Bali is an island rather than a compact city, so most of what separates two similar activity listings here is the road between you and them.
The second thing to read is the inclusion list, because temple entry, a performance, a sanctuary ticket and a boat seat are sold separately.
Foreign visitors also pay the provincial Love Bali levy once per trip, which sits outside anything an activity listing covers.
MUBBOO EDITORIAL
Experiences worth prioritising in Bali
Our planning choices weigh the experience, who it suits and what you give up. Affiliate sales and availability do not determine this order.
Monkey Forest on its own admission
The Padangtegal sanctuary opens at 9:00 and stops admitting at 17:00, and it is ticketed separately from any Ubud walking itinerary. Its rules bind the visitor rather than the operator: nothing to eat or drink inside, lockers for plastic bags, no touching and no feeding.
Best for Visitors who came for the sanctuary itself, not for a photo stop on a six-place loop.
Consider A guided Ubud day commits you to its stop list, and the one fixed thing in it is a gate that closes at 17:00.
Tirta Empul as a ritual rather than a viewpoint
The spring at Tampaksiring, about 14 km northeast of Ubud, feeds 30 waterspouts into two purification pools. Bathers start at the left-hand pool and work along one spout at a time, and two spouts are reserved for funeral rites.
Best for Visitors who intend to take part in melukat, not to photograph other people doing it.
Consider Bathing ends with wet clothes and a change, so the rest of that day has to be built around the ritual.
Uluwatu: three things, sold three ways
The temple stands on a 70 metre cliff at Pecatu, and Indonesia Tourism tells visitors to arrive around 5 pm for the Kecak dance. Entry, the performance and the transfer are separable, and a listing naming only the dance may leave the admission to you.
Best for Visitors building one south-coast evening around a single cliffside performance.
Consider Ubud to Uluwatu runs 1.5 to 2 hours each way, which turns a one-hour dance into the whole evening.
Tanah Lot, where the tide sets the visit
The shrine sits on rock separated from the shoreline at high tide, so how close you get is decided by the water rather than the ticket. Sarongs are handed out at the entrance, and the site lies about 45 minutes by road from Denpasar.
Best for Visitors who want a west-coast temple and are willing to build an afternoon around it.
Consider Indonesia Tourism advises late afternoon for the sunset and an earlier arrival for a quieter temple area, so one visit cannot give you both.
A World Heritage subak landscape, not a terrace backdrop
UNESCO’s Bali property covers five rice terraces and their water temples across 19,500 hectares, governed by a subak system of canals and weirs dating to the ninth century. Jatiluwih in Tabanan belongs to it; Tegalalang, the terrace most Ubud listings mean, does not.
Best for Visitors who want the working irrigation culture and the institution that runs it.
Consider Tabanan is a west-inland day of its own, so taking it drops either the Bukit coast or the boat day.
Batur: the climb or the caldera rim
Mount Batur is 1,717 metres inside a double caldera that UNESCO lists as a Global Geopark across 15 villages in Kintamani. The crescent lake measures 7 km by 1.5 km, and the rim, the lake and the hot springs are reachable without the ascent.
Best for Visitors choosing between a pre-dawn climb and a seated view of the same caldera.
Consider A guided ascent is sold with a collection in the small hours, so it quietly takes the evening before it as well.
Nusa Penida measured in road, not stops
Boats cross from Sanur, Kusamba or Padang Bai to Toyapakeh or Sampalan in about 30 to 45 minutes. Once ashore the roads are hilly and partly rocky, so a four-stop itinerary can mean four transfers and a viewpoint at each.
Best for Visitors willing to give the crossing and the island’s west a whole day.
Consider The descent to Kelingking’s sand is steep and dangerous, so a listing that shows the beach is not promising you will stand on it.
The Gilis as a reef day, not a viewpoint day
Boats leave Bali for the Gilis from Padang Bai or Serangan, and the islands allow no motorised vehicles, so you move by bicycle or cidomo. Three-island snorkelling runs take in Coral Garden, Turtle Point and the Bounty Wreck.
Best for Visitors who would rather spend the day in the water than at a railing.
Consider A bicycle lap of Gili Trawangan takes about an hour, which tells you how much of a day return is actually boat.
East Bali gates, and the shuttle you cannot skip
Lempuyang sits in Karangasem, two to three hours from central Bali, and a shuttle bus from the parking area is mandatory rather than optional. Besakih, on the slopes of Mount Agung, is a further two to three hours from Ubud on winding road.
Best for Visitors willing to spend most of a day in a car for one east Bali temple.
Consider Indonesia Tourism recommends a driver for both because of the terrain, and early morning for the view, which rules out a late start.
