# Vancouver → Beijing

## Answer first

Two things decide this trip more than the fare: which airline and aircraft your actual nonstop is on, and whether your visit fits China's current 30-day visa-free window for Canadian passport holders. Air Canada and Air China both fly Vancouver to Beijing nonstop today, on different planes, and the visa-free arrangement has a published end date -- check both before you compare prices.

## Planning points

### Air Canada or Air China: which nonstop should you pick?

- Recommendation: Compare the aircraft type and whether the flight is genuinely nonstop on your actual search result rather than assuming either carrier by name, and prioritise the newer or stop-free option if you're travelling with an elderly relative or young children.
- Rationale: Both carriers fly their own nonstop metal on this route -- Air Canada on a newer 787 Dreamliner, Air China on a 777-300ER that no longer makes the technical stop in Shenyang it once did. YVR's own route brochure lists them combining for 7 weekly departures, which is a total across both airlines, not either one's individual frequency.
- Trade-off: Neither carrier's schedule is fixed permanently, so treat the aircraft and stop-free claim as current rather than guaranteed, and re-check the specific flight number before booking.

### Is the 30-day visa-free window enough for your trip?

- Recommendation: Book under the visa-free arrangement if your trip fits inside 30 days; if you already expect to stay longer, start gathering Q-visa documentation before you book rather than after you land.
- Rationale: The current exemption lets Canadian ordinary-passport holders enter for business, tourism or family visits without a visa for up to 30 days, but it doesn't extend past that -- longer family-reunion stays need a separate Q-category visa tied to a documented relationship with someone in China.
- Trade-off: Applying for a Q-visa ahead of time means gathering proof of a relationship to a resident in China and building in processing time, which only makes sense if you already know you'll be staying longer.

### How much buffer does a Richmond departure actually need?

- Recommendation: Departing from Richmond, you can reasonably leave later than a downtown traveller would, but still build in the standard international check-in window rather than cutting it to the transit time alone.
- Rationale: YVR's own transit page states Richmond is about 18 minutes from the airport by Canada Line, noticeably shorter than the under-30-minute figure quoted for downtown Vancouver -- a real difference for anyone timing a departure from Richmond specifically, though the airport doesn't publish a same-day margin on top of that transit time.
- Trade-off: Trusting the shortest published commute time can backfire if you don't also budget for check-in lines and the Canada Line's own transfer time on the day.

## Published route research

### Air Canada vs. Air China: two different nonstop flights

Search "Beijing" from Vancouver and your results split between two airlines. Air Canada's flight uses a 787 Dreamliner, part of the newer wide-body fleet this carrier has been putting on North America-China routes. Air China flies its own nonstop metal on a 777-300ER, and its own announcement confirms it has dropped the technical stop in Shenyang that this flight once made -- it's a genuine nonstop now, not a one-stop with a quick touchdown. YVR's own July 2026 route brochure lists the two carriers combining for about 7 departures a week, which is a combined total across both airlines rather than either one's own frequency. That doesn't mean a flight departs every day; check the specific flight number and day in your own search result before assuming service on a date you haven't confirmed.

### Comparing dates and observed CAD fares

Separate two questions that look like one: which dates you can actually travel, and when this route has historically been cheaper. Aviasales and Travelpayouts fare data is timestamped, historical and observational, not confirmed inventory -- it shows a pattern, not a guaranteed seat. Compare a few outbound and return date combinations, then run a live search with your real passenger count, cabin and baggage needs; the final price and conditions are confirmed by whichever provider takes your payment.

### Your first leg after landing in Beijing

Beijing Capital Airport's own page confirms the Airport Express covers four stops -- T3, T2, Sanyuanqiao and Dongzhimen -- at roughly 10-minute intervals for a flat RMB 25 fare. Sanyuanqiao connects to subway lines 10 and 12, Dongzhimen to lines 2 and 13; the two interchanges lead into different parts of the city, so check which side your first stop is on before you pick a station. On taxis, the airport's own published rate is RMB 13 for the first 3km, then RMB 2.3 per kilometre plus a RMB 1 fuel surcharge, with time-of-day and traffic adding further charges the airport doesn't quote a fixed number for. The airport's page doesn't list a specific rideshare pickup location separate from the taxi stand, so confirm your platform's pickup point directly after you land rather than assuming it matches the taxi queue.

### Passport, the visa-free window, and family-visit visas

The Chinese Embassy in Canada's own notice states that, from 00:00 on February 17, 2026 through 24:00 Beijing time on December 31, 2026, Canadian ordinary-passport holders can enter mainland China visa-free for business, tourism, family visits, exchange visits or transit, for stays of up to 30 days. The exemption excludes work, study and news-reporting purposes, and diplomatic or official passport holders still need a visa arranged in advance. For families planning to stay longer than 30 days, the visa-free window doesn't extend automatically -- you'd instead apply for a Q-category family-visit visa: Q1 for family reunions expected to run past 180 days, Q2 for shorter visits up to 180 days. Both require the applicant to be a relative of a Chinese citizen or of a foreign national with permanent residence in China; Chinese heritage or a previously-held Chinese passport doesn't by itself qualify you. Check the embassy's current notice again both before you book and again shortly before you fly -- this policy has a stated end date, not an indefinite one.

