Athens in One Day: Acropolis, Acropolis Museum and Ancient Agora

Watch a practical Acropolis–Museum–Agora visit order, time buffers and which ticket to reserve first. This is a three-ticket version of the day: selected adult starting prices totalled €134.26 on 19 September 2026. The tickets are separate purchases, not a pass or guaranteed checkout total; the one-day guide also compares lower-cost plans.

The loop

One loop covers the day: the hill first, the museum second, lunch in Plaka, then a walk to Syntagma. It is 3.5 kilometres, and every tier follows it.

  1. Reach Acropolis Metro station on Line 2 by 7:40am and walk up to the hill for the 8am opening slot.
  2. Leave the hill by about 10am and walk down to the Acropolis Museum, nine minutes away; its indoor galleries carry the hot hours.
  3. Eat near the Monument of Lysicrates in Plaka, six minutes on, where shaded cafés fill the small square.
  4. Rest through mid-afternoon, then from about 5pm walk on to Hadrian’s Arch, the Zappeion and Syntagma.
  5. Finish at Syntagma, where Metro Lines 2 and 3 meet; Line 3 is the airport line.

Free

The free day never enters the Acropolis. It uses the paths beneath the rock, Plaka’s lanes and three open-air stops, so the hill stays a view, not a visit.

  1. At 8am walk the paths of Dionysiou Areopagitou from Acropolis station and look up at the rock while the morning is cool.
  2. Go on into Plaka by 10am and take lunch by the Monument of Lysicrates.
  3. Rest indoors or in a café through mid-afternoon.
  4. From about 5pm walk to Hadrian’s Arch, the Zappeion and Syntagma: 19 minutes in all.

Good to know

  • Free means no ticket, not no cost: add a 90-minute Metro ticket at €1.20 if you start away from Acropolis station.

With a guide

Skip it here: a guide’s value is the hill itself, and this tier stays outside.

Mid: about €80 for the hill and the museum

Mid buys two entries: the Acropolis at 8am and the museum before lunch. Everything after the museum stays flexible, so the morning is the only fixed part.

  1. Book the earliest Acropolis slot, 8am, and be at the entrance a little early.
  2. Finish on the hill by about 10am, then walk nine minutes down to the museum.
  3. Give the museum until lunch, then eat in Plaka.
  4. Keep the afternoon loose and walk on to Syntagma from about 5pm.

Good to know

  • Entry is by timed slot, and the last admission is 20 minutes before closing.
  • The state site operator can close archaeological sites from midday in high temperatures, so the first slot is the safest.
  • Large luggage and food are not allowed on the site, so leave bags at your hotel.

On your own

Enough for most visitors: a self-guided 8am entry, then the museum.

Worth it if the ruins mean little without context; see the splurge tier.

Acropolis entry tickets

The mid-range day: about €80 in tickets.

Prices checked 19 Sep 2026 · per person, tickets and transport, excluding accommodation

Splurge: about €210 with a guide and a food walk

Splurge swaps the two self-guided entries for one small-group tour of the hill and the museum. An evening food walk then follows, once the heat has passed.

  1. Join the small-group tour outside Acropolis Metro station at its early start; it covers the hill and the museum.
  2. Use the guided morning for both entries, then rest and lunch in Plaka through the hot hours.
  3. Book the food walk’s early-evening slot and confirm its meeting point on the listing.

Good to know

  • The tour is in English for up to 12 guests, and the food walk is a shared group.
  • Check what the food walk includes before you skip a proper meal.
  • The tour and the food walk both refund in full when cancelled at least 24 hours ahead.

The self-guided tier costs far less and suits confident readers of ruins.

The guide is the splurge: one booked morning explains both sites to a small group.

If you are on a layover

Metro Line 3 is the direct link: it runs from the airport to Syntagma, where the loop ends, and Line 2 then reaches Acropolis station. Under about six hours from landing, run the free loop in reverse from Syntagma.

Good to know

  • Fares: the Metro airport ticket is €9 one way or €16 return and also works on the suburban railway; the Airport Express bus is €5.50.
  • A taxi to the centre is a flat €40 from 5am to midnight and €55 overnight; the ring-road drive takes 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Airport Express buses run around the clock, and the X95 stops at Syntagma.
  • To add the hill, book a slot with margin: last admission is 20 minutes before closing, and closing can be as early as 5pm.

Where a guided tour earns its money in one day

The free loop needs no guide. A guide earns the fee on the hill, where four monuments from one building programme are easy to confuse. Compare Athens options below.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Which Acropolis slot should I book?

The first one. The hill opens at 8am in every season, entry is by timed slot, and the operator can close sites from midday in high temperatures.

Can I fit the hill and the museum into one day?

Yes. Go up at 8am and down to the museum by about 10:30am; the museum closes no earlier than 5pm on any day, so the order is safe.

Do I need the Metro for this loop?

No. The six walks add up to 47 minutes, the longest being the 13 from Acropolis station to the hill. The Metro only gets you to the start.

Is the free day worth doing without the hill?

Yes, if you mainly want the atmosphere: the paths, Plaka and Syntagma cost nothing. Add the mid tier only if you want to stand on the hill.

How much of this fits a layover?

Under about six hours from landing, take Line 3 to Syntagma and run the free loop in reverse. Leave the timed hill for a longer stay.