North-coast falls against an Ubud-side one
Sekumpul in Buleleng is seven waterfalls side by side beneath forested cliffs, on the opposite side of the island from the southern beaches. Tegenungan sits in Gianyar within reach of Ubud, with natural pools you can swim or wade in.
Best for Visitors adding water to an inland day without surrendering the day to it.
Consider Crossing Bali north for Sekumpul is the day, while a Gianyar fall can sit inside an Ubud afternoon.
Select the Bali activity by inclusion and departure
Ubud sanctuary entry or a guided town day?
Buy the Monkey Forest admission alone when the sanctuary is the point of the morning.
A guided Ubud day buys you a driver and a stop list, and the sanctuary may be one line on it.
The trade-off The forest stops admitting at 17:00, so the fixed part of a guided day is the gate you may reach last.
Uluwatu performance only, or admission with it?
Take the combined option when you want to walk the temple before the dance rather than only watch it.
Entry brings a sarong and sash, and Indonesia Tourism puts arrival at around 5 pm for the Kecak.
The trade-off What you cannot book around is the road: Ubud to Uluwatu is 1.5 to 2 hours each way.
Nusa Penida: which port and how much road?
Choose the crossing by the port that matches where you sleep, then read how the island day is divided.
Sanur, Kusamba and Padang Bai all sail to Toyapakeh or Sampalan in about 30 to 45 minutes.
The trade-off Kelingking’s descent is steep and dangerous, so a photograph of the sand is not an offer to reach it.
Subak landscape or the volcano?
Take Jatiluwih when the interest is irrigation culture and Batur when it is the caldera.
One is part of a 19,500 hectare World Heritage property; the other is a 1,717 metre cone in a geopark.
The trade-off A sunrise ascent is sold with a collection in the small hours, so it also spends the evening before.
Tirta Empul: bathe or visit the grounds?
Book the option that states you will enter the pools if melukat is the reason you are going.
The spring feeds 30 spouts into two pools, and two of them are reserved for funeral rites.
The trade-off Bathing ends in wet clothes, so the rest of that day has to be planned around it.
East Bali gate day, or a temple closer in?
Choose Lempuyang or Besakih only when a whole day in the car is acceptable.
Both sit two to three hours out, and Lempuyang’s parking area feeds a mandatory shuttle bus.
The trade-off Indonesia Tourism advises a driver for the terrain, so an independent scooter plan is the wrong tool here.
A waterfall day, or a waterfall inside a day?
Take Sekumpul when the north coast is the plan, and a Gianyar fall when Ubud still is.
Sekumpul is seven falls in Buleleng; Tegenungan is close enough to Ubud to sit inside an afternoon.
The trade-off Crossing the island north commits the day, and it cannot be added to an inland heritage morning.
Which date can nothing be booked on?
Keep Nyepi out of a fixed itinerary and put a movable day beside every sea crossing.
The island observes a full day of silence and the airport halts scheduled flights for 24 hours from 6 a.m.
The trade-off A fixed-date activity cannot move when a sailing is cancelled, and the spare day is what absorbs it.

MAKE THE TRIP YOURS
Fit your bookings into a day
Inland Ubud day
Start at the sanctuary, not the shops
The Monkey Forest admits visitors from 9:00 and stops at 17:00, so it belongs at the front of the day. Leave food, drink and plastic bags in the lobby lockers, and keep jewellery and small loose objects secured because the macaques are drawn to them.
Add one water site, not three
Tirta Empul is about 30 minutes northeast at Tampaksiring, and joining the queue under its 30 spouts is a commitment rather than a stop. If you bathe, plan dry clothes and let the second inland site go.
Leave the terrace for another day
Jatiluwih is in Tabanan and takes a road journey west, so the terrace most Ubud itineraries show you is Tegalalang, a different place. Decide which one you actually want before a driver decides for you.
Ubud’s own streets and a subak landscape are not one outing; Jatiluwih is a separate road journey west.
Bukit coast day
Work backwards from 5 pm
Indonesia Tourism tells visitors to be at Uluwatu around 5 pm for the Kecak dance, which sets everything earlier in the day. A sarong and sash come with entry, and the resident monkeys take glasses and hats.
Then read the three parts
Temple admission, the performance and the transfer are sold on their own as well as bundled. Two products of the same length can differ entirely in which of the three they include, so compare inclusions before duration.
Treat the monkeys as a rule, not a charm
Uluwatu’s resident monkeys take glasses and hats, and Indonesia Tourism says plainly not to get too close. Anything loose is better inside a bag before you reach the cliff path.
From Ubud this is 1.5 to 2 hours each way, so the performance costs a full evening.
