • A private boat at Damnoen Saduak costs a few hundred baht, per Tourism Authority of Thailand.
  • Guided morning tours from Bangkok bundle both markets into one booking.

On your own

Possible by hired van or taxi, but you negotiate the boat hire and the Maeklong stop yourself.

With a guide

Bundles the return transport, the boat and the railway-market stop into one early-morning booking.

Amphawa: Friday to Sunday, with fireflies after dark

Amphawa only trades Friday through Sunday, from 10:00 in the morning to 8:30 in the evening, so check the day of the week before you plan around it. Its appeal is the evening: food stalls, canal-side cafes, and a firefly boat after dark.

  1. Confirm your visit falls on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday; the market does not trade on other days.
  2. Arrive by mid-afternoon for food and the canal-side market before the evening crowd builds.
  3. Arrange a firefly boat trip locally after dark, in the canalside cork trees.
  4. Plan the return to Bangkok for late evening, once the market has wound down.

Good to know

  • Amphawa trades 10:00 in the morning to 8:30 in the evening, Friday through Sunday only.
  • A firefly boat tour after dark is arranged locally, not pre-booked from the market itself.

On your own

Workable by hired van on a Friday-to-Sunday evening, once you arrange the firefly boat yourself.

With a guide

Evening tours bundle the return transport, the market and the firefly boat into one booking.

Kanchanaburi: guided day tours from ฿2,500 (about two hours)

Kanchanaburi is about two hours from Bangkok by road or by a weekend sightseeing train. The Bridge Over the River Kwai itself is free to cross; the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre next to it is not.

  1. Travel by road, or by one of the weekend sightseeing trains that run on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
  2. Walk onto the Bridge Over the River Kwai; it is free and open 24 hours a day.
  3. Visit the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre next to the bridge, open 9:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the evening.
  4. Pay the 160-baht foreign-visitor admission on entry; children pay 80 baht.
  5. Start early if returning the same day; the round trip alone takes about four hours.

Good to know

  • The bridge itself carries no entrance fee and is open around the clock.
  • The Thailand-Burma Railway Centre charges 160 baht for foreign adults, 80 baht for children.

Erawan National Park is the nature day this page was missing: a seven-tier waterfall about 65 kilometres beyond Kanchanaburi, each tier its own swimming hole. It is the longest trip here, so start as early as you can.

  1. Travel by road; Erawan lies 65 kilometres beyond Kanchanaburi town along Route 3199, so budget the best part of a day.
  2. Pay the 300-baht foreign-visitor entrance fee on arrival; Thai nationals pay 100 baht.
  3. Start at the lower tiers and climb; all seven are swimming spots, so bring shoes with grip for wet rock.
  4. Walk the 30-minute Erawan nature trail through hill evergreen and deciduous forest if you want shade between tiers.

Good to know

  • Erawan Waterfall runs about 1,500 metres over seven tiers; every tier is a swimming area, per Tourism Authority of Thailand.
  • Foreign visitors pay 300 baht (200 baht for children); Thai nationals pay 100 baht (50 baht for children).

If you only do one

Ayutthaya. It is the shortest trip here, and a guided day tour bundles every temple's gate fee, transport and lunch into one price.

Good to know

  • A free landmark instead: the Bridge Over the River Kwai, paired with the paid museum next to it.
  • An evening instead of a morning: Amphawa, Friday to Sunday, ending with a firefly boat.
  • The classic combination: Damnoen Saduak's morning canal trade with the Maeklong Railway Market.
  • A hike and a swim instead: Erawan National Park's seven-tier waterfall, the longest trip on this page.

Where a guided day tour earns its money, and where it does not

A guide earns its keep at Kanchanaburi, Erawan and on the floating markets, bundling transport that neither of Bangkok's rail lines confirms on a fixed schedule. Ayutthaya's temples are simple enough alone, once you budget cash for each gate.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Is Maeklong Railway Market included with a Damnoen Saduak trip?

Usually, yes: most guided morning tours and independent travellers combine the floating market with the nearby railway market in one visit.

Do I need to book Amphawa's firefly boat tour in advance?

No official booking exists: the firefly boat is arranged locally after dark, once you are at the market.

Is Kanchanaburi possible as a same-day trip from Bangkok?

Yes, but budget the whole day: about two hours each way, so an early start matters here too.

Do Ayutthaya's temples share one entrance ticket?

No. Each temple in the historical park charges its own gate fee separately; there is no single park-wide ticket.

Can I swim at every tier of Erawan Falls?

Tourism Authority of Thailand describes all seven tiers of Erawan Waterfall as safe swimming areas, reached by a 30-minute walk along the park nature trail.
