The decorated entrance of Ubud Palace

Ubud Palace and its streets

Ubud’s palace area is a centre for traditional art and cultural walks.

Best for: Visitors who want Ubud’s central streets before a longer landscape outing · Area: Central Ubud

Plan for A palace-area walk does not include the forest or a rice landscape.

A temple bridge in Ubud Monkey Forest

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

The village-managed sanctuary combines macaques, forest and a spiritual setting in Ubud.

Best for: Visitors who want a specific nature stop within an Ubud day · Area: Padangtegal, Ubud

Plan for The sanctuary has a paid entry; a generic Ubud walk may not include it.

Working rice fields at Jatiluwih in the subak landscape

Jatiluwih and the subak landscape

UNESCO’s Bali property protects working subak irrigation landscapes, including Catur Angga Batukaru.

Best for: Visitors interested in agricultural culture beyond a photo stop · Area: Tabanan, inland west of Ubud

Plan for A Tegalalang photo stop elsewhere is not the same World Heritage component.

Tanah Lot sea temple on the Bali coast

Tanah Lot sea temple

Tanah Lot sits on a sea-facing rock on Bali’s western coast.

Best for: Visitors seeking a west-coast temple visit · Area: Tabanan coast

Plan for A distant south-Bali base adds a substantial ground leg.

Uluwatu temple on the cliff above the sea

Uluwatu temple and cliff

Uluwatu is a temple and dramatic headland on the Bukit Peninsula.

Best for: Visitors choosing a south-coast temple and cultural performance · Area: Southwest Bukit Peninsula

Plan for A dance-only listing may exclude temple access or transport.

Sanur shore and its calmer seafront

Sanur beachfront

Sanur’s east-facing shore offers a different coastal rhythm from Kuta’s western surf.

Best for: Visitors who want a calmer shore and a practical island-departure base · Area: East coast near Denpasar

Plan for A Sanur hotel is not automatically beside every boat operator’s departure.

Kuta beach on Bali’s southwest coast

Kuta Beach

Indonesia Tourism describes Kuta’s western shore as a surf and beach destination.

Best for: Visitors prioritising an open west-coast shore · Area: Southwest Bali

Plan for The setting and surf differ from Sanur’s east-facing water.

The cliff and Kelingking cove on Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida and Kelingking coast

Nusa Penida is part of Bali Province but requires a separate crossing from Bali’s main island.

Best for: Visitors willing to dedicate a whole island day · Area: Offshore southeast of Bali

Plan for A Kelingking viewpoint photo does not guarantee safe beach descent or a short crossing.

The Mount Batur volcanic landscape

Mount Batur and lake landscape

UNESCO names the Ulun Danu Batur water temple and Lake Batur as part of the inscribed subak landscape.

Best for: Visitors choosing a volcanic landscape or a guided sunrise trek · Area: Kintamani, northeast inland

Plan for The early trek demands a much earlier departure than an ordinary landscape visit.

Choose the base before stacking island days

First Ubud day

Walk the palace area and visit the Monkey Forest as a separately ticketed stop.

A rice landscape needs its own inland road outing.

The trade-off A beach sunset does not fit naturally after a full inland day.

South-coast day

Give Uluwatu and a chosen Bukit shore their own region-focused day.

Compare a temple-entry option with a dance-only performance before booking.

The trade-off The return to Ubud changes the evening plan.

Island day

Use a Sanur-area departure for a specifically named Nusa Penida trip.

Read both boat times and actual time on the island.

The trade-off Weather or a late return can remove the rest of that day.

Choose the daily return that matters most

Ubud for inland focus

Choose the centre when arts, forest and rice landscapes anchor the trip.

Give beach or boat days a separate transport plan.

The trade-off The coast is not an Ubud neighbourhood.

Sanur for east-coast mornings

Stay near the shore when local walks and a possible island boat are priorities.

Check the exact operator port rather than the hotel’s general location.

The trade-off The Bukit temple is still a road journey.

Bukit for Uluwatu

Stay south for repeated cliff and cove time.

Read pickup and return terms for a performance.

The trade-off Ubud’s inland heritage takes a separate day.

Arrive at DPS, then name the real base and port

I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport serves the main island near the southern visitor areas. An Ubud hotel, Sanur shore and Bukit address are three different onward journeys.

A Nusa Penida day adds a separately booked sea departure. BlueWater lists distinct Bali ports for different boat routes, so match a product’s terminal and return sailing to the lodging rather than assuming every boat leaves Sanur.

Best time to visit

Spring (March–May)

Build flexible transport around dated observances and check any boat sailing.

Crowds
Varies by event and attraction

Notable events

  • Nyepi fell on 19 March in 2026; future dates and local operating rules need a fresh check.

Summer (June–August)

Keep the island crossing movable if the sea operator changes service.

Crowds
Varies by event and attraction

Notable events

  • Local arts programmes vary by venue and date; check the chosen performance before fixing a coast return.

Autumn (September–November)

Protect a flexible day for offshore weather and a separate inland plan.

Crowds
Varies by event and attraction

Notable events

  • Temple observances follow local calendars; confirm access for the exact temple and visit date.

Winter (December–February)

Treat water time as conditional on the live boat and beach conditions.

Crowds
Varies by event and attraction

Notable events

  • Year-end operating hours and boat sailings require a current venue check.

Let craft and a Balinese meal shape one inland evening

Indonesia Tourism names Ubud Art Market and Sukawati Art Market as craft stops. Choose one on the route you are actually taking rather than reserving both as guaranteed openings.

Babi guling and slow-cooked ayam betutu give two different Balinese food starting points. Ingredient preferences and particular stalls should be checked locally; an Ubud meal need not be paired with a distant shore return.

City profile

  • Population (Bali Province, Statistics Indonesia 2020 census; not Denpasar municipality, 2020): 4,317,404

The subak network joins rice terraces, canals and water temples as a living agricultural landscape across five UNESCO components.

Famous for:

  • Ubud’s forest, arts and living rice landscapes.
  • Contrasting Sanur, Kuta and Bukit coastlines.
  • A separately reached Nusa Penida island coast.

Build the stay around one inland and one coast decision

Bali is richer than a single beach strip. In Ubud, art streets and a village-managed sanctuary sit within reach of working rice landscapes. Sanur’s east-facing shore and Kuta’s west-coast beach produce different days.

The Bukit’s Uluwatu headland is another deliberate trip, while Nusa Penida adds a boat crossing. Selecting a base for the activities you will repeat prevents every morning from starting as a long transfer.

Planning your Bali visit: FAQs

How many full days should I spend in Bali?

Four days allow Ubud, a south-coast temple, a shore day and one flexible outing. Add another day for Nusa Penida rather than compressing the crossing into an Ubud afternoon.

Is Bali only Denpasar?

No. Denpasar is the provincial capital, while the visitor region includes Ubud, multiple coast bases and Nusa Penida. Choose the actual place where you will sleep.

Can I visit Nusa Penida without a boat?

The island needs a crossing. Confirm the port, current sailing, weather and return before booking a land itinerary.

Is the Monkey Forest free?

No. The sanctuary has its own paid admission and visitor rules. A tour mentioning Ubud does not automatically include that entry.

Are Tegalalang and Jatiluwih the same place?

No. Jatiluwih is part of the UNESCO subak landscape in Tabanan; Tegalalang is a separate rice-terrace area near Ubud.

Does a Kecak ticket include Uluwatu temple access?

Only when the exact product option names temple entry. Compare admission, performance, pickup and return as separate inclusions.