West Bali heritage
Jatiluwih needs the morning
The subak landscape is a working irrigation system covering part of a 19,500 hectare World Heritage property, not a roadside viewpoint. Walking any of it needs daylight you will not have if a sunset temple is booked first.
Tanah Lot answers to the water
The shrine stands on rock cut off from the shoreline at high tide, so the sea decides how close anyone gets. Late afternoon is the sunset; earlier is the quieter temple area, and no single visit delivers both.
Taman Ayun belongs to the same listing
The 18th-century royal water temple of Pura Taman Ayun is part of the same UNESCO property as Jatiluwih, and it stands at Mengwi about an hour from Denpasar or Ubud. It is the short stop that genuinely belongs on this day.
Tabanan is a full day inland and west, and it does not fold into a south-coast beach day.
Nusa Penida crossing
The port belongs to the operator
Crossings leave from Sanur, Kusamba and Padang Bai and land at Toyapakeh or Sampalan in about 30 to 45 minutes. A room in Sanur does not mean your boat sails from Sanur, so read the terminal on the option.
Steep is a condition, not a detail
Nusa Penida’s roads are hilly and partly rocky, and the way down to Kelingking Beach is steep and dangerous. Decide before booking whether you want the viewpoint or the sand, because they are not the same commitment.
Pick the season, not only the date
Indonesia Tourism names April to October as the dry season for Nusa Penida, which is when a crossing is least likely to be rearranged. Outside it, the sea day is the part of a Bali plan worth holding loosely.
Sea conditions govern the sailing, and April to October is the dry season Indonesia Tourism names.
Five-day coast and inland split
Two crossings is one too many
Nusa Penida and the Gilis are separate sea days from different ports, Sanur or Kusamba for one and Padang Bai or Serangan for the other. Choosing both leaves three days for the rest of Bali.
Keep one day unbooked
The part of a Bali plan most likely to move is a boat, not a temple. A spare day turns a cancelled sailing into an inland day rather than a refund argument, and it absorbs a Nyepi closure if one falls in the trip.
Put the levy out of the way early
The Love Bali levy is paid one time per trip and returns a QR voucher by email, so settling it online before arrival takes it off the first day. Airport and port counters and registered hotels can also take it.
Every extra base costs a check-in and a transfer, and Ubud to the Bukit is the longest of them.
FAQs about Bali
Which port does my Nusa Penida boat actually leave from?
Fast boats run from Sanur, Kusamba and Padang Bai and land at Toyapakeh or Sampalan in about 30 to 45 minutes. The port belongs to the operator rather than to your hotel, so read it on the option before choosing a room to be near it.
Is Monkey Forest admission included in an Ubud tour?
Only when the option names the sanctuary entry. The forest is separately ticketed in Padangtegal, admitting from 9:00 until 17:00 and closing at 18:00, and an Ubud town walk can pass its gate without going in.
Does a Kecak ticket also cover entry to Uluwatu temple?
Not automatically, because admission, the performance and the transfer are each sold on their own in Bali. Check that your option lists the temple entry as well as the show, and plan to be there around 5 pm, the hour Indonesia Tourism gives for the dance.
Do I need to bring my own sarong?
No. Sarongs are provided at the entrance at Uluwatu, Tanah Lot and Tirta Empul, where one can be rented for a donation, and Uluwatu adds a sash. Shoulders and knees stay covered, and modest dress is expected inside the Monkey Forest too.
Which rice terrace is the tour actually going to?
Jatiluwih in Tabanan is part of UNESCO’s Cultural Landscape of Bali Province, 19,500 hectares of terraces and water temples run by the ninth-century subak system. Tegalalang, near Ubud, is a different place with a different journey, so read the name rather than the photograph.
Is the sunrise climb the only way to see Mount Batur?
No. Batur is 1,717 metres inside a double caldera that UNESCO lists as a Global Geopark across 15 villages in Kintamani, and its 7 km lake, the rim and the hot springs are all reachable without climbing. The guided ascent is a separate product with a collection in the small hours.
What is the Bali tourist levy and is it inside a tour listing?
It is a provincial charge of Rp 150,000 per international tourist, collected one time per trip rather than at each site. It sits outside what any activity listing covers. You can settle it online, at an airport or port counter, or through a registered hotel, agent or attraction, and the receipt arrives by email as a QR voucher.
Can the Gili Islands work as a day trip from Bali?
They can, but the boats leave from Padang Bai or Serangan and the islands lie in West Nusa Tenggara. No motorised vehicles are allowed, so you move by bicycle or cidomo, and a bike lap of Gili Trawangan takes about an hour. Snorkelling runs cover Coral Garden, Turtle Point and the Bounty Wreck.