### Mubboo's take

Confirm which airline and aircraft your actual flight number is on before you compare fares; work backward from Richmond's shorter Canada Line time or downtown's longer one to a realistic departure; and build the 30-day visa-free window, plus the Q-visa fallback if you need it, into your planning rather than checking it after you've booked. Those three checks matter more to how this trip actually goes than the difference in fare on the page. The visa-free arrangement has a published end date -- don't treat it as a permanent policy.

### Travel scenarios

#### A Vancouver traveller visiting family in Beijing

- Question: How often can you realistically visit, and is 30 days enough?
- Recommendation: Plan trips under 30 days around the visa-free arrangement directly; if you want to stay longer on any given visit, start the Q-visa paperwork weeks before you book rather than after.
- Why: The visa-free arrangement covers family visits directly for up to 30 days at a time. Beyond that, the exemption doesn't extend, and a Q-category family-visit visa requires proof of a relationship with someone resident in China, which takes time to assemble.
- Trade-off: Keeping each trip under 30 days avoids visa paperwork, but shortens each visit; families who want longer stays need to plan the Q-visa well in advance.

#### An older relative flying alone to reconnect with family in Vancouver or Beijing

- Question: Which nonstop is the safer choice for someone travelling alone?
- Recommendation: Book the nonstop, newer-aircraft option where the price difference is manageable, and write out the Beijing Airport Express or taxi pickup steps in advance for whoever is meeting them at arrival.
- Why: Both carriers fly genuinely nonstop service, but the aircraft differ -- one newer wide-body, one with a technical stop only recently removed. For someone travelling without help, a confirmed nonstop with a newer aircraft reduces the number of things that can go differently than expected.
- Trade-off: The newer aircraft or the flight with no history of a technical stop may cost more, but reduces the number of unfamiliar steps a solo older traveller has to manage.

#### A Vancouver-based student flying home to Beijing for a break

- Question: How should you time booking around a fixed return date?
- Recommendation: Lock in the return date around term dates first, then compare observed fares across a narrow window of outbound dates rather than waiting indefinitely for a lower number.
- Why: With the two carriers combining for about 7 weekly departures, date flexibility is real but not unlimited, and a student's return date is usually fixed by term dates rather than by price.
- Trade-off: Waiting for a lower observed fare risks losing a seat on the specific carrier or day that fits a school schedule, since combined frequency on this route is limited.

#### A Vancouver business traveller with a fixed Beijing meeting time

- Question: How do you avoid being late after landing?
- Recommendation: For a hard meeting deadline, choose the taxi and build in traffic buffer; for a flexible arrival, the Airport Express plus subway transfer is the cheaper, still-reliable option.
- Why: The Airport Express is fast and cheap but still requires a subway transfer at Sanyuanqiao or Dongzhimen; a taxi is direct but its cost and time depend on traffic the airport doesn't quote a fixed figure for.
- Trade-off: A more cautious arrival transfer plan may mean paying for a taxi instead of the cheaper Airport Express, trading cost for a tighter time guarantee.

#### A family planning to stay in China longer than a month

- Question: What has to happen before you book if you're staying past 30 days?
- Recommendation: If you already know the trip will run past 30 days, start assembling Q-visa documentation at the same time you book flights, not after you've committed to travel dates.
- Why: The visa-free exemption caps out at 30 days with no automatic extension. A Q-category visa requires documented proof of a relationship with a Chinese citizen or permanent resident, and that documentation takes time to gather.
- Trade-off: Starting Q-visa paperwork alongside booking adds upfront work, but avoids assuming the visa-free window will simply extend once you're already there.

### Getting to YVR for this flight from around Metro Vancouver

#### Richmond

- Canada Line reaches YVR in about 18 minutes, the shortest of the three areas here.
- The shorter distance still needs a same-day traffic and check-in buffer built in.
- You can leave later than a downtown traveller, but don't cut the buffer to the transit time alone.

Source: Vancouver Airport Authority — https://www.yvr.ca/en/passengers/transportation/public-transportation

#### Downtown Vancouver

- Canada Line runs under 30 minutes to the airport with frequent departures.
- Taxi and rideshare pickup is at designated zones on International Arrivals; confirm the exact zone before you leave.
- Budget the $5 departure Add Fare and the standard international check-in window.

Source: Vancouver Airport Authority — https://www.yvr.ca/en/passengers/transportation/public-transportation; Vancouver Airport Authority — https://www.yvr.ca/en/passengers/transportation/rideshare

#### Burnaby and Coquitlam

- Reaching the Canada Line trunk from here requires an added transfer that isn't separately timed by the airport.
- The airport doesn't publish a commute time for these areas, so add extra based on actual road conditions.
- Don't assume Richmond's or downtown's transit time applies here.

Source: Vancouver Airport Authority — https://www.yvr.ca/en/passengers/transportation/public-transportation

#### Beijing Capital Airport arrival

- Airport Express runs four stops roughly every 10 minutes, connecting to subway lines at Sanyuanqiao and Dongzhimen.
- Taxi starts at RMB 13 for the first 3km, then RMB 2.3 per kilometre plus a fuel surcharge.
- Decide between the Airport Express and a taxi based on your first stop and how tight your schedule is.
