Antalya travel guide

Antalya

Antalya deserves separate time for Kaleiçi’s streets, one chosen shore and one archaeological trip; the region is wider than the city.

Plan Antalya by time and budget

Colourful buildings and a pedestrian street in Antalya Kaleiçi

Kaleiçi lanes

The walled old town combines houses from several periods with narrow streets above the former port.

Best for: Visitors who want Antalya’s layered urban history · Area: Old town

Plan for The lane network is irregular; a harbour stop and a full old-town walk are different uses of time.

Three stone arches of Hadrian’s Gate in Antalya

Hadrian’s Gate

The surviving Roman gate marks an entrance into Kaleiçi.

Best for: Visitors comparing Antalya’s Roman and later town fabric · Area: Kaleiçi edge

Plan for It is an exterior stop, not an archaeological site requiring half a day.

Fluted Yivli Minaret rising above Antalya rooftops

Yivli Minaret precinct

The fluted minaret and nearby Seljuk monuments sit inside the historic town.

Best for: Visitors interested in Seljuk layers after the Roman gate · Area: Kaleiçi

Plan for A quick photograph misses the relationship between the minaret and its precinct.

Boats and buildings around Antalya old harbour

Old harbour outlook

Kaleiçi slopes down to a former port now used as a marina.

Best for: Visitors who want a sea-facing finish to an old-town walk · Area: Below Kaleiçi

Plan for A boat outing is a separate purchase; the harbour view itself stands alone.

Konyaaltı shore with the Beydağları mountains beyond

Konyaaltı shore

The western Antalya shore gives a beach day a mountain backdrop.

Best for: Travellers who want a city-connected coast day · Area: West Antalya

Plan for It is a separate trip from the old town; its public shore and paid facilities are different choices.

Lower Düden Waterfall dropping from Antalya cliffs into the sea

Lower Düden waterfall

The lower Düden drops from coastal cliffs into the Mediterranean near Lara.

Best for: Visitors choosing a short nature stop east of the centre · Area: Lara coast

Plan for It is different from Upper Düden inland; a product saying only “Düden” needs clarification.

Ancient columned street at Perge near Antalya

Perge ancient city

Perge preserves a Hellenistic gate, Roman streets and an extensive excavated urban plan in Aksu.

Best for: Visitors who want a close archaeological outing · Area: Aksu

Plan for The ancient theatre is temporarily closed for restoration; do not buy a tour assuming theatre entry.

Stone seating and stage of the Aspendos Roman theatre

Aspendos theatre

Aspendos is known for its preserved Roman theatre and historic aqueducts near Serik.

Best for: Visitors choosing one large Roman performance space · Area: Serik

Plan for A short theatre stop can miss the aqueducts; some guided circuits add several distant sites.

Termessos theatre ruins in the Taurus Mountains

Termessos mountain ruins

Termessos occupies a steep site in Güllük Mountain National Park.

Best for: Active walkers who want archaeology in a mountain setting · Area: Güllük Mountain

Plan for The steep terrain is a different commitment from Perge’s comparatively accessible urban ruins.

Build an Antalya stay with a clear base

One day: old town and harbour

Walk from Hadrian’s Gate through Kaleiçi to the old harbour.

Add the Yivli Minaret precinct rather than rushing to a second coast.

The trade-off A beach transfer would reduce time in the old town.

Three days: town, shore, ruins

Give one day to the historic centre, one to Konyaaltı or Lara with Lower Düden, and one to Perge or Aspendos.

Choose Perge for an urban archaeological plan or Aspendos for its theatre and aqueducts.

The trade-off A same-day Perge-Aspendos-Side circuit is a full regional outing, not a relaxed city afternoon.

Four days: add depth, not distance

Use the extra day for Termessos if steep terrain appeals, or keep it for the beach base.

The mountain ruins demand a different pace from a coast day.

The trade-off A long Riviera drive can absorb the whole extra day.

Choose where you will return each evening

Kaleiçi for city history

Stay in or near the old town when landmark walks and harbour evenings are the point.

Check the actual hotel entrance and luggage access on narrow lanes.

The trade-off The beach then becomes a deliberate outing.

Konyaaltı for repeated shore time

Choose the western shore for beach sessions within an Antalya city stay.

Plan a separate trip to Kaleiçi rather than assuming an easy walk.

The trade-off A beach-first base changes the timing of early old-town visits.

Lara for the eastern coast

Choose a Lara address when sandy shore time and Lower Düden matter most.

Read the hotel location carefully; the coast and resort belt stretch eastward.

The trade-off Historic sights can become a longer transfer from the far eastern edge.

Use AYT for an Antalya city stay

Antalya Airport (AYT) has AntRay and municipal bus links to the city centre and intercity bus terminal. Match the last local leg to a Kaleiçi, Konyaaltı or Lara hotel address.

Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport (GZP) is roughly 180 kilometres from Antalya and serves the Alanya side of the coast. Treat it as a different arrival market, not a second Antalya city airport.

Order the dish that belongs to Antalya

Antalya-style piyaz is a bean dish with tahini-rich tarator, quite different from a light bean salad. Pair it with şiş köfte if you want a local meal rather than another generic resort buffet.

Bitter-orange preserves show another side of local cooking. In Kaleiçi, choose a restaurant stop to suit the old-town walk; the waterfront view and the regional dish need not come from the same table.

City profile

  • Population (Antalya province, all districts, 31 December 2025, 2025): 2,777,677

Attaleia was founded under Attalos II of Pergamon.

Hadrian’s visit in 130 CE is remembered in a surviving Kaleiçi gate.

Famous for:

  • Kaleiçi streets and its old harbour.
  • Contrasting western Konyaaltı and eastern Lara shores.
  • Perge, Aspendos and Termessos excursions outside the city.

A city stay with three different landscapes

Inside Kaleiçi, Roman, Seljuk and later Ottoman traces sit within one walkable district. The old harbour gives that urban route a clear ending at the water.

Beyond the centre, decide between a western beach, the eastern cliff and sand coast, or a full day among ancient ruins. Those choices produce different Antalya holidays; the hotel base should reflect the one you will repeat.

Planning your Antalya visit: FAQs

How many full days should I give Antalya?

Three allows a historic-centre day, a coast-and-waterfall day and one ancient-site outing. Add a fourth for Termessos or slower beach time.

Should I stay in Kaleiçi, Konyaaltı or Lara?

Kaleiçi fits landmark walks; Konyaaltı fits a western shore stay; Lara fits the eastern beach and Lower Düden. Choose by your repeat journey.

Is Perge’s theatre open?

Perge’s theatre is currently closed for restoration. Its other archaeological areas remain the reason to visit; recheck access before booking.

Can I visit Antalya Museum now?

Antalya Museum is currently closed. Plan Kaleiçi or another open venue instead of assuming museum admission is available.

Which airport serves an Antalya city stay?

AYT has tram and bus links into Antalya. GZP is near Alanya and about 180 kilometres from Antalya city.

Is Termessos the same kind of day as Perge?

No. Termessos combines mountain terrain and ruins, while Perge is an excavated ancient city in Aksu. Pick by walking appetite and transport.
